Some friends picked this up from the Brewery store for me. Thick, pitch black pour with a one finger caramel-colored head with decent retention and nice lacing. The nose is earthy and really boozey with of hints of toffee, espresso, vanilla, leather, oak, cocoa, and maybe some maple hiding under the bourbon. While the taste follows the nose by being booze forward, the flavors aren't so overpowered and lost. Big toffee, oak, and caramel notes along with hints of vanilla, molasses, tobacco, dark fruit, black cherry, espresso, licorice, and dark chocolate. The maple really emerges as this thing warms and definitely loses the battle to the bourbon, but is still way more prevalent than many of the maple beers I've experienced. The mouthfeel is thick and syrupy but surprisingly drinkable for a 13.4 ABV beer. Overall, this is a bold and boozey beer, but it's very complex and hugely flavorful. I'm really thinking the two I have in the cellar will only improve with age. Yet another example of why Sierra Nevada is one of my favorite breweries.

Thanks to rudzud for sharing this beast.

Very small fizzy head, no real head, dark almost black color, long legs.

Nose lots of dark malt, choc malt, char, mild fudgey, some maple sweetness, maple candies, caramel, some bourbon, light vanilla barrel, dark chocolate chips, coffee liquor, pretty light.

Taste is semi sweet and a bit boozy, lots of chocolate, dark choc chips, little fudgey cocoa and char, with some fusel alcohol heat. Mild vanilla barrel, with light bourbon, and very light maple candy, chicory root flavor and bitter acrid char thing. Bitterness kicks in late, finishes sticky mild sweet with long maple candy and chocolate syrup lingering.

Mouth is med to heavier bod, decent carb, warning tingly fusel booze.

Shared with JLindros.

A - Poured into a Kate the Great tulip a oily black hue with a thin halo that has nice legs.

S - Aromas of super light maple, faint coffee, light roast, nice chocolate. Really muted.

T - Taste is chicory root, alcohol, light roast and bourbon, the finish is lots of maple candy. There is a fair amount of alcohol, the beer is lots of alcohol with a disappointing amount of maple and chocolate. The coffee is almost non-existent. Argh.

M - Mouthfeel is lightly carbonated, alcohol hidden though hot at the same time. No real stout chew. Really disappointing.

O - Overall this beer was an epic letdown. The coffee and maple are both super faint, which is a huge letdown. Super boozy, ugh.

Picked this one up at the Mills River location. I recently checked to see but they were all gone. I wish I had picked up more!

Appearance: Black as night head is caramel and foamy with an aggressive pour but then settles to a faint ring around the edge.

Aroma: When you first pull the cork the 13% abv hits you right on the nose. It opens up after a few minutes and you begin detecting the aromas you expect from a beer with such a name. Its still has a lot of alcohol heat to the nose, but caramel, dark chocolate and some vanilla are also present. Absent are bourbon aromas (perhaps the vanilla?) and maple and coffee.

Taste: Still pretty boozy, however after it opens up and warms up you begin to detect the flavors that seem to be missing from the nose. This is still a very boozy drink but if you take your time with it you begin to detect the maple, vanilla, and caramel from the barrel. Oddly enough the coffee that is supposed to be there is just not detectable in neither the nose or the taste. It does leave a lingering maple taste on the back palate which is nice and it really finishes fairly dry not cloying at all. I guess the one downfall is it is kind of thin for the mouthfeel. I felt like it should have had more viscosity considering the internal workings.

Overall: Its a very well made beer, I enjoyed it, I did think it was lacking in the coffee and texture department otherwise its well balanced and certainly enjoyable. But enjoy with caution. Its a big boozy bottle!
