On tap at Blue Palms' 5th Anniversary in Hollywood, CA.

Call the fire brigade! Raul got himself another hot one! And Raul means, tastes like 75 unleaded! It's ok, but what is this hot dog hop?! Dale Earnhardt must be proud because this hot son of a gun must be brewed by NASCAR! Good, but too "rocket fuel" for Raul's liking.

Peace!

Imbibed at Gourmet Haus for Kern Rover tap takeover, 2/11/13.

Pours a very pale yellow, clear, with thick two finger head. Looks delicious in the nonic it was served in. The head dissipated relatively quickly and lacing suffers as a result. Tr aroma is nothing but hops: grapefruit, lemon, and pine in a Pliny type way with more pine. I get a cracker aroma from the glass with a good swirl. Where the aroma is light the taste plays as shade. Flavor reflects the aroma but it turns very bitter. It's not harsh, but overpowering and it lingers. Lets you know what kind of beer you're drinking. Don't really get much malt from this showcase of hops. Finish is slightly dry while feel is light. Just Outstanding is aptly named. I'd pick one up if I ever see it, but its no Pliny clone an stands on its own.

On tap at Toronado in San Diego

A - Perfect orange that is slightly hazy. One finger of white head with small bubbles that sticks to the glass very nicely.

S - Light nose. Pine, light grapefruit, and some bready malts.

T - Light bitter bite. Almost too smooth for an IPA, but this isn't a fault. Easy drinking with crisp pine up front that really mellows out into a smooth, sweet malty finish. Really amazing IPA that gets better and better as you drink it.

M - Medium body with really nice carbonation.

O - Another outstanding IPA from Kern River. Very sessionable and so smooth. These guys are true masters with hops.

On-tap at Local Habit. This keg was brought back by the bartender after visiting Kern River a few weeks ago.

a- amber-gold ipa. good head, screams ipa.

s- inviting. olfactory not slammed by hops. reminds me of duet by alpine.

t- again, reminds me of duet. there are a couple of hops working together here, but it feels like they almost zero each other out. you get a bit of bite early, but by the end of the glass it had lost most of that zing. drink colder than warm.

m- fell a little flat on the tongue. a weightier ipa, with thick, slow flavors.

o- this is a beer in a minor key. not a bright, hoppy ipa, more of a cloudy, moody ipa. simcoe & amarillo, but just not as good as alpine's duet.

Had on tap 7/31 @ KRBC. Filled two growlers and brought them back to OC for the next week.

A - Golden, pale IPA with a decent head.

S - There is a lot going on here. TONS of citrus, pine, and a few of my friends picked up strawberry.

T - Great citrus and fruit taste with a balance of hops and malt. You can seriously drink this stuff all day and not get tired of it.

M - Light, perfectly carbonated. Really good body to this beer.

O - This is one of my favorite IPAs. As of last month, I rank this higher than Blind Pig or any other widely available IPAs. KRBC is really kicking the crap out of other peoples IPAs/DIPAs.

On tap at BEachwood BBQ on 7/2/11

A - Slightly cloudy medium orange/yellow colour with one finger of bubbly white head.

S - Robust citrus and pine notes hit the nose right away with a very apparent bitterness and a good caramel malt backbone.

T - Follows the nose. Grapefruit and orange rind. Very bitter. Light sweet malt backbone. Definitely a hop bomb.

M - Medium body. Chewy. Light carbonation.

O - A great west coast IPA.

A: Thin head that dispersed quickly with some lace trailing. Hazy amber in color.

S: Guava and light hints of citrus.

T: Guava. Tasted lots of Guava and it worked surprisingly well. Solid hop profile, nothing brutishly over powering, but well balanced against the malt. Dry but sweet finish.

M: Light carbonation. Light to medium bodied. Slightly sticky on the lips. Solid IPA.

O: An exceptional IPA. It's no Citra DIPA, but it certainly holds its own among the sea of Indian Pale Ales.

On tap at my local tavern. Into a 20oz. mug.

The beer arrives with a two finger head of pure white foam floating atop the beautiful orange, amber colored goodness that is Kern's Just Outstanding IPA. The nose is citrus and biscuity malt with a bit of pine. Taste is huge grapefruit, and tangerine backed by a light, sweet, malt backbone and some piney bitterness. The finish is lush and juicy with a wonderful bitter aftertaste. The beer is medium bodied with a level of carbonation which imparts a creamy texture and great quaffability. Overall this is the epitome of a perfectly balanced west coast IPA. Citrus, pine, light malt presence, great bitterness, what more could you ask for? Kern hits it out of the park with this one. Highly recommended!

I had this on draft at my favorite little bar, "Instant Replay" in Canoga Park, California.

