750 ml bottle, going by the date code printed on the bottle it was bottled on September 25, 2013. Served in a Dogfish Head IPA glass, the beer pours dark reddish/brown with an inch light tan head that stays around for a long time. There's also a good amount of lacing. Aroma is nice, the brew smells like roasted malt, citrusy hops, coffee and some dark bread. It tastes like roasted malt, citrusy and earthy hops, dark bread, coffee, and some dark chocolate. There's a nice bitter finish. Mouthfeel/body is medium/full, it's creamy and slick with a good amount of soft carbonation. To me it seems more like a hoppy porter than a black IPA, but I'm not complaining. I think it's a good brew. $8.99 a bottle, definitely worth a try.

It makes me kinda angry how underrated this beer is... it kind smells like guiness, and idc what any1 says guiness is a classic, underrated beer on this site also. Its not the best black ipa but it sure does have an interesting taste and definitely gotta say to RIP to the barley

This brew was unusual and while it took me a little bit to warm up to it, I found myself coming around in the end to really enjoy this...

Wouldn't mind seeing this one become a seasonal effort... like a really hoppy porter... lots of roasted malts... hops are citrusy in nature... big finish of roasted malts and coffee...

Glad they decided to do something a little different with this offering this year... I dug it

Pours a clear reddish dark brown with billowing head. Smell: mild pine and citrus, earth, mild roast and brown bread. Taste: sharp but messy citrus focused hopping typical of the fresh/wet hop IPA style, acidic and a bit oily, marble rye. It's alright, not great.

I love black IPAs. This one strikes me as a little watery and somewhat bland, which makes sense given the color: it's not nearly as dark as I would expect from a black ipa. 21st Ammendment's black ipa isn't the best I've had but it's better than this

Poured from a 1 PT., 9.4 FL. OZ. bottle into a pint glass. Bottled on day 267 (September 24) of 2013. 2013 DevESTATEtion Black IPA Almost Homegrown Ale.

Appearance: Pours a rich dark ruby with a thick toffee colored head. Very robust looking. This monster head is going nowhere and is present past the last sip - creamy and long lasting like a stout.

Smell: Citra, Citra, and more Citra! I love the aroma because I am a huge fan of this hop. Tropical fruits, slight citrus orange rind. If you can wade through the hop aroma, you can pick up a bit of coffee from the dark malts.

Taste: Less hoppy and more dark malt flavor than the nose suggests. I tend to think that the wet hops are less intense, yet somehow smoother and better tasting - which may lose their impact in a black ale. Strong coffee bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Very creamy, smooth and stout-like.

Overall: I drink this with the lament and heavy-heart that it is taking the place of this year's Estate Homegrown Ale, one of my all-time favorites. I am not a huge fan of dark ales (or roasted malts in general), but this does taste good. I like the fact that Sierra Nevada was able to salvage a semi-homegrown ale with an organic twist by using their homegrown hops. I look forward to next year's return of their traditional Estate Homegrown Ale!

Thanks to Bilco for sharing the bottle.

Appearance: Rich dark copper with deep browns and reds shot through with a bruised black. Head is a fluffy, creamy, and loose beige. Decent retention leaves a clumpy cap. Some notches and splotches of lacing.

Smell: A very mild take on the style. Some roasted barley coupled with a soft wet hop. Some citrus and earth coupled with a bit of floral and citrus elements. It's very distinctly Sierra Nevada complete with Chico yeast. Some small hints of cocoa with some caramelized malt sweetness. A touch of biscuit in the back as well. Very slight hint of something burnt/charred.

Taste: Straight up roasted barley with a soft dusting of cocoa. Hops run with a damp earthiness coupled with a mild citrus and pine bitterness. A touch of old coffee. Nice balance between the wet hop and the darker malt body. Some caramelized malt sweetness, but it's mild. Carries the super clean Chico yeast finish. Very mild grassy element with some lighter fruity elements.

Mouthfeel: Nice and creamy medium body with a slightly below average carbonation. Super easy drinking with a clean finish.

Overall: Damn you Sierra Nevada and your drinkable beer.

It's solid and that's exactly what you would expect from Sierra Nevada. It's a damn drinkable take and I want to see it in regular rotation. Well done sirs/ma'ams.
