i was surprised that this beer didn't score higher. i was blown away.

appearance; beautiful brown/ tan with some gold and nice evident carbonation, thick, sticky head that lasted for a long time, maintaining a good amount until the very end.

smell; though very pleasant, this is the least impressive aspect of this beer. the smell is malty with a little bit of hops and fall spice as well.

taste; outstanding. first is sweet malt, quickly followed by fruit and a well blended spice mix, with the bitter touch coming at the very end, acting as hormoniously with the beer's sweetness, fruit and spice. one of the most complex, balanced tastes I've had.

mouthfeel; not exactly creamy, but still chewy, as somebody else mentioned. bubbles are nice and blend extremely well with the heavy yet lightness of the beer. amazing texture.

overall; this is one of the best beers I've tried in months and i'd say the best seasonal beer I've had. bought one in a mixed packs and plan on buying a couple of six packs of just this. really, really balanced, easy to drink, and delicious. get it!!!

Holy Crap! They've done it again! Sierra Nevada has produced a beer that will give their own Ruthless Rye a run for it's money.

The Citra and Centennial really stand out in this beer. After the initial IPA bitterness across the tongue, you are left with a clean, semi-sweet aftertaste. Too bad this is a seasonal. Like Ruthless Rye, I would buy it year round if available.

Bottoms up!

I love this beer. It has a great red hue, a very fragrant smell (nice and hoppy), and is quite good. I am a big fan of IPAs in general and like a good bitter beer. The one thing I don't always like about some IPAs is that after I finish it I feel like I could use a glass of water. This one has the great flavor, smell, and a terrific finish.

This beer picks up where the old Goose Island Harvest left off and really delivers on the potential. Flipside adds fuller flavor, more balance and a nice pine / citrus flavor. Hoppy, but not over hopped. Nice reddish caramel color.
Overall an excellent beer.

This brew pours a reddish brown color with a two finger head, some of which lasts until the end. Heavy lacing is present along with good carbonation.

The smell is dominated by floral and citrus hops; orange, lemon, grapefruit and pine are all present. There is also a rye bread smell along with sweet malts.

The taste starts with a thick bready malt taste then moves to a slightly syrup like fruit taste then finishes with a complex citrus and floral hop taste.

The feel is thick and chewy but at the same time manages to be a little thin and syrup like in the middle.

Overall this is another winner from Sierra Nevada. The label art and name seem to suggest that this brew is a sequel to their "Ruthless Rye". Well Sierra Nevada has succeeded in creating a quality end of summer IPA.

This is my first try of SN's seasonal red IPA. (2013)

Appearance: It's a beautiful dark amber color with a nice frothy thick beige head.

Smell: This is well above average. Flipside smells of high quality IPA. Hops (derp!).

Taste: Awesome! Maybe it's because this is my first quality brew in a while, but damn... good beer. It has a hoppy resinous character typical of SN's (and high quality brews of this genre in general) IPA crowd. It has a punch, and is the anti-Natty.

Mouthfeel: Great with a nice viscosity. Nothing wrong here.

Overall: No remorse here... Flipside is a great beer. This is no surprise, considering where it came from. I'd drink this any day.

Poured into a DFH IPA glass. Deep ruby color with a two finger off-white head. Gorgeous and perfect for an early fall beverage.

Fresh hop smell bursts into the sinuses; very floral. Smells delicious.

Sweet malt body holds up a wonderful composition of hop flavors. Really nice citrus, pineapple, and a bit of resin notes. A touch of spice (rye?) lingers on the palate. Mild astringency. Clean finish. A touch more than medium-bodied. The balance to this is ridiculous and lends for very easy drinking.

I'm having mine with a blue cheese laced salad, followed by veggie pizza on homemade crust. I don't think I'll have much to complain about tonight.

Less than $9 for a six pack makes this a steal. Once again, Sierra Nevada puts out a very solid beer that has wide distribution. Magical. Highly recommended.

Flipside Red is a rich brown with a bit of red. Pours a moderate sized creamy head with okay retention and moderate lacing. Smells of citrusy hops, caramel malt, and resiny, dank hops.

Taste is an assault of bitter, dank hops. Starts with dank hops, then bready and caramel malt, then grapefruit, lemon peel, and tangerine. Has a dank, citric, bready aftertaste. Body is average with high carbonation, a bit of creaminess.

12 oz bottle poured into a 10oz flute

A - Beautiful deep red color, amber hues, a little bit of sediment or thickness

S - Relatively pungent ipa smell, strong malt smell

T - Initial feel of both refreshing but complexity

m - the different hops combine for a lingering taste

o - A solid beer I will be drinking this all season. Sierra Nevada rarely disappoints!

