Reviewing the Just Outstanding IPA from Kern River Brewing Company.
Score: 92

No freshness date on the bottle or label. Received in a trade earlier this month with California-based BeerAdvocate user LieutenantSour.

Appearance: Pours a translucent reddish-orange color with two full fingers of foamy cream colored head that slowly settles into a thin layer atop the glass. Sticky, frothy lacing. 4.5/5

Smell: Strong aromas of pine and floral, tropical citrus. Pineapple, mango, grapefruit and mango. Some "sticky," sap-and-pollen earthiness present too. Noticeable maltiness. 4.5/5

Taste: Flavor is more malty than the aroma. The beer has a slightly sweet, malty caramel backbone. A sharply bitter citrus flavor gradually grows from the midpalate to the finish. Lingering notes of sap, pine, pineapple and tangerine in the finish. 4/5

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, medium carbonation. Mouthfeel is creamy and juicy. Finish is bitter and malty. 4/5

Overall: A simply solid single IPA. I may have sat on this one too long -- I waited 20 days between receipt and consumption -- but still enjoyed it thoroughly. Would love to try this fresh off tap.

Recommendation: Seek this one out unless you hate hops.

Pairings: Mexican food.

Cost: $7.99 for a 22 oz (bomber) bottle. (1,270 characters)

I first had this beer at the brewery in a flight, and have been craving it ever sense. So i couldn't pass up this bottle when i found it.

Very clear golden almost straw like in color. nice 1 finger white frothy head with good retention, leaving spotty lacing around the glass.

very nice hoppy aroma. tropical fruits (mango and pineapples stand out) some floral notes and citrus

taste follows the nose. fruity mangos, pineapple citrus with a mildly malty backbone. So easy to drink

light bodied medium carbonation. leaves the mouth watery.

Lots of lace and a foamy white head on top of a clear, dark gold beer. Looks great.

Aroma dominated by grapefruit, very little in the way of maltiness or sweetness. A touch of piney aroma as well.

Big citrus, grapefruit/tangerine blast with a nice bitterness behind it that lingers into the finish. Very restrained malt character. Just a touch of sweetness; bitterness doesn’t overwhelm the citric hop flavor at all. It’s there and it’s aggressive but extremely well integrated. Just delicious!

Medium body, very smooth and a little creamy, carbonation just a smidge on the low side of medium. Hard not to drink this one fast, it’s so damned good.

Prototypical west coast IPA, all about the super vivid and fresh-tasting hops. As well done as any I’ve had, including Pliny the Elder and Blind Pig. Deserving of wider recognition to be sure. (855 characters)

Thanks to aufaber for this one!

Poured from bomber into a CBS snifter.

A. Wonderfull orange red hue with a 4mm thick head, resides to some nice foamy bubbles.

S. Smells of fine citrus, some sweet pine and wonderful orange peel

T. Tastes of sweet and tart citrus, strong of pine and lots of floral.

M. Medium body, with a coarse and dry finish

O. A good overall beer. Lots of citrus and tangy hops, and a bit sweet. I like this beer. I could see buying this for $7/bomber at the store and keeping a fair amount on hand. A good beer that could be drank anytime. (565 characters)

orange with an off-white head that holds very very well and leaves tons of splotchy lace. actually looks darker orange than it is because the head (which never goes away) is so thick, it casts a shadow. nose is perfumy flowers and citrus in near perfect harmony on top of some tropical fruit, toast and sweet malt. hops obviously play the lead role. taste is grapefruit up front. the malt amplifies and harmonizes like it should, and bitter pine comes through in the finish. creamy, medium-full body. alcohol is virtually unnoticeable. pleasant bitterness and no aftertaste. overall, a fantastic example of cali ipa. glad to see they are bottling/catching on. cali continues to dominate. (687 characters)

A: Pours clear golden orange with an impressive frothy white head. Good lacing.

S: Lots of orange and mango on the nose, very smooth citrus is busting out of this one. Some toffee malts aroma are detectable behind all the fruit. Exotic citrus in their too, starfruit or something along those lines. Great aroma.

