Bought a rack of various local beers while in Berlin recently. Nice golden yellow pour with quickly fading head and decent lacing. Typical dry, yeasty German pils nose. Good balance between the malt and hops. Strong metallic aftertaste that I kind of like in a pilsner. Crisp and dry finish make it quite drinkable.

International Green Week, Berlin 2012: this year Hall 22a is shared by Berlin and the state of Schleswig-Holstein, by the time I’ve got here I’m ready for another beer and some lunch. I notice some seats with a table and lead my little group to a well earned rest. My thick Bockwurst and Lentil soup went down very nicely with the Pilsner.
Potsdamer Rex Pils is well known to me and I’ve had it many times over the years: never got round to reviewing it for some reason, rectified now though.
The regular Pilsner look, golden, clear and bright: this one came in a 0.4 litre handled glass with an overflowing foam head of snowy white bubbles.
The smell is again your typical Pilsner non-show, some hop esters and grainy hints, but nothing much at all: gets my usual score of 3 for a non-smelling Lager/Pils/Hell.
The taste is hop dry, yet fairly sweet in the initial sip; becoming more bitter as the mouth dries (pretty quickly once the liquid has left the mouth).
Medium body strength for a Pilsner, good carbonisation and ‘spritzy’ on the tongue: had a lot, lot worse on my travels and I’ll have no qualms about having another when in this part of the world.

Bottle into Guinness pint glass in Berlin, Germany. Reviewed live. Bottle acquired at beer specialty (laden) shop in Berlin, Germany.
A: Two finger head of decent cream, nice thickness, and good retention. A clear yellow colour. Generally appealing.
Sm: Just malt and barley. That's literally it.
T: Crystal hops don't save the generic malt/barley body. Quite simple for the style, though some cream on the open is a nice touch. Fairly complex compared to most budget beers, but balanced less than average. Barely a pilsener.
Mf: Smooth and wet. Coarse enough climax, but unsubstantiated by the lack of flavours in the body. Doesn't quite complement the body. Bleh.
Dr: Very well priced in comparison to the US of A, but otherwise fails to justify its price. Pretty garbage overall. Slides down easy enough - and will get you bollocksed - but not worth it compared to other German beers on offer.

Poured from a half-litre bottle into a small pilsner glass.
A: Thin, pitted head doesn't endure long atop the crystal-clear pale yellow body. Barely any noticeable carbonation.
S: Not much. Some malty grain, maybe.
T: Not impressed. A thin grain flavour fails to be improved by faint herbal flavours. Aftertaste is vaguely bitter.
M: No real comment. It's...okay, I guess.
D: I'm just not a fan of this pilsner. It's not *bad*, it's just not very good. I won't be drinking it again.

Had on-tap at a restaurant in Potsdam, left pretty unimpressed. It's clear and bubbly with a head that didn't stick well, the smell is an average dry north German nose, and the taste wasn't bad, but it was a little bit astringent and felt unbalanced--where were the malts? The mouthfeel was thin and slightly flat. Nothing exciting about this beer.