Bought a 24 pack at Costco,

Appearance-A nice reddish hue almost on the verge of being brown. 1/2" head fluffy

Smell-Great citrus hop notes followed with a little malt and grain hidden in the background.

Taste-Great complexity as this resembles a Amber and an IPA mixed together but in a good way. There is the first bite of bitter hop and then on to the smooth Amber flavor. It finished with a clean finish and back to the IPA on the verge of a little to much carbonation.

Overall great beer gets a really good complex flavor of Amber and Ipa in my opinion and should be tried by lovers of both.

A: Dark brown and red body with a fairly thick white head that leaves good lacing rings.

S: Huge huge bold hop aroma! It smells like an opened hop bag! Extremely stoked about the smell of this beer. I don't even want to drink it, just sit here and smell it. There's a strong resinous scent. It's wonderful.

T: Strong citrus flavor, like grapefruit rind without a ton of bitterness. Bitterness is actually fairly low. A bit of cedar in the background. Not much in the malt side of the house, but excellent none-the-less.

M: The mouthfeel is great. It has just enough bitterness to keep you from chugging the beer, but is light enough to keep it from feeling thick or saturated.

O: Do you love hops? You will love this beer. I only wish there was a way to find out when this beer was brewed. I'm drinking it on the East Coast and it was brewed on the West Coast but it tastes so fresh it is crazy. It's very delicious and I highly recommend drinking it.

12oz bottle poured into a Heavy Seas tulip.

Well red IPA is coming into style, but it's not a recognized style, so not going to bother with any BJCP nonsense. Pours a quickly dissipating head but coats the glass very well, so good lacing.

Very nice nose, very tropical and hints of rye. Delightful and unusual to Sierra Nevada I've had in the past. The tropical notes pass incredibly well into the taste; very nicely done as a whole. A great sipper that doesn't taste so much like an IPA as a fantastic specialty pale.

Check it out. Easy to find and cheap, and a good counterpoint to so many "generally bitter" IPAs around. Goes for, and finds, a distinct flavor.

T - huge, bold flavors with sweet burnt caramel, grain, balanced by a heavy dose of piny hops, grapefruit, orange zest, slight hop spiciness
M - oily hops coat the palate with a sticky smack if dry pine that lingers with a tongue prickle, medium body, ample carbonation
O - solid red IPA from a top craft brewer!

S: Orange, papaya, tangerine in the nose.

T: Pine up front, then orange and tangerine. Nice and tropical and nectary.

M: Medium bodied and smooth.

O: This is a deliciously tropical and nectary red IPA, and I think that's the idea behind Red IPAs/Amber ales.

Had this one on-tap at First Street here in town. Came out a clear ruby red with a creamy off-white head. Great retention to this one as it left nice sip rings on the glass. Nice citrusy, danky aroma really invites me in.

Ample carbonation bolsters this beer well making this all-to-drinkable. Bitter citrus-rind hoppiness carries this one. Semi-sweetness on the finish with some lingering bitterness on the palate. This is quite the approachable easy-drinking Red Ale. I'd love to see this one around more. Nice work, SN.

Amazing color to it reminds me of fall leaves and then a strong smell of astringent hops that are reminiscent of citrus and pine and floral smells. It reminds me of their torpedo with a sweet malt smell. On the taste its that same astringent hop that scrubs the tongue with a strong herbal green taste and a lot of pine flavors. The sweetness of the malts comes in the middle of the sip and bridges the hop bitterness real well.

Its an excellent beer and the hops really come through so well. I like this better than their torpedo because of the sweet malt taste which really wraps this beer up nicely. Sierra Nevada was smart to go with this one instead of their last Fall offering.

This beer looks amazing. It has this incredibly vibrant caramel-ruby hue with a nice lacing. There’s a fantastic aroma to it—I can tell it’s fresh because the hops are just vibrant. I pick up a bit of pine and grapefruit that’s overshadowed by a sticky, dank, resiny note and held together with a caramelly-malty backbone. The aroma profile carries over to the flavor, with a smooth and surprisingly mellow bitterness lending some complexity to the lingering sticky-green-malty taste. It's good stuff. a little malty, kinda catty, slightly dank... it’s solid and scratches that itch, and for the price it’s a steal. One I will definitely seek out again.

Sixers of this guy and Tumbler hangin' next to each other at the packie. Yeah, I'll bass on Tumbler, thanks.

Fantastic pour- slightly darker than amber. Puffy off-white head that remains throughout.

Aroma is muted sweetness with a touch of grassy hops. Mellow.

