Attractive orange-brown body with a sticky and creamy tanned head. Clear with strong color and foam for a very nice look indeed.
Nose is surprisingly hoppy, and way beyond a normal Mexican beer much less an amber ale ("obscura" here). Caramel-soaked grains and an herbal punch round out a solid aroma.
The flavor again brings a reasonably strong hop note, mostly herbal with some citric undertones. Pine mingled with caramel and toffee, fairly sweet with a mineral finish. Slightly watery mouthfeel, something's gotta give with this much hopping and only 4.8% alcohol.
Reviewing is necessarily subjective, and where you live counts for a lot. In the States, I would not be so high on this brew, which is fairly straightforward, balanced but hedging slightly towards hops, and quite light in booze. Here in Mexico, this comes out as strongly hoppy to the point of being out of balance; and I love it. I know that BAs with access to hoppy beers all the time would have nothing to do with Rila, but I enjoy it and hope to see it again soon.
*From El Deposito in DF. Brewed in tribute to bike culture and a bike-sharing program in Guadalajara called Bikla that looks totally rad.
