4.2/5  rDev -0.5%
look: 4 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 4 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4.25

22 oz bottle poured into pint glass.

Appearance: pours pale gold with a thin white head.

Smell: tons of tropical fruit - papaya, mango - along with some grapefruit. No real malt presence. Hop intensity rivals many DIPAs.

Taste: similar to the smell but toned down a notch. Some more pine comes through here along with the tropical/citrus hop presence. Just a touch of biscuity malt flavor. No alcohol heat. Moderate battering hops on the finish.

Mouthfeel: body is medium to light. Healthy carbonation. Quite smooth and refreshing.

Overall: top-notch IPA in the aroma department. Flavor wise not quite at the level of the best examples of the style but still a very good offering overall. (694 characters)

L: Pours clear dark amber under a thin white foam cap that quickly reduces to a thick film.
S: Resiny, citrusy aromas with some fruit and light malt.
T: Attacks the palate with a burst of malt that dissolves into citrus rinds, resin and melon. In the aftertaste fruit, malt and citrus rind linger for several minutes.
F: Medium to medium full body and medium carbonation.
O: Big but refreshing and very easy to drink. (421 characters)

look: 4 | smell: 4 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4.5

Pours cloudy orange color with a creamy 1 finger light tan head that faded about average time and left very good foamy lacing coating the sides and rings as it went down.

Smells of tropical and citrus fruit like orange, pineapple, grapefruit, lemon, tangerine and all things citrus hops, followed by piney hops, caramel, biscuit, light spices like pepper and coriander and apple skin or white grape. The malt is there, but weak, and the hops basically dominate and make it unbalanced but it smells really damn good and fruity so I can overlook the lack of balance. Classic West Coast IPA nose.

Tastes like the nose with tropical and citrus up front which includes orange, pineapple, lemon, grapefruit, tangerine, passion fruit, citrus hops, some tea leaf. piney hops, caramel, biscuit, honey, light spices like pepper and coriander, cracker, lightly toasted grains, green apple, white grape juice and a slightly chalky yeast note at the end. The flavor is much more balanced with enough of the malt backbone to stabilize this brew and keep the bitterness in check. It's really fresh tasting and well hopped.

Mouthfeel is thin and bordering on watery, yet sort of slick as it slides down very easy with mild carbonation, a medium body and a slightly bitter finish that's on the dry side. The spices add to the brew and the malt comes through enough to linger after the hops basically dazzle the tastebuds, all the while hiding the ABV perfectly.

This was extremely easy to drink and as the name states outstanding. I will have to order more of this from San Diego and ship it to NY, it was very damn tasty. (1,609 characters)

Look: slightly murky amber and frothy eggshell head.
Smell: Dank! Tropical and Piney.
Taste: More piney than tropical.
Feel: Slightly under carbonate and very little bitterness bite at the end. Very smooth.
Overall: Perfect example of west coast IPA. (251 characters)

look: 4.25 | smell: 4 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4 | overall: 4

Appearance - The bear is a copper color with a bubbly white head.

Smell - The nose lightly grassy with citrus notes in the background.

Taste - The initial taste centers on peppery grass notes with citrus and dry bready notes toward the back. The profile is light and refreshing, making thus an easy drinker. The taste comes to a close with a resiny finish.

Mouthfeel - The carbonation is fairly low, allowing the resin to linger.

Overall - This is a nice light refreshing IPA. (484 characters)

Pours a slightly cloudy yellow golden color with white head. Citrus fruits, grapefruit, and some pineapple and floral notes on the nose; follows onto the palate. Finishes with a nice hop bite, but also very smooth. (214 characters)

For an IPA probably the best I had thus far. Had at my buddies strangers bar in el Centro. Nice head and lacing layers. Good smell and taste. Definitely get it again!

Ok it's 6/12/2015
I had it again.. I cudnt wait to pour it out. Shared it with my sister and she loved it. But I had many more ipa's and dipa's since my first "just outstanding" experience. Still very good IPA and I would definitely try it again but my first grade of 4.94 had to be changed. Still recommend this beer and I'll buy it again. (517 characters)

This is a nice IPA. It's a nice subtle IPA with no gimmicks. It has a nice, and slight malt character. With a nice bitterness that finishes in the back. This was a simple but good IPA. Nice tropical fruit, and slight mango in the end. (235 characters)

Just a simple review here....from a bomber into a glass. Great head. Aromas of pine, orange, citrus, bread. Tastes of bitter pinecone, grapefruit, bread with an alcohol finish...realy brite though. Feels just fine.

