From growler to nonic pint glass
Another style-bending brew in consecutive reviews, both from Kern. Calling this an IPA doesn't do it justice - this is a definitive session beer, custom-brewed for drinking long hours in the hot California sun. And it's possibly the best sub-5% "IPA" I've had (it seems a lot of reviews/hads are based on personal preference, not within the context of what the brewer was trying to do). It's refreshing, flavorful as hell, and full of tropical nuances. Here's the breakdown:
A: Copper-tan in color, clear, with a big frothy head that leaves sticky lacing all over the glass.
S: Vinous, assertive hop-essence anchor the bouquet, as distinct tropical notes abound. A little floral, maybe grassy, with a touch of honey sweetness rounding things out.
T/M: Not as hop-forward as the nose implied, as sugary sweetness quickly matches assertive hops, yielding incredible tropical undertones - perhaps a mix of papaya and mango. Notes of crakery grain and dried grass pop up toward the finish, which is short and perfectly bittersweet. The light, oil-free complexion splashes over the palate, allowing for little residuals between sips. A preeminent session brew.
Serving type: growler

On tap for The Bruery Sucreversary held at The Phoenix Club in Anaheim, CA.
Pours a hazy golden-yellow with a foamy beige head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, herbal hop, and onion and garlic aromas. Taste is much the same with malt and herbal hop flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer that is tasty and light.
