I love this beer. It has a great red hue, a very fragrant smell (nice and hoppy), and is quite good. I am a big fan of IPAs in general and like a good bitter beer. The one thing I don't always like about some IPAs is that after I finish it I feel like I could use a glass of water. This one has the great flavor, smell, and a terrific finish.

Pours a dark red brown with ruby highlights. Nice tan colored head that leaves thick gobs of lacing. Caramel sweetness lingers in the background of the hop dominated scent. The hops smell of citrus fruit including orange and pine.

Taste has a nice bitterness that is maintained throughout. Medium bodied that maintains an even feel with a sharp bitter finish. The taste begins with a caramel sweetness, but quickly moves to a floral and citrus fruitiness that is wonderful, but brief. Finishes with an increasing perception of bitterness and an impression of pine.

Flipside offers a wonderful combination of hops, but lacks some of the malt depth I would prefer to move this to the next level. That said I would enjoy having this beer on hand.

12oz bottle with my Sierra Nevada balloon glass of course!
Notes from 09/07/13

A: Deep auburn color. Like the coming together of the fall colors mixing red, orange, and brown. Some clarity there but it’s pretty dark with a thick khaki shave cream top. Stubborn persistence with chunky splotches of cling left behind on the glass.

S: Floral with citrus fruits and some pine. Slightly catty Simcoes perking with a good mix of melon and grapefruit. Finishes with a tropical spice flare and hint of alcohol. Not particularly malty for a red. It’s all hops in the nose which I love.

T: Biscuity malt and toasted bread is quickly followed by some resinous hoppy spice and tropical citrus fruits. There is a touch of toffee sweetness and dried fruits but this one stays on the dryer side with an upper to moderate amount of bitterness. The finish lends to that traditional Sierra house flavor with some dusty earth and floral botanicals. Alcohol is masked well all throughout. A really nice offering from the Chico boys.

M: Smooth and creamy feel with a moderate sized body and nice drying crisp on the finish. Slight resinous hop character but relatively clean.

D: A very nice Red IPA with loads of hop character and solid biscuit malt base to balance. Really good as to be expected from Sierra Nevada.

Poured into snifter glass.

Appearance: Very dark ruby like color; very thick head presentation with lacings all over the glass.

Smell: Passion fruits, little bit of pineapple, some pine and grass. It's really not that strong, would appreciated it if its more up front.

Taste: Mostly hops with a little bit of malt. Some tangy sweetness at the beginning and then starts to fade with the herbal bitterness kicking in. At the finish I picked up plenty of bitter grassiness and maybe some charred oak.

Mouthfeel: Light bodied, well carbonated.

Overall: a standard IPA; I appreciated the bitter finish. It's one of those beers you just crack open on a week night!

Poured from a 12 FL. OZ. bottle into a pint glass. Bottled on day 228 of 2013 (August 16). 2013 Flipside Red IPA.

Appearance: Pours a dark ruby red with a decent off white head. Nice lacing. Body looks a little thin.

Smell: Immediate tropical fruit aroma. Citra hops seem most prevalent in the nose, although I am not as familiar with Simcoe. Slightly musty.

Taste: The first time I tried this, I tasted primarily the orange Citra flavor. Subsequently, the spicy Centennial hops seem more prevalent in the taste.

Mouthfeel: Very light mouthfeel for a Sierra Nevada IPA. Refreshing.

Overall: A nice red IPA. Certainly a cross between Torpedo (Citra) and Celebration (Centennial) with a Simoce twist!

Here’s a quick one for the new Sierra Nevada brew. Cheers!

A: Brilliant burnt orange/red with stunning clarity. Bubbles tear through the body to form a chunky, long-lasting head of velvety beige foam.

S: Pungent, resinous hops over a raw aroma of biscuit malt: orange pulp, melon, kiwi, and thick pine. Doughy bread scents beneath have a burnt edge to them, twisting this nose into something resembling jelly on rye toast.

T: Burnt toast, buttery biscuit, graham cracker, and a touch of marshmallow for the malt, spreading across the palate in a smooth, creamy fashion. The hop flavor is in perfect contrast, rising crisp and sharp with dry grass, lemon rind, and grapefruit notes. Aftertaste is surprisingly mild; hops drop quick off the palate, but a boozy heat manages to manifest after most sips.

M: A thin beer made for easy-drinking – noticeably brisk carbonation with a refreshingly light body. Almost tastes like it’s coming from a can, even from the glass.

O: I’ll take this over Tumbler any day, and hey, fill the body out a little more and I might just have a new go-to from Sierra Nevada. As it stands, though, this beer is leaning more towards a session ale, and that’s alright – it’s quite refreshing.

Appearance: Clear copper. Head is off-white with solid retention. A small bubbly, creamy cap with some nice sheets and notches of lacing. Leaves small clumps of lacing I'm the long run.

Smell: Slightly tropical. A touch of ripe mango, soft pineapple, and some tangerine. Some citrus, as in grapefruit rind. Some herbal elements as well. Malts are a bit bready with some underlying caramel malt. Earthy and lightly sweet with some caramelized sugars. A touch toasted with a small roasted element as well. Carries the distinct smell of Chico yeast and that vaguely salty thing that comes with every Sierra Nevada beer. Pear in the back.

Taste: Vaguely herbal with a nice backing of grapefruit zest and some juicy grapefruit flesh. A touch of ripe mango and some tangerine. Juicy without being too fruity. Malts offer a nice balanced sweetness. Some caramel and biscuit. Very slight toasted element. A touch of earth and some nice clean yeast. A touch of mealy pear and some distinctly dirty/earthy hops. Sierra Nevada flair is evident.

Mouthfeel: Medium trending on the lighter side. Moderate carbonation with a clean finish. Slightly crisp.

Overall: It's a Sierra Nevada IPA, and that's good by me.

Nicely balanced as to be expected. The hop profile is unique for Sierra Nevada and they do it well. Not stellar, but drinkable in spades.

Enjoyed chilled from a pint on tap at Brass Rail.

The color is deep crimson with copper hues and tinges of amber with hazed appearance and 2 finger beige cream with a tiny bead. The smell has a lot of citrus fruit with ruby red grapefruit quality and some tropical esters with light malt sweetness. The feel is great dank citrus acidity with moderate bitterness and moderately low sweetness with a medium carbonation level with dry finish.

The taste is very good, dark red grapefruit with a hop flavor which is very fresh and has slight herbal bitter flavor with a light caramel taste from the malt and a mild alcohol taste with residual bitterness as it finishes. Overall a great IPA, SN does a good job with amber ales, this is no exception -it has a similarity to Celebration and Beer Camp Bloodshot which puts it in good company, very flavorful!

Reviewed from notes taken 9-20-13.

Poured a finger of head. Body is a deep rich copper. Keeps a good frothy ring but does not lace up.

Aromas noted are oranges, grapefruit, a bit of caramel all mixed with pine and floral hops.

Pine and grapefruit start it off. It gets into floral notes with a hint of orange, then transitions into a hearty breadiness that has aspects of rye.

Medium bodied, this beer is unassuming but good. Finishes dry.