Will def grab more of this. (243 characters)

Just tried a fresh bottle for the first time in several years. Aroma is outstanding. Tastes about as decent as I remembered. I'm a little surprised by all the praise for this beer in a crowded IPA market. (204 characters)

Very sweet and hoppy smell. Unfiltered look. Really hoppy taste with alittle malty finish. There is s hint of citrus. This is kind of like dirtwolf and 90 minute ipa mixed together. This taste stronger boozier than a standard ipa. But the abv is only 6.8% but there is all this flavor, that's just outstanding. (310 characters)

Pours a slightly hazy orange with a white head. Smell is very citrusy with some biscuity malt. Taste is huge citrus with slight floral and pine. Bisuity and toasty malts. Pretty bitter as well. Mouthfeel is just right for this style. Maybe a bit thick. Good carbonation. Overall, a pretty good IPA but nothing special. This is on the level as Torpedo for me. For a beer that advertises Simcoe and Amarillo, I really can't taste the Amarillo. A much better beer that pairs the two is Alpine Duet. (495 characters)

I don't know how the bros say this is only an 83. This damn good, refreshing, highly drinkable. Just an outstanding WCIPA. Great hop notes, citrus, mango, peach, apricot, etc. Nice balanced backbone. Cristp and clean. Sticky and danky. I can't say another good things. (268 characters)

Look: Cloudy golden amber with a thick white head. Lots of legs and quite nice lacing

Smell: One pungent brew with an explosion of Amarillo and simcoe hops right out of the bottle! Huge piney citrus notes with a sweet malt making itself ever present. Piney hops, lime, lemon, white nectarines, some light orange blossom, mandarin oranges, more pine, sweet malty notes round up the rear but are just barely there covered by more pine. Smells fantastic!

Taste: Much more balanced then the nose lead on as the pine and citrus notes meld quite nicely with a sweet malt leading to a quite nice balanced profile. Getting pine, nectarine, lemon notes, tangerine, sweet malt, earthy hops, with another wave of malt to smooth things out. Quite tasty.

Mouthfeel: Resiny hops stick to the teeth with a medium body and a quite bitter finish that dries very slowly. Very nice.

Overall: One outstanding brew. The hops are obviously the main show here but they at balanced really well with that malt to make one tasty IPA. Loving these simcoe and Amarillo IPAs and I think more brews should use this awesome pair up! Excellent IPA and one I wish I saw more. (1,150 characters)

22 oz. bottle purchased from CraftCity.com, unknown packaging/bottling dates (bizarre to me that lots of the West Coast breweries don't bottle date their IPAs); poured into my FFF snifter and drank over an hour

A: 3/3 - golden-orange coloration; low clarity (cannot see or read through); initially fluffy white head resolves into a lacing of alternate size carbonation bubbles with some lake effect; moderate alcohol legs

A: 10/12 - pine, citrus, resin, grapefruit and touch of dank; moderate biscuity/sharp malt character; some alcohol when really digging; no diacetyl; no DMS

T: 16/20 - a moderate bite of bitterness on the anterior palate that is replaced by PNW hop flavors - pine, resin, tangerine and grapefruit (feel like I can really tell that this beer is brewed with Simcoe and Amarillo); a slight malty/breadiness and alcohol on the back end; finishes super dry

M: 4/5 - moderate body (with hop oils and alcohol); moderate carbonation; high drinkability

T: 9/10 - just a classically outstanding West Coast IPA with the juxtaposition of pine (Simcoe) and citrus (Amarillo); totally crushable to boot - feel like I could drink another 1-2 bombers alone tonight; high recommended and curious to cf. to Alpine Duet, which uses the same hops

TOTAL - 42/50 (1,267 characters)

excellent ipa, pulling hop characteristics from all parts of the spectrum. lots of citrus in the nose, lemony and oily, more pine in the flavor, very north woodsy, certainly the bitterness is there, but it also has a fresher, almost vegetal bit to it as well. i like such a well rounded profile to it, and the brilliance is that it seems to all fit, nothing muddled or confused or anything, its really just super well dialed in. some grain character too to balance, some medium crystal malt in with the two row, and a mild nutty base results. that goes really well with the pine side of the hops, which are stronger in the finish than anywhere else. its juicy fresh, a great example of the style, and a really comfortable abv for me personally in an ipa. if this were an everyday option, my fridge would be full of it. i can think of no higher compliment to an ale like this. i wish these guys were in colorado. (911 characters)

Poured from a 22 oz bomber into a tulip glass. Enjoyed this for IPA Day (8/7/2014). I've had this many many times due to its easy accessibility.