Poured from the tap into a standard pint glass.

The beer pours a hazy amber yellow, with an orange hue. About a two inch white colored head rose, and slowly settle down to about a three quarter inch head with layers of nice lacing on the glass.

The beer smells of grapefruit, citrus, floral hops, and pine. Not too much malt.

The taste has an initial bitterness on the first draw, but is quickly followed with nice notes of grassy hops, pineapple, a touch of sweetness in the middle and towards the end, and then another hop crispness punch on the finish.

Mouth feel is medium, crisp, and smooth.

Overall, this beer is a "just outstanding IPA". Since it makes a nice made up story, I'm going to guess were the first words uttered when the brewer tasted it for the first time, and thus the name. Could easily have more than one in a sitting.

On Tap at The Factory Gastrobar in Long Beach, CA.

A-Very interesting orange-hued ale, with decent lacing.

S-Nice green nose.

T-Expect a little more from that great bouquet, but still a very nice hop profile.

M--Very nice on the palate. Body from the malt structure is there, just no malty flavor.

D-Palate coating hop oils leave a giant green aftertaste, which wouldn't be ideal if it didn't taste so good.

I really look forward to seeing KRBC continue to emerge.

Enjoyed a pint at O'Brien's Pub earlier today for maybe around $5.00.

Beer was served orange with a nice solid white head that left lacing behind as i sipped.

Nose was very pungent floral hops that did not fade.

Taste was tropical, orange and a hint of mango, with a solid caramel/pale malt base that was fairly balanced for the style. Some pine in the background but not resinous.

Mouthfeel was very smooth, perhaps due to mild carbonation.

Drinkability was quite good. This was a very good representation of the west coast ipa style. I may have to go back to Whole Foods to bring a bottle back to Arizona!

On tap at Tony's Darts Away in Burbank, CA.

Man oh man, do i love this beer. I would drink this with a spicy sausage covered in peppers and onions at Tony's and it was just about as close to beer pairing heaven as it gets. Something about pairing an IPA with that spicy sausage and pepper combo that just makes sense. It almost nullifies the heat and lets the flavors emerge better in both. Love this beer's heavy pine nose and taste along with its more citrusy side. I would drink this all the time if it was possible, the most drinkable IPA i have had although Hangar 24 comes close.

Poured on-tap at the brewery in Kernville into a pint glass. The beer has a decent golden-brown coloring, with a spaced and thin, light head. You get a nose full of pine and hops in the aromas. Very heavy hops flavor on initial tasting, but without the typical bitterness that usually accompanies it. The beer tastes very green. There are also heavy floral flavors on the front of the tongue. The beer is very full, but smooth, in mouth, despite the robust flavors. The beer has minimal aftertaste, and is extremely easy to drink.

On tap at Toronado, nice to find this beer here. Tap to pint, the beer is amber-colored, a bit hazy and topped by a frothy head that retains well, coating the glass with rings of lace as I slowly sip. The hop character is fruity and tropical; guava, passionfruit, a bit of pineapple. Similar flavors present themselves to the palate; guava is especially prominent, along with pineapple, mango, passionfruit and bitter grapefruit toward the finish. It's on the dry and clean side despite the big fruity hop character, with a smooth bitter finish that lingers on in a mild way. This is aptly named.

I realized that I had not yet reviewed this particular brew from Kern River. And I have been advocating this wondrous brew by giving it as an extra on my trades. I received a fresh keg of it and promptly put it in the kegerator. So this review is based on a super fresh keg pour and not the bottle, which surprisingly got way better than the bottle (something that is hard to do with such a great tasting beer).

A: darker orange, copper appearance with an offwhite head that held at 2 fingers for quite some time. Not your typical IPA hue, but then again, this is NOT your typical American IPA.

S: holy shit, at first pull of the tap handle my bar area filled with the delicious aroma of ripe apricot, sticky resinous hops, some floral aromas...and I thought popping the top off of the 22 oz bottles released some delightful aromas...a fresh keg produced 100% better results! Awesome

T: Again, I thought it was going to be hard to beat the taste out of a fresh bottle, but WOW, I mean just WOW, fresh from the keg is the only way to go on this beer. Just Outstanding really nails it. Slight alcohol warmth to it in the end.

M: Sticky oily mouthfeel, perfect for the hopheads. Not to overpowering, still well balanced. Medium carbonation and tons of body on this one.

D: I think I can easily drink 4-5 pints of this, however after a while the ABV kicks in and realize its time to go to sleep. I am so glad that I have a keg of this yummy elixir to enjoy and enjoy for weeks to come.