T: Orange and apricot is hits right up front. Some lighter piney notes in there as well. Not a "bitter" IPA, but busting with juicy hops. Nice light malty backbone as well.

M: Medium body and a resinous mouthfeel. There is a nice oiliness from the hops.

O: Really nice IPA, my idea of citrusy profile with great balance. (639 characters)

650mL bottle into a Bruery snifter.

A- Pours a hazy orange with about a 1 finger off white head. Fantastic volume, lacing and retention.

S- Glorious hops! Citrus and floral hops, piney hop resins, orange, mango, and just the right amount of malt sweetness.

T- Follows the nose. Bursting with citrus, floral, and piney hops, with a great malt backbone to round out the flavors perfectly. Nice mango orange flavors al well.

M- Perfect carbonation and just a decent amount hop bitterness. Finishes bright and longing for more.

O- A fantastic IPA that I wish I could get ahold of more often. (640 characters)

Poured from the bottle into a standard pint glass. This was opened during a New Years Eve tasting.

Appearance: Pours a clear amber with a finger of fluffy off white carbonation that fades to a layer on top of the pour and leaves some lacing.

Smell: Citrus hops dominate. There is some bready malt to back up the hops, but the hops really star here.

Taste: Really bitter and hoppy up front. Toasty malt shows up a bit into the sip. The bitterness takes over again and dominates through the finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with really smooth carbonation and a slick finish.

Overall: At first I wanted more to back up the bitterness. This beer seemed to improve as it warmed up. I would definitely have another given the chance. (729 characters)

Appearance: Pours a slightly hazy, golden honey color. Gorgeous warm-looking color on this beer. About 1" of off-white head forms, that has good retention and limited lacing.

Smell: Caramel malt, lots of florals, citrus, grapefruit, and dankness. Nice, fresh hop scents in this. Nothing over the top, but still very good.

Taste: Good malt backbone. Hop character is very floral, along with some citrus, and general dankness. Maybe a bit of pine at the tail end.

Mouthfeel/Overall: Light bodied with very fine carbonation. As it warms it becomes more and more creamy on the palate. Good here. Overall, an excellent IPA. Again, nothing over the top, but very solid all around and something I'd love to have again. (715 characters)

A- Cloudy golden orange with a very nice looking head that recedes slowly and leaves soapy bubbles. Looks a lot like pliny.

S- Lots of citrus! Grapefruit, lemons, oranges, tropical fruit, pineapple, grassiness

T- Orange marmalade, grapefruit, tropical fruit, some funkiness I can't put my finger on and a crisp, medium bitter finish. Very little pine.

M- Not very resinous. Very light, great level of carbonation, near perfect. Drinks very easily.

O- Very, very good. This would surely be a regular beer for me if it was easily available. My first beer from Kern River and I enjoyed it very much. (601 characters)

Thanks to soughtbyGod for this one.
Poured into a Mother Earth snifter
copper color with at least a 3 finger head with lacing for days.
Smell was piney for me, typical West Coast offering.
Taste was an improvement from the nose. Hops are in your face but never get out of hand. Slight malt backbone calms the hops down. Mouthfeel is a nice balance, not chewy, not too thin, very nice.
Overall this is a very nice IPA! I would recommend it! (439 characters)

22oz bomber, awesome extra from SalukiAlum--a big thanks!
Clear, honey-orange elixir poured into DFH glass. Huge white head, compact bubbles, copious Belgian lacing.
The aroma is all hoppy citrus: mango, orange grapefruit with a hint of pine. Heavenly for this hophead.
The taste does not disappoint. Smooth hops through and through, grapefruit and pine predominate. No malt--excellent.
Well carbonated but not over the top. Medium body. Delicious.
Another standout for hopheads by Kern River. (493 characters)

This is my first Kern River beer ever, and it was sent to me by Cocoapuph. Cheers to you my friend!

A: Poured a clear, golden color, with ever the slightest amber hue. Wow, the suds posing as a 2 finger + head was ridiculous!

S: Extremely floral and hoppy, with the amarillo and simcoe being most evident. I got a mild pomegranate character in there as well, but maybe that's just my imagination.

