on-tap at eureka cafe

Pours a very dark brown with a lasting small tan head. Leaves a bit of lacing down the glass.

Beer smells of roasted and sweet malt manifesting as coffee and caramel. Palate mirrors taste with strong coffee and dark chocolate hitting the tongue first. Followed by a wave of roasted bitterness and an overly astringent finish. Sweetness definitely takes a back seat to bitterness, but it is there if you look for it. Finish is lingering with the astringency particularly noticeably at the back of the tongue and lasting for well after the sip.

overall for a beer of 4 percent it has big flavor, which would make it a nice easy drinker. however, astringency started to bother me a lot towards the bottom of my glass.

Mussel Inn Dark Horse Black Lager on tap in the beer garden at the brewpub. 4% ABV

Deep and dark mahogany; clear with a decent head.

Feel: Lightly crisp, with low (too low) carbonation and a semi-dry finish. A bit watery

Aroma: a mix of lager and schwarzbier.

The flavor is more average but certainly satisfying. Lasting, mildly bitter, hoppy aftertaste lacks dark roasted malt flavor.

O: Not bad, but disappointing.