Flavor is smooth yet potent. Much sharper malt bite than I was expecting- quite roasty with a touch of pecan nuttiness. The Sierra hop profile is here, though. Nicely floral hops that compliment the malt profile nicely.

Smooth and clean mouthfeel for flavors that can be harsh if not handled correctly. This comes together beautifully.

Amazing addition to Sierra's seasonal lineup. This beer looks like a red ale, drinks like a black IPA, and finishes like a pale ale. Sierra's done well with this one.

The Carmel malt, with some spices is a nice touch with a bit of grapefruit, along with small amounts of pine flavor. Pours a dark red brown, Caramel sweetness is what I smell. Some tropical notes in this as well. Very good seasonal by SN.

The hop flavor is in perfect contrast, rising crisp and sharp with dry grass, grapefruit and Carmel.

Bottled 8/16/13.

Appearance: Dark copper/amber hue with decent clarity. Sudsy off-white head about half a finger in size and laces well.

Aroma: Fruity hop notes of sweet grapefruit and herbal watermelon. I was expecting a lot of malt but not really getting any in the nose.

Taste: Definitely some good malts in there. Starts off with a great nutty malt character balanced well by a light grassy hop presence. The flavor blooms after that into a fierce battle of confectionary malts notes of caramel, hazelnut, and toffee versus a hop character comprised of everything from earthy to citrus, to a melon-like sweetness. The toffee and sweeter hop flavors are grounded by the earthy hops and more bitter malts to keep this thing in a great balance while delivering lots of flavor. Almost juicy at times. I'd clock the bitterness in around 50 IBUs. May be calculated as more but the sweet hop flavor and malts make it much less of an assault on the palate than it rightfully should be. Really good amount of flavor for 6.2% ABV. Finish is mostly smooth with a little bite and aftertaste is reverbing earthy bitterness with some toffee goodness.

Mouthfeel: Medium in body with a tad more carbonation than is necessary. Great drinkability and sessionable if you're daring.

Final Thoughts: At about a month and a half old Flipside Red IPA is tasting great and I might just invest in a sixer before the seasons over. I can see this style becoming much more popular in the near future. The casual complexity makes for a great drinking experience. Would I drink it again? Yes.

You can always count on Sierra Nevada to produce a quality product and Flipside is no exception. REMEMBER this is a Red IPA not an autumn brown, so there is punch of hops.

I poured this from a bottle into an Ale glass. The color is great with a nice head which makes for great lacing. It appears as a deep red/brown kind of reminds me of changing leaves which makes it really nice for the time of year. There is a nice scent o this beer, you get some floral hops and even, am I nuts, maybe some spiced apple? It smells awesome! The mouth-feel is just perfect and very unique. There is a lot of carbonation but it works well here and I think they were going for something that had a bubbly feel as it keeps this IPA initially light on the palate. The taste...how did they do this? Starts off with light hops, different for an IPA, then YES I got some spiced apple and even some cinnamon finishing with more hops but not of citrus, more like light pine which works so well with the other flavors. This is one of the strangest IPAs I have ever had and its great! Would even be great for later in the season and I believe anyone who enjoys quality crafted IPAs will be very very surprised at this one. Entirely unique!

Poured somewhat vigorously into a pint glass. Fantastic reddish/coppery hue with a solid finger of head. Hop aroma abounds from the glass which is expected (we ARE talking about SN here). Closer examination of the smell finds an amazing aroma of citrus that definitely nails the summer portion of this beer that they were going for. The color tips its hat at the transition towards fall lagers nicely. Smooth mouthfeel more representative of an IPA and a generous amount of malt balances the more than generous amount of hops put into this beer.

In short, a great brew that I'm already looking to go grab again and enjoy.

Served in a tulip glass.

A: Spot on for the style. Nice dark amber color. Dense cream colored head. Nice lacing.

T: Lots of pine and citrus. Very juicy. Nice malt backbone as well. Good balance here.

M: Nearly perfect for the style. Nice solid medium body and perfect carbonation.

There is a reason why my blood is red: because this stuff is coursing through my veins. Big fan. BIG BIG fan. Not one to usually care much about the appearance of the beer, but this one is a nice red color and the color indicates a complexity of malt compounds present, which contribute nicely to the important attribute: THE FLAVOR. Oh, the flavor! This beer grew out of the Earth, just like I did, and the taste is there to prove it. There is grain in this bottle, and it feeds and sustains you. There are hops in this bottle. They awaken your face and mind. There is yeast in this bottle. And now it's inside you, alive and teeming. You are no longer a purely human/Neanderthal mixture. Now you are part yeast. Its DNA is now in your DNA, in the nucleus of every cell in your body.