T: The back end of this thing reminder me of Nugget Nectar in spades (although I know that no nugget was used here). West Coast hop bomb for sure, but the bitterness was tempered by a glorious fruit component.

M: The bitterness didn't linger, and there was just enough sweetness to balance the hops out somewhat. However, balance is not in the West Coast brewers' rep ...and shouldn't be. The lacing was car wash stuff!

O: It didn't quite have the dimension of Sculpin (my favorite), but it was damn close. Kern River is off to a good start with me! (951 characters)

Bottle (2011)

Thanks for the gift, NoSignsOfPain!

Slightly hazy golden orange and amber with a thick, pillowy, persistent off-white head. Lines and sheets of lace are left down the glass.

A well balanced, though strong and pungent aroma consisting of lots of citrus, mild pine, and a bit of caramel sweetness. Complete, strong, and well rounded.

Moderately bitter, with lots of pungent citrus and tropical flavors, balanced nicely by a caramel and bready backbone. Complete, drinkable, and delicious.

Medium mouthfeel with ample carbonation.

A delightful IPA. Just outstanding. (583 characters)

Dry hopped with Simcoe and Amarillo hops.

Purchased on day it was delivered to Hacienda Bev. (Brea) on 10-Jun-14.
Poured into Bottle Logic can glass on 11-Jun-14.

Also tasted on 18-Nov-11, 20-Jul-12, 29-Sep-13.

Very piney aroma dominate over the citrus hops, but still present. Nice nectar-y finish. Good refreshing body that's got a medium malt feel.

Overall, a fantastic IPA that's very reasonably priced. I rank this in the same tier of IPA's as Jai Alai, Head Hunter, Columbus IPA, and Flower Power. (507 characters)

Poured from 22 oz. bottle into pint glass

Appearance is a dark orange color that has very good clarity, and a nice visual carbonation to it. It poured with a 1/4 inch of off-white head, which recedes into a small layer that lays atop the brew the whole way down. Nice retention and great looking, sticky lace down the glass. I'm getting a really nice tropical peach aroma off of this one, but also smells of a malty sweetness. Taste is also peach-forward, with a malty back end. There is a slight hop bitterness to it, but not as much as I prefer. The only thing missing is the sharp hop bite, but that's just me. Mouthfeel is light-bodied, and mildly carbonated. This is a really solid offering, something that I would pick up whenever I see it. (747 characters)

Bomber poured into a tulip.

A: Pours a hazy golden amber color with orange hues. There is a sizable mountain style white head that forms peaks and valleys. The retention is really impressive and the head leaves behind chunks of sticky lacing on the glass.

S: The nose reveals some intense citrusy hops; grapefruit, oranges, and some pine cones hiding in the background. The malt is not lost in the shuffle as the aromas of toasted grain and honey waft from the glass.

T: The hops dominate the front side of the beer with the citrus flavors shining through. Mid palate the hops shift gears and some notes of pine come through with a bit of bubble gum as well. It finishes dry and mildly bitter with a hint of the toasted grain. Really clean finish.

M: The feel of this brew is really lush for an IPA. It is medium bodied with just the right amount of carbonation.

O: The hops are forward, not over powering, and the finish is superb. I would drink this one regularly at 6.8% if I had access to it! (1,002 characters)

Pours a very pretty golden orange, with a finger and half of bubbly white head, that leaves significant cling. The scent is hoppy, floral hops and piney, a thick scent that finishes with some sweetness. The flavor has a great balance. It's definite hop flavor, but with a malty sweetness. It is very full across the mouth. Very drinkable. This IPA stands up along side any other west coast IPA. (394 characters)

A: I love the color of this one, great golden with a good head

S: I didn't get much of an aroma from this beer but what i did get I enjoyed.

T: Really smooth for such a hoppy beer, I can see the hype on this one for sure.

M: Good carbonation and so easy to drink, I put down a bomber of this one before I even realized it.