Appearance: pours a lucious golden orange with a two finger+ off white head. Sticky lacing left on the sides of the glass.

Aroma: big citrus, tropical fruit and grapefruit notes. This is the very definition of juicy.

Taste/mouthfeel: it says it on the bottle. Just Outstanding! The front has those big juicy tropical notes. The middle has a touch of pine, but a touch only. The finish showcases the wonderful balanced maltiness with a bit of a citrusy sweetness. Nice full mouthfeel.

Overall: This is my go to IPA and is KRBC's flagship for good reason. Nothing but outstanding things to say. (742 characters)

They should change the name of this one to "Just Another IPA"

No visible dating on the bottle - pours a nice copperish color with little head and leaves very little lacing - Sweet sticky caramel is the predominant smell - Taste is just that... Caramel with some earthy pine and floral notes - smooth drinking with a slightly sticky aftertaste - not bad, not great, not likely to buy it again, but not going to turn it down if handed one either... (447 characters)

not seeing any bottled on info on this one. bomber bottle.

A: slightly hazy brew. orange ish in color. bright white head is pretty frothy. good lacing, good retention. definitely pretty hazy though.

S: really bright, citrus focused aromatics. however, there is a slight oxidized aroma in there as well. minor cara malt smell too.

D: drinks super light. citrus, mild pine flavor. a decent amount of maltiness as well. especially coming up about halfway and into the finish. that and plenty of bitterness. good stuff.

M: moderate body with a moderate carb. pretty average.

D: good stuff. not blowing my socks off but certainly a well done, very drinkable IPA. im not sure if this wasn't super fresh, but I would love to try some at the source. getting past the oxidation, this is good. (791 characters)

Bottle: Poured a nice golden color ale with a nice foamy head with excellent retention and some super great lacing. Aroma of fresh pineapple and citrus is very pleasant with nice flora undertones. Taste is also dominated by huge floral aroma of fresh grapefruit with some nice citrus notes with a lightly sweet malt backbone. Body is about average for style with great carbonation. World-class IPA which is approaching Alpine level but not quite there yet. (456 characters)

A: Pours out a hazy orange. Can see little floaties. This one is unfiltered, it would appear. Darkish in color. Gives off a finger and a half off white head. Retention is moderate. Lacing is absolutely wonderful. Carbonation appears to be minimal, but it's hard to tell amongst the hazy and sediment.

S: Got the West Coast part down. Big pine, grapefruit and spicy tropical notes. Also a bit of spiced tangerine/orange. Malt comes through with some caramel and lightly nutty sweetness. Am getting a slightly catty/onion undertone from the Simcoe, as well.

T: Big hit of grain up front. Initial surge of lime and kumquat pith lead the hop charge. These transition mid palate into more standard IPA territory of pine, some herbaceousness and a touch of grapefruit. As it warms, the malt begins to open up, but never takes on any sweetness. Instead, it's a grassy, grainy style of malt. Bitterness asserts on the finish, bringing back bitter citrus peel, pine needles and a floral characteristic. Finishes extremely dry, bordering astringent.

M: Oh, so incredibly light for an IPA. Crisp on the palate, but with fairly subdued carbonation.

O: Very well executed, but somewhat lackluster. Lacks the complexity and depth of flavor of the top tier IPA's. Still, glad to have tried it. (1,286 characters)

22oz Bomber perfectly poured into a tulip with slightly hazy gold color that produced nice head with the most perfect lacing of any of the beers I have had lately.

First sip is a dream and stands on citrus and pear notes which ballance very well with moderate maltyness and perfect carbonation. Smell is slightly piney and floral which seems to result in excess from the dry hopping process as stated on the bottle.

Very drinkable for myself but maybe a bit hoppy for the timid. This is the first time I have tried Kern River Brews but not the last. Highly recommend this CA IPA. (583 characters)

Appearance: Slightly cloudy gold color with a bronze hue. The beer has a modest-sized white head that slowly faded to a small head that stuck around.

Smell: Piney hop aromas feature prominently with some grassy and citrus notes.

Taste: The pine aromas an carry over and feature in the taste followed by the grassy and citrus notes. The beer finish fairly dry with the pine notes first followed by the grassy/hay notes.

Mouth-feel: On the light side of medium bodied with a modest level of carbonation.

Overall: Good IPA that is not overly bitter but flavorful and nicely balanced. (586 characters)
