A: Poured from the bottle into a Sam Smith's imperial pint glass. Body is clear but dark reddish- amber. A 1-finger light-beige head settles on top, leaving behind some nice lacing when it recedes.
S: I like the nose on this one. As soon as I pop the cap I get pine. On the pour it's dank cannabis. After the pour, when I stick my face in the glass, I get more citrus, mainly grapefruit and citrus peel. For a red I'm expecting some caramel malt-type of foundation, but all I'm getting is hops. Not that this hophead is complaining about that, mind you, but it was a modest surprise. Hint of garlic/onion as well (presumably from the Simcoe hops).
T: OK, they claim this is 60 IBUs, but I think it drinks even more bitter than that. Thinnish mouthfeel detracts from the overall presentation, but on just the taste alone, I'm getting a lot of grapefruit - white grapefruit, grapefruit pith and peel all come to mind. Piney towards the back end of the sip, then a puckering lemony/grapefruity bitterness lingers on the aftertaste. Again, I was expecting more caramel malt and a bigger malt foundation; what I get is more of lightly toasted bread - even rye bread comes to mind at times - than the sweeter malt profiles (e.g. caramel, toffee).
M: No one will confuse this with an Imperial Red; it is a bit thin in the feel, which at times helps the hop bitterness seem somewhat metallic. Carbonation is active but not sharp.
O: Solid. I was somewhat reluctant to shell out $18 (after tax & deposit) on an unknown 12-pack, but knowing Sierra Nevada, I figured the risk/reward assessment was fairly balanced, and sure enough, I'm pleased with this beer. It's no Nugget Nectar, but a nice Fall IPA. I predict the 11 beers left from the 12-pack won't last long in my fridge. . . .
