Received a 22oz bomber in a trade. Thanks RichBeer!

Pours a cloudy amber with a massive 2 finger white head. Aroma is really great. Tons of citrus (orange peel, tangerine, grapefruit) present with some piney notes as well. In tasting I was really pleased with how balanced this beer comes across. It's definitely a blast of hops but not to the point of being mouth puckering. The malt is there to provide some nice sweet counterpoint to all that hop goodness. I've got to note that the lace on the glass was impressive throughout as well. What really stood out to me with this beer though was how great the mouthfeel was for a strong IPA. This beer was extemely smooth and went down very easily. Great beer overall, definitely one I wish I had easy access to.

Had this on 2011-03-25 in Redondo Beach, CA

A - Almost clear golden straw with a 2- finger white head and great lacing.

S - Bold tropical fruit and citrus you can easily smell at a distance. Very inviting.

T - Biscuit, floral, citrus, pine, grapefruit zest. The not-too-sweet fruity malt taste gives way to pretty big bitterness. Citrus taste isn't as bright as I expected from the smell, with the malt a little more forward. Nevertheless, a good tasting brew.

M - Medium body and carbonation. Very smooth and silky. Not prickly but a bit oily.

O - I've been very curious to try a Kern River beer and am glad to have the chance while visiting LA. It isn't widely distributed at all, but wouldn't you know, the local Whole Foods had it on display. Almost missed it. I like it quite a bit and would certainly put this in my regular IPA rotation were it available in PA. Makes me really want to try their Citra DIPA. It's seasonal and on-tap at the brewery but it's a 3.5 hour drive so I'll "make do" with this tasty brew.

Poured from a bomber into a pint glass
Dating - none. batch # perhaps

A: Pours a clear straw-pale color with a nice thick lacey foam head.

S: Smells incredible. Bursting with citrus - orange/tangerine aromas and hints of sweet peach/mango.

T: Much like the aroma - get blasts of citrus hop flavors upfront with considerable bitterness on the palate. Finishes slightly sweet but nice light and dry. You realy have to search for the alcohol in this one.

M: Pretty smooth. Slightly sweet and finishes dry.

D: Superb. A really nice IPA - slightly sweet and super hoppy.

Just Outstanding! Now I have had this brew before on tap after a few other hop bombs and did not think much of it at the time. Now sitting down to review a fresh bomber I am quite pleased. A very drinkable, super hoppy IPA which I love.

Best extras ever provided by DearthVader, 22oz bomber poured into my new Bruery tulip, thanks again Brian!
Pours a spectacular cloudy light amber color, and a 1 and a half finger head, a creamy foam with large bubbles and a small amount of head remaining throughout. Foam lacing with large bubbles that hold on for a brief time, lacing is truly beautiful towards the end of the beer. Hints of pine and hop resin in the nose with a lovely orange citrus hops, faint hints of cake as well. The taste is phenomenal, truly multifaceted. The simcoe and Amarillo hops impart an excellent pine flavor with the resinous hops adding yet another dimension. The citrus flavors are there in small quantities, but the stars are the pine notes of the Simcoe and Amarillo. Balance is the key to the great taste of this beer with the light and dark malts provide a tasty malt profile unlike any I have ever tasted. Light mouthfeel that goes down smooth, low on the carbonation end and a perfect bitterness. Drinkabilty is high mainly due to the flavor of this great beer. Overall this is yet another beer that I may never get again but will be anxiously awaiting the time I can enjoy it once more. There is little criticism to be offered here only that I might like a bit more citrus but as the bottle states the name says it all.

On tap at my local tavern. Into a 20oz. mug.

The beer arrives with a two finger head of pure white foam floating atop the beautiful orange, amber colored goodness that is Kern's Just Outstanding IPA. The nose is citrus and biscuity malt with a bit of pine. Taste is huge grapefruit, and tangerine backed by a light, sweet, malt backbone and some piney bitterness. The finish is lush and juicy with a wonderful bitter aftertaste. The beer is medium bodied with a level of carbonation which imparts a creamy texture and great quaffability. Overall this is the epitome of a perfectly balanced west coast IPA. Citrus, pine, light malt presence, great bitterness, what more could you ask for? Kern hits it out of the park with this one. Highly recommended!

I had this on draft at my favorite little bar, "Instant Replay" in Canoga Park, California.

Poured from the tap into a standard pint glass.

The beer pours a hazy amber yellow, with an orange hue. About a two inch white colored head rose, and slowly settle down to about a three quarter inch head with layers of nice lacing on the glass.

The beer smells of grapefruit, citrus, floral hops, and pine. Not too much malt.

The taste has an initial bitterness on the first draw, but is quickly followed with nice notes of grassy hops, pineapple, a touch of sweetness in the middle and towards the end, and then another hop crispness punch on the finish.

Mouth feel is medium, crisp, and smooth.

Overall, this beer is a "just outstanding IPA". Since it makes a nice made up story, I'm going to guess were the first words uttered when the brewer tasted it for the first time, and thus the name. Could easily have more than one in a sitting.