**Again, this review was from a keg and not the bottle, which I thought couldnt get any better.**

Damn this is a good IPA. Had it at Hamilton's in San Diego as part of beer week...place was packed.

A - Fine hazy golden colour with just a hint of peach or amber.

S - Strong - even in a packed bar I knew this was gonna taste great. Lots of citrus and flower with a hint of grain coming thru.

T - Nice full bodied IPA with tons of hop character. More towards the bitter side of IPAs but its just what the doctor ordered.

M - Pretty good, nice and full with a good balance of carbonation and body.

D - High, I'd get this again for sure. Not sure how it'd be in a bottle but I bet its a dosey.

On tap at the Toronado. Poured into a pint glass. No abv info is given.

A-Pours orangish amber with a very minimal off white head. While the retention isn't the best, it does maintain a small filmy layer throughout. Leaves a little bit of lace.

S-It has a nice fresh, hoppy nose. Lots of citrus, pine, and some dank come through. Apparently it is dry hopped with Amarillo and Simcoe and these two varieities give it that great WC nose. This one deserves 4.25 for smell.

T-The citrus and pine come through quickly on the palate. There is a nice caramel malt backbone that kicks in as it goes down. It finishes with a nice level of pine bitterness. Pine is the predominant aftertaste.

M-Lighter end of the medium spectrum. It has good carbonation from being served on tap and finsihes dry.

D-Damn good WC IPA. Had no problem knocking this one back.

This was my first beer from this brewer and I have to say I was impressed. A few people sitting next to me also had this and remarked on how good of an IPA it is. I would love to see bottles available up here. These guys deserve some accolades for making yet another great WC IPA.

had this on tap at the brewery in kernville, ca...

took my raft guides advice and gave this a try even though i was not a fan of the IPA...i would like to say that this is the beer that turned me around on the IPA and now it seems like i can't get enough of them!

pours a nice golden color with a decent head...the majority of what i was tasting could only be described as grapefruit peel, which was great! it is very citrusy on the nose and taste...the girl at the bar did tell me that this is dry-hopped...

so in the end the name really says it all...just outstanding!

Undated bomber into pint glass at fridge temp.

Look: cloudy brownish-orange, very minimal head

Smell: muted honey, grapefruit, confectioner's sugar

Taste: again, muted. Honestly kind of hard to make out any one flavor. Some floral maybe, but mostly just sweetish and bitter. As it warms, more grapefruit, along with a bit of molasses. Still a lot of just straight-up bitter notes, of the sort I associate with a lot of Stone's offerings.

Feel: solid. Felt light to me at first, but really thickened as I went on, with nice carbonation.

Overall: an enjoyable beer, for sure. Not sure it deserved the cloak-and-dagger "back storeroom secret special" treatment it got by the guy at my local store, but good. It's been a while since I had Grapefruit Slam, so I can't be sure, but I think I'd have a hard time telling this one apart from that.

Consumed April 2nd, 2014 from an undated bottle. Poured into a standard pint glass.

Very clear light copper/brass color with a very creamy meringue-like yellow-white head two fingers tall. Plenty of sheeting/lacing as the fluid level went down.

Aroma is all hops: grassy and citrusy (lemons and grapefruit).

Flavor is hop forward, hop middle and hop backward. Massive bitterness hides almost everything else except for a barely-detectable crystal/caramel malt flavor, a touch of fresh grassiness and a ruby grapefruit note. Really, just about all hop flavor. Not much complexity to this.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and slightly dry. Prickly if held on the tongue for a few moments.

Liquid hops. If that's your thing, you should enjoy this beer. If you're looking for something else, keep looking.

Served from a bomber into an Alchemist becher. No date.

Appearance- Clear amber with two finger fluffy white head that left nice lacing.

Smell- Lots of tropical and citrus frutis. Tons of pineapple actually. Nice floral hops, but tropical fruits dominate.

Taste- Big pine and grassy hops. The tropical fruits are not really in taste, but its the earthy notes and pine note that are there. finish is pretty much grapefruit.

Mouthfeel- Medium-full carbonation with medium-full body. Nice bitterness and very light heat.

Overall- This beer is Just Great, but I don't know if it's Just Outstanding.

The aroma has fresh juicy sweet oranges, mangoes, peaches, along with a slight resinous pine in the back.

The beer has lots of floral in the front, along with some of that fruity character in the aroma, but not much. There’s a light bready malt in the middle with a medium mouthfeel, but not really much sweetness, which is just what I look for in an IPA.

The finish is aggressively bitter of floral and big green pine. This beer has heavy bitterness.

In the end, I’m unsure if this is an older bottle, but the lack of hop flavor and strong bitterness is not really what I look for. Still, there are good characteristics like the aroma and malt body.
