I had the opportunity to try this beer at GABF, and much to my dismay, was extremely underwhelmed. This couldn't have been the Citra that everybody has been raving about.. so I decided to chalk it up to a botched batch, server error, oxidation... whatever. A few months later I was able to track down a fresh bottle from my local shop.
Appearance was solid. Standard color with an exceptional, white, lacey head. Smell was hands down the best combination of hop aroma I've experienced in a beer to date. Huge amounts of grapefruit, citrus, pine and resin. Taste followed suit from start to finish. Bitterness was perfectly balanced by an appropriate malt backbone. Finished slightly sweet and dry.
All hype aside, this is arguably the best IPA I've had thus far. Beautifully balanced and free of flaws from beginning to end. Thoroughly looking forward to trying in the future.
For those of you who have yet to try this beer, add it to your wants. A fresh bottle is well worth the trade IMHO.