On Tap at The Factory Gastrobar in Long Beach, CA.

A-Very interesting orange-hued ale, with decent lacing.

S-Nice green nose.

T-Expect a little more from that great bouquet, but still a very nice hop profile.

M--Very nice on the palate. Body from the malt structure is there, just no malty flavor.

D-Palate coating hop oils leave a giant green aftertaste, which wouldn't be ideal if it didn't taste so good.

I really look forward to seeing KRBC continue to emerge.

3/4/11 - poured from 22oz bottle into a Stone IPA glass.

A: Pours burnt orange with soapy 1 finger head and good lacing.

S: Smell is great, definitely the best aspect of the beer. Grapefruit and pine, a nice west coast style hop profile on the nose. Simcoe dry hopping is evident.

T: Taste is a bit disappointing after the great scent. Moderate hop bitterness up front with just a touch of sweetness on the back end. Starts and finishes dry. Extremely strong grapefruit aftertaste. More bitter than average for an American IPA.

M: Thin to medium body, standard for the style. A bit too much stinging from the bitterness and extremely dry. A bit soapy at times.

D: For an AIPA it's extremely dry, I'm not sure I will seek out this beer in the future.

bomber with no date poured into a pint glass

Pours a deep yellow to orange color with a nice fluffy pillowy beige head with amazing retention. Smells of pines, grass, sweet fruits, and of course hops. Taste is wonderful. Lots of citrus and floral notes with a full flavored hop backbone. Mouthfeel is medium to thin bodied with good carbonation. The great taste and low abv of this makes it extremely drinkable. Not just a clever name for this outstanding IPA from a new brewery for me. Now need to get my hands on the Citra.

Thanks to Solomon420 for the bottle!

Poured into a Heady Topper pint glass. Slightly hazy, malty-orange body, with a thin white head on top. The head still does a good job of leaving some sticky lacing behind.

Raw, grassy, hops with a pinch of citrus on the nose. Sweet malts and a touch of grapefruit. Well rounded.

Orange wedge with a side of grassy hop bitterness washes across the tongue. The Simcoe hops add a nice level of sticky dryness to the beer that comes out mostly on the finish. Somewhat malty up front, but thins out with hop bitterness on the finish.

Mouthfeel is smooth, yet resiny with a substantial body that manages not to be too heavy. Great hop bitterness on the finish for a single IPA.

Drinkability is good. This is a solid IPA and puts the majority mass produced IPAs to shame. Kern River has done a great job of creating a sturdy malt base, but still focusing heavily on the hops. Not a mind blowing beer, but definitely quality.

Poured into a fluted pint glass, revealing hazy rich amber body with orange hues and a slight finger of thickish head which dissipates quickly to reveal a little lacing. Smells sweet and citrusy with a good caramel presence from the malts and a little lemon rind from the hops. Good solid smells.

Tastes smooth, meaty and malty with a rich level bitterness throughout of citrus character. Nice solid flavors. Delicious mealy, nutty malt backbone. Mouthfeel is creamy and medium-bodied with fine carbonation adding a little tickle and some well-sustained volume. Very drinkable. Drinks like a meal.

Overall I am very happy with this brew. It pretty much lives up to its namesake.

Enjoyed a pint at O'Brien's Pub earlier today for maybe around $5.00.

Beer was served orange with a nice solid white head that left lacing behind as i sipped.

Nose was very pungent floral hops that did not fade.

Taste was tropical, orange and a hint of mango, with a solid caramel/pale malt base that was fairly balanced for the style. Some pine in the background but not resinous.

Mouthfeel was very smooth, perhaps due to mild carbonation.

Drinkability was quite good. This was a very good representation of the west coast ipa style. I may have to go back to Whole Foods to bring a bottle back to Arizona!

Thanks to MrTopher for this little extra; I really appreciate how you made sure I got this one in its freshest state! You really do know my style, man! Poured from a bomber into a tulip.

A: Cloudy orange/peach color. Thick white head (2-fingers) that retains for a long time, eventually thinning down but leaving excellent thick lacing.

N: Ruby red grapefruit and piny resin.

T/M: Creamy body with sweet malty-ness that melds well with sweet citric hops. Smooth, crisp, and very drinkable. A wonderful surprise! As the name implies, this is just one outstanding IPA!

Nice slightly hazy golden color with a rather large layer of foamy white head that leave massive amounts of sticky lacing all around the glass.

Picking up a little somehay/hops/grains on the nose. The flavor is bitter but not overpowering. A bit of citrus on the finish.

Mouthfeel is right where it should be and this is a very drinkable beer.

There are other IPAs I've enjoyed more, but I'd have no problem recommending this to anyone.

My dad just shot me a bottle and man do I have to say I am impressed with what Kern River is doing. I went into this one with no expectations and was pleasantly surprised.

Poured a cloudy bright copper hue with a two finger high eggshell colored head that had some nice hang time. very clingy lacing left on the glass the whole way down. This was a very nice looking brew in my Duvel tulip.

