Decent, well thought out selection with almost everything refrigerated. The guy behind the counter knew his beer and was cool to talk for a while about it. Almost everything is refrigerated, which is a plus in my book. All in all there was definitely less beer than WF in the area but none of the beer that was "missing" was anything that was worthwhile (read: cut out a lot of fluff) and there were a couple guezes that I have yet to find at WF. Solid selection and good service although not quite enough beer here to warrant a special trip. If you're in the area it is the beer store to stop in at.

The façade looks like it was taken out of the 1950s, but when you walk-in, you'll remember you're living in today. At least ¾ of the beer is refrigerated, although the refrigeration is not particularly cold. But they got a lot of good stuff. I got into an easy conversion with the lone guy working at the store. Friendly guy, to say the last.

Here's a list of some of the beers available: Brewdog, Rochefort, Moylan's, Allagash, Rodenbach (including 2007 Special Vintage!), Stone, Ballast Point (including Sculpin), Gouden Carolus, Westmalle, Ayinger, Cantillon, Firestone, Flying Dog, Uncommon Brewers, Wynchwood, Beamish, St-Ambroise...no Russian River though!

I would rate the selection closer to 4.25, but I'll round up in this case given the local market size. If this were in in/around San Francisco, I would score it a "4". Worth the extra time getting to, and it's about 10 minutes from downtown Santa Cruz.

To paraphrase other reviewers, 41st has the best selection in Santa Cruz. I was a little worried that the new bevmo that just went in a couple blocks down the street was going to make 41st irrelevant, but it still has a much better selection of Belgian British, and German beers, which are all sold in singles for the most part. Not as many american craft varieties, but plenty of stuff that bevmo does not have, including more local stuff (Uncommon Brewers). Many beers are sold as singles for just a small mark-up, which bevmo does not do at all. Just recently, Brewdog*s lineup is available including the paradox series, though theyre not cheap. They also have a nice selection of lambic for those so inclined

This store has an incredibly knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly staff. Every time I go there I can count on their recommendations to guide me towards trying something great I haven't tried before. They even remember what I picked up the last time I was in and remember to ask how I enjoyed it.
This place has quick turnover and is therefore a great alternative to places like bevmo, which have such a huge amount of beer in stock that it doesn't get sold quick enough, and leaves you wondering about things without freshness dates. I've yet to have anything from 41st that wasn't fresh.
They have a great selection of both imports and domestics all at reasonable prices. If you live in the area and you haven't checked it out, I highly recommend it.

41st Avenue Liquors is nestled in a huge brick facade just west of the highway.
The selection is easily the best in the area and beyond. There are big cooler doors straight towards the back of the store that contain lots of US micros with a focus on west coast stuff, especially northern California. Drake's, Moylan's, Bear Republic, and Lagunitas all have several offerings here. Another cooler door is devoted to Belgians, including St Bernardus, Rochefort, Westmalle, Fantome, DuPont, and many more. They also carry a nice German and British selection in the coolers. If you turn around from the wall of refrigerated beer, there's a low series of shelves that contain many more rare and unique beers. Featured here are Cantillon, Girardin, hard-to-find Allagash, Rogue XS series, etc. Stone now distributes here and there are several of their offerings carried here.

This was the first beer store I visited when I moved out to Santa Cruz from Michigan. My first impression was WOW-they had Stone, AleSmith, and a number of Nor-Cal brews from Lost Coast, Moylan's, Laguanitas, and Marin. They also have Farmhouse brews from Gilroy along with a very large selection of Belgian brews-however, my focus is Micros.

Service has never been an issue-it's always good.

Everything in the "Peoples Republic" of Santa Cruz is more expensive.

PS. I want to correct something in my initial review-they have the best selection of Belgium beers in SC about 2 dozen- 10/4/06

All in all I always stop off here to see if they have scored a new brew.

Stumbled into this beer/liquor store while driving around aimlessly for work like a door-to-door salesman. I rarely get out of San Francisco and was quite excited to see if, just on the other side of the Bay, I could find new and exciting beers/beer destinations. This was the only stop I made, and really the only stop I had to make. The inside is huge, high ceilings and wide walls, allowing shelf space for tons of alcoholic beverages. The beer, though, is directly in the center: walk in through the door, past the register, and you're standing in front of several coolers of hand selected beers. I talked a bit with the owner - he told me that I had come in at a bad time and that they only had about half their beers in stock. I can't imagine what this place looks like with everything in - at half capacity there was an overwhelming selection of domestic micros (albeit mostly west coast) and hard to find imports.

I highly recommend that all beer enthusiasts pass through this place.
