Clear amber color with a tall white, dense head. There's a considerable amout of retention and lacing.

The hops seem subdued in the smell. There's no mistaking it for an IPA, but the grainy malt really tones down the hops to a dull citrus smell.

The malt plays a pretty strong role in this. The hops are dominant, but there's a strong balance. Grapefruit, pineapple, and some light floral flavors exist.

Mouthfeel is clean and moderately dry. It's has low bitterness.

This was a pretty good IPA, but far from outstanding.

Poured from bottle into tulip glass.

A...pours a hazy amber color with a nice two finger head.

S...malty, yeasty and can actually smell some alcohol

T...a very robust yet balanced taste overall. There is alot of malt in here an d tons of hops. Really comes together nice. The bitterness of the hops is balanced out by semi sweet
fresh baked bread.

M...nice carbonation. A pretty full mouth feel. Nice body.

O...a really good ipa. Gives you all the hoppyness youre looking for but, keeps it balanced. Very pleasant beer. I wrk definitely buy again.

22 oz bottle (thanks Alex) into a tulip. I was afraid this bottle was going to explode as I rode a train with it all the way back home from Bakersfield, but it held up just fine!

appearance: A clean, warm amber color. Modest head that fades away gradually.

smell: Hops, but not overpowering. A little phenolic/resinous. Piney. Lots of malts, too.

taste: Citrusy, piney, with lots of malt balancing things out quite nicely. The bottle says it has a "large malt character and a huge hop profile". This is pretty accurate, and I think both come together perfectly in this beer. Other reviewers say refreshing, and I absolutely agree!

mouthfeel: Good carbonation, not much but certainly enough. Bitter on the palate but not too heavy.

finish: Citrusy bitterness, balanced out by the "large malt character".

overall: After a short train trip up to Bakersfield and back, this is the perfect way to end the weekend. Very refreshing, well balanced...this is now one of my favorite IPAs. I can't wait to try more Kern River Brewing Company beers!

22oz bomber into a tulip. Huge thanks to beachstrength49.

A- Pours a great-looking luminescent golden-orange with 2 fingers of pillowy white head that fades away pretty quickly, but leaves some of the nicest cobweb lacing I’ve seen in a long time. Beautiful looking brew. 4.5

S- Piney/grassy hop resin, bright citrusy orange juice character, good amount of malty backbone comes through with a touch of graininess. 4

T- Not as bitter/dank as the nose suggested with WAY more citrus notes present. Juicy orange and grapefruit slosh around with waves of pine/resin to make some kind of delicious hop-punch. Bready malts with just a hint of toast follow up on the end. Dee-licious. 4.

M- Incredibly light-bodied for how much flavor this packs. Reminiscent of Zombie Dust in its super-refreshing character. 4.5

O- Easily one of the better IPAs I’ve had. 4.5

Big ole' head on this, capping a rich hazy amber brew.

Good balanced smell, I can pick up the hops, but they don't dominate. Resinous with a light sweet backdrop

This is a very well balanced beer. It's not as underwhelming as some sweet/malty IPAs I've had, but the hops aren't as overbearing as many of their west coast counterparts. Well balanced, with almost a subtlety to it. The maltiness doesn't dilute, but compliments this citrusy hop presence. I've been excited to try this one since I picked it up, and do not feel disappointed.

Pours a hazy honey orange with a 2 inch foamy light tan head that settles to a small cap on top of the beer. A foamy latticework of lace coats the glass on the drink down but slowly dissipates over time. Smell is of citrus fruit, citrus zest, tropical fruit, and some herbal hop aromas. Taste is of citrus zest, grapefruit juice, tropical fruit, and some malt on the finish. There is a fairly mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a great beer that is tasty and super easy to drink with its awesome aromas and flavors.

22 oz bomber, no bottled-on date, poured into a tulip glass. Picked this up just 3 days after it arrived at the store, so it should be pretty fresh.

A- Slightly hazy golden color topped with an inch of fluffy white head, nice retention, leaves tons of thick, crusty lacing.

