Head is smooth and creamy atop this murky dark brown beer, but unfortunately it recedes almost immediately. Good look on the body but the top needs assistance.

Nose is strong enough, with plenty of coffee, molasses, caramelized sugar, and fig to get me by. It actually smells a lot like when you get institutional coffee in a styrofoam cup (at a conference, church, a funeral) and then you let it get cold.

The flavor is quite forward with the coffee grounds and other roasted notes. It's a little thin and watery overall, which doesn't help the bitterness clean up off the palate. Mouthfeel should be brawnier to deal with the amount of roasted bitterness. That said, I like the flavors and think there's something good going on here. Hops are a mild earthy accompaniment with a weak herbal tea finish.

There's a lot of positives here, with the aggressive flavoring and use of malts, but the big negative is the soda-like body. This is supposed to be a beer for kings (according to the bottle) so let's give them even more of the good stuff.

Had a few while in Guadalajara, out of all of Minerva's beers, this one is the one I liked the most.
I guess coming from the states im definitely spoiled so I was a bit let down, but I do like what Minerva is doing, hopefully they can focus on more agressive styles in the future.

I was highly impressed by this effort from Minerva. Had this in a bottle in Mexico City, and actually brought one home to add to the collection. The beer is true to the style, pouring a solid black color (although not a ton of head). Lacing is impressive.

Taste wise, it's a very good example of the style. Nothing too crazy - tastes slightly of coffee and chocolate, but light on the palate. I like that Minerva in this case stuck to the style, and produced not just a credible result, but actually a very good beer.

All in all, a solid step forward for the Mexican craft brewing scene. If you're looking for dark beers in Mexico, this is definitely one to try.

It pours pretty much black, with a thin tan head. The nose is roasted malt, charcoal, coffee, bitter chocolate and liquorice. The taste is roasted malt, rich coffee, light acidity, charcoal, bitter cocoa, hint of dark fruit, light liquorice, with a dry, toasty finish. Medium body and a fine, prickly carbonation. Well balanced and pretty flavoursome. Another good effort.

A: Intense dark brown color almost black, when against light it cannot pass

S: Toasted malt, almost coffee can be sensed some caramel or brown sugar is at the back.

T: Really intense toasted feeling, certainly sweet at the beginning and bitter at the end, it is really a balanced combination that lets the bittersweet sensation.

M: Robust body that can be feel as creamy in the mouth, good starting and good ending, good balance for a stout but nos so bitter or heavy, alcohol good enough.

A: Looking is pretty good a dark brown color is almost confused with black, head is big with medium retentions and slow dissipation formed by brown small bubbles carbonation should be rich because it forms a thick permanent layer on top but as is too dark is not visible.

S: Nice aroma coffee notes along with the toasted barley malts, this beer is as expected.

T: Also tasting is good, but there is a little problem at the end with a faint flavor of something like soap, it starts with an intense toasted malt flavor, it has also some hops.

M: The sensations is balanced at some point the sweetness is mixed with the bitterness and it is balanced, the end is long but not as intense as could, some dry sensation is kept on the mouth.

355ml bottle. All Spanish on the label marketing descriptions - all I can decipher is some reference to a 'new beer revolution'...

This beer pours a cola-tinged black, with significant reddish highlights, and three fingers of thin puffy, specked tan head, which sinks away slowly and evenly, rendering a swath of layered cumulonimbus lace around the glass.

It smells of dry, roasted coffee, mild chocolate malt, a bit of savoury meatiness, some tepid caramel, and earthy, herbal hops. The taste is big toasted coffee malt, bittersweet cocoa, a twinge of milky sourness, and earthy, leafy hops, a hollow citrus essence kicking at the floorboards.

The carbonation is la Migra-spotting sedate, the body a decent medium weight, and gingerly silky smooth, some weakly prickly hop character come around to mess with it. It finishes a little more off-dry than a typical Irish Dry, but it's all good - a lingering of that nice chocolate/coffee blend is most welcome.

A genuinely tasty stout, from a heretofore unlikely source - the same region that provides the world with the devil's juice - tequila. Well balanced, big on flavour, and not complicated. Good stuff - viva la revolución!
