Poured into a standard pint glass a deep rich bronze with a creamy-like one finger off white head atop that left almost two full rings of lace as it settled into a frothy mass, great rich color and a great head.Aromas of brown sugar and earthy, piney hops, the hops are there but i would have liked a little more assertivness. The hops are more pronounced on the palate with a real earthy element to them along with pine and herbal notes, good hop complexity to go with brown sugar and molasses-like sweetness.A pretty solid hopped up red,it's close to being great,as is it's solid.

A: A deep copper colored beer good clarity. The head is tan with cream, compact bubble mixed with a few larger soapy bubbles. Good head retention and some lacing on the glass.

S: Medium-strong hops with a good amount of lemon and lime citrus along with some pine aroma. There is a medium amount of caramel backing that up with a low floral alcohol aroma.

T: A moderately-strong hops bitterness and slightly less caramel malt sweetness with a lot of citrus hops flavor. The hops also bring some pine and an herbal note, making me think it was dry hopped even though I don't catch tat in the nose. The balance is pretty bitter. Some light alcohol sweetness. The finish is medium with a linger after taste of hop bitterness, citrus mixed with some caramel.

M: A creamy medium bodied beer with a medium-strong level of carbonation. A moderate alcohol warmth.

O: A big malt foundation upon which an even bigger hop presence is built. A rich hoppy beer with

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Imperial Pint

Appearance: Dark, stained red with good sized tan head.

Smell: Caramel, toffee, some light pine and spice.

Taste: Very malty and somewhat sweet backbone of caramel, toffee and fruit. Some grapefruit, with a very bitter, spicy and piney finish.

Feel: Somewhat full body with moderately low carbonation and a sharply dry finish. Slightly boozy.

Overall: This is a big Red Ale that skirts dangerously close to both DIPA and Barleywine territory. This is right up Sierra's Nevada's alley. In other words, damn good.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a Surly Darkness chalice. Date on the "Beer Camp" box is 07/29/13.

Appearance: Pours a deep and fairly hazy copper amber orange with some ruby. Moderate amount of bubbles and about two fingers of off white head which slowly recede to a thin creamy layer. Leaves a decent amount of lacing.

Smell: An aggressive and balanced aroma of big hop esters and toasty bready malt. Hoppy upfront with big earthy, floral, and herbal hop hints. Hints of grass and pine resin. Citrus fruit hints of orange rind, grapefruit, tangerine, and lemon zest. Toasty bready malts with hints of caramel, toffee, biscuit, toast, yeast, and some slight roasty chocolate. Slight rye like spice hints as well. A solid well balanced aroma.

Taste: Like the aroma, a sharp and toasty balance of earthy hops and sweet caramel malt. Big hop presence upfront with earthy notes of grass as well as floral notes. Herbal notes of spicy pine resin. Citrus fruit notes of orange, grapefruit, pineapple, tangerine, and zesty lemon. Solid sweet bready malt balance with notes of caramel, toffee, biscuit, yeast, toast, and a little roast presence as well as some spice. Nice combination of bitterness and sweetness. Very good balanced taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Juicy and fairly oily and bitter. Finishes dry. Alcohol presence is tame.

Overall: A very solid Red ale. Ripe and bitter hops with a solid balance of toasty and sweet malts. Bold and balanced.

A 12oz bottle with a bottled-on date of July 2013. The label says Imperial Red Ale - Beer Camp #95; not sure why this has been listed on BA as 'Blood Shot'. Picked up a while back from Trembling Madness in York. Described as an imperial red ale stuffed with West Coast hops.

Poured into a Duvel tulip. Bottle conditioned. A deep, hazy reddish-brown hue with tons of floating sediment and medium carbonation. Yields a large head of creamy off-white foam that lasts for a few minutes before settling as a patchy surface layer. Nice lacing. Aroma of resinous hops with hints of pine, weed, orange peel, subtle citrus, sweet caramel malt, mild earthy yeast and stewed hops. A twinge of cardboard in the background. Pretty good.

