Nice aroma of citrus with a little funk. Tart citrus flavor up front, some spicy pepper tones on the back end, very nice. Fairly thin and very creamy, as it was from the cask, but not bad for the style, good carbonation. Overall, was a very nice beer, I've had this from the bottle before, much better on cask at the brewery.

Review taken on its arrival spring 2014.

12.7oz brown bottle in sturdy and thick Ovila abbey style. Another fantastic collaboration label with a hooded monk. Poured into a stemmed tulip glass.

A - orangish-amber with hints of brilliant golden. Head pours quite nice with a creamy texture of lace.

S - Ovila style yeast and peppercorn spices. Crisp floral notes, juicy fruits of mandarin and nearly ripe pear. A bready malt balances very well.

T - sweet but fruity mandarin notes pop up front with a slight hint of pear and breaded malt. Yeast is exceptional while flowing over the peppercorn and belgian spice notes. Some alcohol notes and an earthy undertone as it warms

M - exactly as a good farmhouse ale should be. Medium bodied and drinkable while the belgian style and spices keep you sipping. Finish is flavorful and has a slightly warm linger.

O - I love finding these bottles of Ovila Abbey ales. We get a batch every so often and they are just a great take on traditional belgian styles. Sierra Nevada have so many offerings these days and they still get me excited over new releases.

12.7oz corked & caged bottle. poured into a tulip. No bottle date but I believe it's from early 2014

A- pours a deep amber-orange color with a small creamy & fizzy white head that reduces to a thin film on top, no lacing left behind

S- plastic phenolic notes mix with a spicy yeast and peppercorn, juicy mandarine orange sweetness with notes of pear skin, bready malt and floral notes close it out

T- initially sweet up front with big juicy mandarine notes quickly following, spicy peppercorn and Belgian yeast kicks in mid-palate, adding some must and earthy flavors, sweet finish with some alcohol and more mandarin on the linger

M- medium-full body with moderate carbonation leads to a slightly foamy mouthfeel that continues into a warming finish

O- well rounded and very drinkable, the peppercorn and mandarine both play an important roll

Bottled on April 01, 2014; Sampled & reviewed on February 13, 2015. Poured from a 12.7 oz. bottle into a pilsner (it's all I had available).

Pours an orange-gold, slightly translucent. About a finger width head that lasts quite a while. Smell of orange, tangarine, grapefruit, with a slight spice hint just as you pull away. The taste of oranges and pepper is prominent but not at all overpowering. Aftertaste is a bit tart but not at all bitter. More sweet, really. Very smooth drinking from start to finish. I have a few more that I may age a little more and re-review later on to see how this one does in the long run.