O: I really enjoyed this beer. It was easy to drink and quite tasty. One I'd return to for sure (463 characters)

Cheers to soughtbygod for sending this my way

Consumed 11/3/11

Appearance: A mostly clear but slightly hazy deep orange color - starts off with a large, fluffy, foamy white head - great retention, and it leaves tons of lacing - sticky, wispy, pretty looking

Smell: Great - complex hops - floral, some pine, tons of citrus - mostly orange and grapefruit flesh, but there are definitely some tropical aromas in here, too - a bready malt backbone, hints of caramel

Taste: Yeah, it's outstanding - surprisingly, not a hop bomb - moderately bitter, with a light sweetness - some oily pine, and a lot of citrus - orange and grapefruit flesh, some pith that builds over time, some rind - the malts do actually provide a background, mostly pale, but some caramel malts - a little earthy, grassy - balance is impressive for a west coast IPA

Mouthfeel: Medium body, nice carbonation, smooth

Overall: All-around solid

This is a great IPA. It's not extreme, it's not ridiculous, it's just very flavorful and well-rounded. I could drink a lot of this. (1,045 characters)

22oz. bottle poured into a tulip. Thanks to Chris for sharing!

(A)- Pours an orange amber color. Produced a giant fluffy white head with great retention and lace.

(S)- Big juicy citrus with a piney caramel middle. Giant bits of grapefruits. A good hop profile.

(T)- Lots of caramel malt. . lots. Plenty of pine and a mild dry citrus.

(M)- A good carbonation level. A decent balance too. A little underwhelming based on the smell.

(D)- Not bad. Not as good as how it looked and smelled, but still enjoyable. (511 characters)

Thanks to comfortablynumb1 for the bottle.

Appearance: Straight gold. Head is bright-white, chunky, and sticky. Super sticky. Lacing is in sheets. Nice thin cap on the beer throughout. Very pretty to look at, but lacks some of the deeper copper tones I've come to expect from the style. The lacing on this is truly amazing.

Smell: Big floral hop aroma. Citrus on the back. I'm getting some tropical smells in there too. Mostly mango. Big biscuity malt presence with some sweetness coming in through the back. Lovely, complex hops. Nicely balanced. Has that cotton candy smell I've come to associate with Citra hops. Powdery malts, oily hops, and all around nicely balanced.

Taste: Is it possibly that floral got bigger than the nose? Yup. Sweet and piney. Love the combo going on here. Nice cotton candy finish on a dank sip. Citrus kicks in after a few sips and pushes pith and oily rind. The malts keep in step, offering a solid counterpoint of biscuit dough and caramel sweetness. Peppery and earthy on the back. Loads of pithy bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Nice and smooth. Moderate body. Carbonation is spot on. Very solid overall. Lacks a little body, but not much.

Overall: They really know how to make these things on the west coast. Loads of hop flavor and a nice malt to back it up. Loads of depth and character. (1,320 characters)

Poured 22oz into pint glass.

A- pours dark Orange, hazy color. Fluffy white head, leaves lots of lacing on the glass.

S- lots of hop aroma. Pine hops come through first, followed by citrus grapefruit. Some subtle sweet malt hints in the back.

T- like the nose lots of hop flavor throughout. Citrus hop flavor comes more prominent though. Some grapefruit mixed with some pine in the middle. Caramel malty at the end hold up the hops nicely. Bitterness becomes stronger toward the end, but not overly bitter.

M- medium body, good carbonation. Oily feel in the mouth.

O- great ipa! Would love to be able to drink this anytime. Good amount of hop flavor, but doesn't go over the top. Very much enjoyed this beer! (713 characters)

Notes from a month ago. 22oz bottle shared by Drazzamatazz

A: Dark burnt orange, super cloudy (was not exactly expecting this). Massive 3 finger fluffy head from the pour. Big, thick lacing

S: Lots of grapefruit and pine. Starts with juicy, citrus fruit and finishes with piney/earthy hop notes. Occasional light caramel. As this warmed, notes of pineapple juice emerged

T: Citrus hops goodness with a small amount of pine. Mostly grapefruit, but some pineapple comes through as well. Sweetness in the form of caramel and some bread crust in the finish. Superbly balanced

M: Medium bodied. Slightly bitter. Clean finish

D: I loved this beer. An amazing IPA. Insanely drinkable. Would take this over Citra any day (717 characters)
