Poured from a bottle into a nonic pint.
A - A clear reddish-dark copper with a two-finger eggshell colored head. Decent head retention, and a healthy amount of clumpy lacing.
S - Medium strength aroma of minty/piney hop and caramel malt.
T - Hop forward, but kind of a strange hop blend here with some earthy and pine elements and alpha acids, but without much citrus sweetness or tropical notes promised on the label. Almost a little onion/vegetal. Weak malt bill isn't really sweet enough to compete with the acidity of the hops, instead coming through with kind of a wafer/Saltine cracker like taste. Astringent/mineral almost salty finish. Not very balanced or nuanced.
M - Light to medium bodied, medium carbonation. Could use a thicker and creamier body IMO.
O - I usually enjoy SN products, but I think this one is a little off the mark in almost every area. Whats odd is that they have created much better red IPA's as part of their "Beer Camp" series. Wonder why this one got the nod? Not a repeat buy.

This American Amber or Red Ale, is a interesting combination of beers styles that i approve of, though i am not a beer chemist, it sparked me to call a friend of mine who is, to have them explain this flavor to me. It is defiantly better then i thought it would be, although I had no idea what to expect from a 'red ipa' i was impressed with Sierra Nevada's Flipside. Its smokey dark appearance was a interesting factor, but its smell, was the sort of beer I wish they would bottle and smell as an AXE body spray. The mouth feel and taste where both outstanding in my opinion and I did really like this beer.