S- Grassy, fruity hops, grapefruit and pine resin, it smells nice but pretty standard. Not picking up much malt aroma at all.

T- More tropical fruit and pine, fruit flavors of grapefruit, orange and pineapple. The hops are moderately bitter, not as strong as I was expecting for a West-Coast IPA. Light caramel malts provide balance. Finish is bitter and grassy with a bit of peppery spiciness.

M- Medium-bodied, medium to low carbonation, smooth feel with a dry finish.

O- A solid IPA, it's very drinkable but the hop flavor isn't quite as bold or vivid as I would have liked.

650ml bottle.

It pours an amberish orange with a large off-white head that is pretty soapy and foamy.

The smell is interesting. Nice grassiness, passion fruit, almost soapy citrus. There is something about it though that is just a touch off.

The flavor is nice. A round flavor with low bitterness to start, some fruitiness, a bit of grassiness, the finish is a medium/low herbal bitter.

This is a good beer once you get into it. Not too flashy but rather solid.

I picked this up during a brief stop/detour through Bakersfield. Enjoyed the following week. Assuming it’s as fresh as can be.

I poured it into an imperial pint glass & thought it looked amazing—just this big billowy cap of soapy foam, dense & light, atop a ruddish orange/dark yellow tinted brew. Amazing appearance.

The aroma is dominated upfront by citrus hops that diminishes, revealing pineapple & mango, tropical fruit notes.
The flavor has a nice bittering that doesn’t overpower but makes itself known. Very flavorful, with a light orange & zest that shows hints of pineapple & some sweetness. Has a lot of tropical fruit notes with a pleasing bitterness.

Drinking this fresh and its wonderful. Priced right too, practically a steal.

Thanks Sean or this bottle

A 1 finger thick white head turns foamy with lots of big frothy bubbles forming. Head stays around for while and leaves ome nice lacing down the glass. Body is hazy orange with some signs of carbonation. Look very good.

S Sweet citrus like grapefruit and some tropical fruits like pineapple. A subtle bready malt in the nose as well bu mostly sweet hops.

T Subtle pine bitterness upfront followed by a wave of juicy sweetness. Nice session able IPA

M Lighter on the tongue with a medium carbonation, very easy to drink this stuff all day.

O Nice sweeter/fruit forward IPA. I wouldn't mind a little more bitterness, but a very solid IPA none the less

Poured from a 22 oz bottle into a Jester King pint.

A- pours a light caramel color with a 2" white head. Big clumps and spider web lacing remain on the glass.

S- very pungent citrus and floral notes. Banana, grapefruit and pineapple.

T- sweet caramel, lots of juicy citrus, pineapple, grapefruit, orange and finishes with a good amount of citrus rind bitterness.

M- medium body and carbonation. Creamy but has a slickness too it as well.

O- outstanding ipa ( pun intended). Would love to have access to this regularly!

Reviewed from notes. Poured from bomber into an Upland pint glass.

A: Not too much head but laces nicely. Darker copper with quite a bit of haze. Medium visible carbonation.

S: Aroma is very citrusy, some juniper, mild caramel notes to bready malt backbone.

T: Flavor is grapefruit-forward hops, with some resin, melon and floral notes and hints of pineapple. Aftertaste lingers with alpha bitterness and malt sweetness at back of tongue.

M: Medium body, high amount of carbonation, alcohol noticeable but not hot.

O: A very good IPA, one that I would buy again if it were around here. Does taste more like a DIPA than an American IPA, but retains good drinkability.

On-tap at Local Habit. This keg was brought back by the bartender after visiting Kern River a few weeks ago.

a- amber-gold ipa. good head, screams ipa.

s- inviting. olfactory not slammed by hops. reminds me of duet by alpine.

t- again, reminds me of duet. there are a couple of hops working together here, but it feels like they almost zero each other out. you get a bit of bite early, but by the end of the glass it had lost most of that zing. drink colder than warm.

m- fell a little flat on the tongue. a weightier ipa, with thick, slow flavors.

o- this is a beer in a minor key. not a bright, hoppy ipa, more of a cloudy, moody ipa. simcoe & amarillo, but just not as good as alpine's duet.