Tastes of intense aromatic hops with a dry, bitter finish. Notes of pine resin, dank weed, orange peel, mild citrus, caramel malt, faint earthy yeast and stewed hops. Well-attenuated, followed by a powerful hop-driven bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth, dry and tingly, with pleasant carbonation and good body. Hop oils strip the palate. Very astringent, accompanied by an aftertaste of bitter aromatic hops, pine resin and caramel malt.

Extreme hops, resulting in serious bitterness. Looks alright (if a bit full of sediment), while the aroma and flavour are dominated by powerful pine-laden hop notes underpinned by a caramel malt backbone. Nice body that tantalises the tongue. Good stuff - my impression is that some of the aromatic subtlety has faded but a solid brew nonetheless. I believe this was a one-off but worth sampling if you encounter it.

Caramel and reddish amber colored with a half inch high head of beige tightly-bubbled foam that lingers long. Aroma of grapefruit and orange rind pith, notes of brown sugar and honey.

Rich flavor of ruby grapefruit hops, orange rind, and some pine. Good balance of doughey malt with the hops, but the citrusy goodness really shines here. Some ripe pear and honey, plus faint notes of alcohol sweetness.

Even mouthfeel, full but a bit slick. Slight alcohol warmth, but it does not detract. Overall a great beer.

Poured into tulip; deep, murky brownish red. Looks like a barleywine more than an imperial red. Head is relatively thick, yellow, and fades after a minute or so into a half-centimeter cap of foam.
Smells of complex malt; nutty, sweet, bready...and some herbal, citrusey hops on top.
Taste is huge malt; silky smooth, bready and nutty, semi-sweet flavors abound. Puff of alcohol heat carries some flat hop bitterness with hints of tropical fruit and citrus.
Mouthfeel is pretty full-bodied for the style, smooth and perfectly fizzy at the end. Finish is bitter, bit sticky.
Overall, after this one and the IPA I had last night, I'm wondering how old these bottles are. Each bottle talks about "citrusey hops" but I get nothing but flat bitterness. They're from 2013, but no date. Without the hoppy flavors, this is basically a barleywine. As that, it's not bad though.

Beautiful deep blood orange hued with a light tan head, forms fine speckled lacing around the sides of my chalice. Aroma citric notes all day very big hoppy experience from the first sniff onward. Big malt hints of dark chocolate, roasted malt, caramelized sugars bringing in the flavor of bitter rustic, dank hops. A very big hoppy beer, imperial red ale is more accurate than the Blood Shot name originally dubbed at the Beer Camp. Residual sugars really come out in the finish, instead of the typical dryness I get from most imperial or hoppy beers, I'm getting residual sugar sweetness that lies on the sides of the backend of my tongue and really encompasses the back of the throat with each swallow. Carbonation is natural body is heavy but not weighing me down from enjoying each sip. Overall a nice imperial red ale, that may want to study Lagunitas techniques, they seem to be one of the innovators of this style...more dubbed names Mondo Red, Imperial Red, Investigation Shutdown Ale and the likes have all done this style really well and have laid down a standard for me.

12oz bottle poured into a snifter. 2013 Beer Camp. Bottled July 8th 2013.

A: Pours a dark ruby brown with a slightly yellowed dense head. Has clarity to it but is almost too dark to see through. Leaves spots of lacing on the glass.

S: The aroma explodes with hops. Big malt backbone adds sweetness and roastiness to the beer but doesnt overpower the hop. Fermented fruits

T: Bold beer that is assertive in its flavor. Strong malts clash with powerful hops. The hops come through as a citrusy and earthy blend. Aftertaste lingers with the bitterness of hops. Malts have a nice roasty flavor and a bit of carmel sweetness.

M: Medium body with fairly low carbonation. Bit of a resinous mouthfeel to it.

Overall might be the best one out of this new Beer Camp. Certainly a powerful beer with loads of flavor. Not for the faint of heart or those who dont like hoppy and bitter beers.
