Appearance - Pours a relatively clear, brilliant auburn brown with a beige 2 finger head. Good retention, resulting in a firm base of suds on the surface. Leaves a strong amount of lace around the glass with good stick.
Smell - Classic SN hops are prevalent; lots of pine and citrus. Toasted biscuit and light traces of caramel. I detect no tropical fruit notes as described on the bottle.
Taste - As expected; lots of whole cone hop flavor; piney, with supporting notes of citrus and spice. Bits of earth. Solid malt backbone, displaying toasted biscuit with faint notes of caramel. Finishes with moderate orange pith and the faintest trace of mint. As in the nose, no firm tropical character can be found as described on the bottle.
Mouthfeel - Medium in body with fair to lively carbonation. Smooth
Overall - If you know Sierra Nevada well, I think you'll have a pretty good idea of what this will taste like before you even take a sip. This is classic SN, not straying far from the hop profile that has brought them all their amazing success. As a result, it's not so unique from their core line-up, unfortunately. I've heard rumor this is replacing the Tumbler Brown as their fall seasonal; if so, disappointing. Tumbler was at least a change of pace from their mainstays. I see this as no more than their Torpedo with a bit of roasted malt as a change-up. It's good, yes, but all too similar. Following this up with their Celebration just means more of the same.