A - Pours a light amber-colored hue with a supple white head that doesn't stick around for long but coats the glass with nice hefty lacing.

S - The smell is a wonderful combination of citrus, wildflower honey, pine, and fresh mountain air. Lovely nose.

T - The taste follows the nose but is highlighted by the resinous, piny hop punch. Citrus and Pine are the mainstays for this beer.

M - Mouthfeel is very pleasant--medium viscosity and nice carbonation.

O - I've had this beer many times over but finally decided to do a quick tasting for BA. It changes ever so slightly at times but always lives up to its name. This beer is truly just outstanding. Definitely one of my favorite ipa's out there. And I love to support KRBC, as it is the best brewery within 1 1/2 hours of where I live.

A: Orangey amber in color with just the slightest haze. Forms an enormous, billowing off-white head. Excellent retention and copious amounts of lacing.

S: Aroma is somewhat ordinary: grainy malts with citrus and grapefruit hops.

T: Starts off with a light blend of grain and caramel malts and some gummy juicyfruit. Then citrus hops: grapefruit and orange. Some very mild pine. Lightly sweet. Mild bitterness.

M: On the lighter side of medium with lighter carbonation and a mild bitterness.

O: Certainly better than the average IPA, but far from outstanding. Surprisingly malty for a West Coast IPA, and while the hops are present, they're downplayed quite a bit. Minimal bitterness makes this one easily drinkable.

22 oz. bottle served in a Great Divide footed ale glass. Big thanks to SupoenaDeuces (Alex) for the hook up!

A: Pours a chilled amber color with golden straw hues around the edges. A thick and creamy pure white head forms on pour. It sits over one inch in height and very slowly recedes down the glass leaving huge sticky sheets of lace behind.

S: Leafy green hops, mild citrus rinds, some juicy mango and some sweet caramel malts.

T: Grassy hops with some light fruity undertones are up front. The mid-palate is more of a bitter pine that is layered on a mildly sweet malty body that carries on into the finish. Overall the hops are the most dominant.

M: Medium to light bodied with nice carbonation. Very refreshing.

O: It's very hop forward and the malt basically take a back seat, but it's still a really good beer. There is definitely a lot of flavor packed into this light and refreshing IPA.

Poured this one into a S.N. Hops glass. No date. 22 oz. brown bottle. The body was cloudy, but bright orange with a button mushroom colored head. The frothy, creamy head left thick lacing in the glass.

The smell was Citrus and pine shavings, big hops! Fresh grass. Later I sensed savory brown rice (in a good way), yum.

The taste was citrus and leafy, flavorful hops. Gentle bitterness but lots of flavor. Semi-drying finish. Very drinkable.

The mouthfeel was medium density with spot on carbonation. A solid beer all around.

Fresh bottles from March bottling. The beautiful amber orange appearance is simply just amazing to look at, one of the prettiest brews to linger over. The nose is fresh wet hops, pine, orange, and grapefruit. Fresh JO is simply delicious, a balancing act of super fresh citrus fruits, bitter hops, and perfect malting that is just a joy to drink. The mouth is another exercise in balance, clean, refreshing and crisp, it leaves the palette ready for another sip. KRBC is up there with Alpine in my book for continuous quality and cutting edge creativity. World class ales.

Thanks to johndoe8 for the bottle. Poured into a tulip.

Appearance. Hazy orange amber in color. Poured, perhaps too vigorously, to reveal 4 fingers of head, which slowly dissipates beautifully leaving quite a bit of sticky lacing.

Smell. Some grassyness joins a hint of medicinal aromas and a dominant mango aroma. Fresh and very light. The smell really opens up as the beer warms.