Aromas just blew me away. All the hop scents are there. Nice fruity pineapple aromas, piney and grassy tones, with some floral notes mixed in. Almost perfect and very enticing.

Taste is an extremely smooth crisp dry IPA. Hops are the dominate flavor but they don't overpower and attack the taste buds. Very clean piney bitter notes up front, with a citrusy finish.

Very smooth on the palate. Medium bodied and creamy. I have found a new favorite go to IPA.

Purchased at Holiday Wine Cellar in Escondido, CA a little over a month ago. The cashier claimed that it had just come in a few days before. To my knowledge, this bottle has been kept refrigerated for it's entire life.

Poured into a New Belgium globe.

Appearance: Standard pour netted a good three fingers of dense, rich, eggshell-colored foam. Body is crystal clear, orange-copper in color, and displays a gentle column of carbonation rising within. Excellent head retention - it just won't die down! - and thick, bubble bath-like lace complete the look. Looks outstanding!

Smell: Grapefruit, pine resin, caramel, earth, and toasted grain notes. Sweetness picks up a bit as it warms. Well done, but pretty straightforward; no surprises here.

Taste: Earth and pine come forth first, followed closely by pineapple, salt, and lemongrass. Grapefruit emerges in the finish, paving the way for a long-lasting bittersweet aftertaste. As you can probably guess, this is a hop-forward IPA. However, the malt bill still hangs in there, providing a solid base of toasted bread crust and (lighter) caramel. All of the flavors meld together very well. Where was this in the nose?!

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied and well balanced. Fine, yet active, carbonation creates a velvety sensation on the palate - I dig that. Finishes bitter, but not nearly as dry as most west coast IPAs - I really like where it's at in terms of FG. Hop resins cling to the palate deep into the aftertaste. Once again, outstanding!

Drinkability: Other than the nose, this Just Outstanding was, indeed, outstanding! I wish I wouldn't have sat on it so long before drinking it. I'm sure a fresher version has an excellent aroma. This is a fantastic IPA through and through. Kudos to Kern River! I'm stoked that I can now get your stuff in San Luis Obispo.

On tap at Tony's Darts Away in Burbank, CA.

Man oh man, do i love this beer. I would drink this with a spicy sausage covered in peppers and onions at Tony's and it was just about as close to beer pairing heaven as it gets. Something about pairing an IPA with that spicy sausage and pepper combo that just makes sense. It almost nullifies the heat and lets the flavors emerge better in both. Love this beer's heavy pine nose and taste along with its more citrusy side. I would drink this all the time if it was possible, the most drinkable IPA i have had although Hangar 24 comes close.

Bottle thanks to jmadrigal2. Poured from 22oz bottle into a tulip glass.

Appearance: Pours a slightly hazy golden orange with a two finger fluffy white head.

Smell: Bright grapefruit and tangerine aromas, bitter piney hops anad a malty character at the end.

Taste: Bitter piney hops, grapefruit, lemon zest mixed with a pretty nice malt taste that doesn't take away from the hops.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied and it has a dry aftertaste.

Drinkability: I have had this beer a couple of times now and it is a very good IPA, that I wish made its way out to PA without trading.

Poured from a bottle gotten via trade from dabecassis. Thanks David, nice and fresh.

A: A medium golden orange color with a nice one finger sticky white head. Lacing is full and sticky.

S: Hops throw off a bunch of smells that include pine, grass, flowers and citric notes. They get coupled with the caramel sweet that lies underneath.

T: Nice hoppy west coast beer here. Up front I get the sweeter citrus flavors that get taken over by the pine and floral notes, with the floral notes winning out. Some grassy notes mix in with the caramel sweetness to allow some bitterness at the end but not overly so. Very complex and nice. Finish is creamy.

M: Medium mouthfeel. I would have liked this one a bit more bitter. Creamy for sure with very little if any alcohol notes.

D: Very high, this is a nice drinking IPA.

Overall a quality west coast IPA that just falls short of the best from that state. I would gladly drink this anytime or anywhere and still wish we could get it here in PA. A very solid beer, I enjoyed it greatly.

22oz bottle poured into nonic

A - Pours a hazy golden yellow with very white, one finger head.

S - Decent hop aromatics. Some citrus, but leaning more on the grassy piney side of the spectrum, leading me to believe a drier finish and mouthfeel

T - Grassy bitterness, minor orange and tangerine. Faint malty backbone.

M/D - As guess, dry and a tad thin. Not bad though, makes for pretty easy drinking. I could have a few of these no problem.

A - a golden hazy brown with an offwhite head. alcohol lacing on the glass shows a medium alcohol content

S - smell is typical of an IPA. A very Pine filled scent at the tip of the nose shows for a generous amount of hops. fruit notes consist of raisins, pear, CITRUS.

T - Grassy, Fresh, Piney, Slightly bitter HOPS. not too much, but definitely not too little. its buttery smooth after burner helps it go down smoother than any other IPA out there.

M - medium carbonation, not too heavy on the alcohol feel.

D - because the taste is so outstanding i can drink this all day.