Taste. Starts out with a light lemongrass flavor which lingers for a nice long time. A fuller and more bitter grapefruit citrus flavor take over. Some malty sweetness accompanies these flavors to help balance the bitterness a bit, but this one remains hop forward all the way through. The medicinal notes picked up in the aroma starts to make itself present in the taste along with some minty herbs, giving a very light taste again. The finish is semi-dry with the lemongrass that was present earlier, along with some bitterness.

Mouthfeel. Pretty standard. Light body and moderate to high amount of carbonation, slightly prickly mouthfeel.

This amount of complexity, from my experience anyways, is not rivaled by any single ipa. Super fresh and super light.

Poured into a Spaten Tumbler. A dark and clear orange color. Millions of tiny carbonation bubbles lead to a huge four finger head that is just a hint off of bright white in color and creamy and rocky in appearance. When the head decides it's time to recede I will let you know how the lace looks. It finally does and leaves an amazing cotton candy type effect on the glass.

Smell is a wonderful citrus and fresh blossom onslaught. Orange and pink grapefruit. Some pineapple and mango sweetness is there as well. Just Outstanding does retain just a bit of malt sweetness too to keep it somewhat balanced.

Taste is a bit spicy first and then the citrus tastes come on. Blood orange and overripe pink grapefruit come to mind. Some mild pineapple orange taste shines thru next. All with an impressive malt bill that would make anyone from the East Coast say "hmm?".

Mouth is on the crisp side but very smooth. Carbonation is round to spritzy and the body is medium balanced. Finish is average to long and on the dry side with a bit of alcohol burn.

Overall I really enjoyed this California delight. I have had quite of few bottles of this before now and have enjoyed all of them. Thanks to oya1time for all of these bottles.

A - Pours a slightly hazy deep golden-orange with a finger of frothy white head atop. Head fades down at a normal pace leaving behind some thick lacing.

S - Aroma is full of lots of citrus and floral hops. There is also some pine and sweet caramel malts as well.

T - Starts off with some citrus hops with lots of grapefruit and some floral flavors with some sweet caramel malt to balance. Through the middle, more tropical hop flavors and a touch of pine come through with some bitterness. The finish is a mix of grapefruit and pine hops with some bitterness and sweet malts.

M - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Smooth with a dry and mildly bitter finish.

D - Very drinkable. Really nicely balanced IPA with a really nice hop profile and just the right amount of sweet malts to keep everything in check.

A very murky orange gold fills the glass capped by a big almost white head which gives the gift of plenty of lacing.

The aroma of grapefruit and pineapple assault the nose and follows up with a hint of pine and sweet malt.

The flavor is similar to the smell, citrusy and pithy. The malt is barely detectable at the end of middle. A bitter hope taste finishes the taste.

A smooth beer, with a hoppy bite up front. The medium light body is slightly resinous, yet has a nice easy finish.

I like the beer a lot. Great flavor and experience, yet maybe the name isn't quite what they meant. Perhaps it should be, Just Barely Outstanding, as it's not over the top or super special. A great solid beer.

Poured from a 22-oz. bomber into a pint glass. Color was light caramel. Lots of head, probably three finger widths. Cloudy white lacing on the top. Lots of film on the sides, circular and cloudy.

Smelled bitter hops right away. Got some lemon and grapefruit, but the bitterness sill came in hard. Toward the end of the sniffs I got some sweet floral notes.

Tasted pretty similar to the nose - a bit unbalanced and more bitter than anything else. Citrus hops, but not as strong as the nose. Probably grapefruit more than anything else. Some spices, too. Maybe pepper?

Medium body. Creamy texture. Average carbonation. Bitter finish.

I don’t know if outstanding is the right term for this beer. Ordinary would have worked better. Just an OK IPA.

22oz bottle pours a honey amber w/ a frothy off-white head, nice sticky lacing.

Aroma is strong pine up front, grapefruit, mango - tropical, dank hoppy goodness.

Taste is pale bready malt, a sharp bite of hop bitterness to the tip of the tongue, citrus and pine. Sticky and resinous, a little reminiscent of Pliny. Mouthfeel is smooth and clean.

Overall a world-class, balanced, very drinkable IPA.
