4.5/5  rDev -1.7%

0.3L serving at Gourmet Haus Staudt's Kern River Brewing night as part of SF Beer Week

A: A hazy, shrouded, glowing golden-orange color. There was a light coating of head initially (though the beer may have been sitting for a minute before I grabbed it), but a paper thin coating stayed atop my glass for the whole time, with big bubbles sporadically appearing on the edges; great lacing too.

S: Immediate rush of grapefruit, accompanied by many other citrus flavors– orange, tangerine, pineapple were some that I noticed. A bit of dank resin and floral hops show up, and there is a touch of light, bready, sweet malts. I was trying hard to nitpick with this beer and almost gave smell a 4, but there was no way to justify anything less than a 4.5/5 on my glass.

T: Really solid bitter grapefruit dominates the taste initially, as it did with smell. The flavor then evolves from lightly sweet at the beginning to piny to herbal/floral/resiny, with the citrus flavors present in the smell making an appearance at every turn. The finish is amazing; there's substantial bite from the hop bitterness but the sweet citrus flavors come out in strength. Incredibly strong taste at all points too; this is an excellent beer to just take your time with and enjoy the flavor.

M: Smooth and creamy, very well carbonated. Both the creaminess and the prickliness from the carbonation lend themselves well to delivering and then maintaining the flavor of the beer. A bit of heat which comes out as the beer warms is only thing I don't really like; it detracts a little from the other flavors but the amazing body of this beer keeps things well, well above average.

O: An outstanding beer to spend some time with, I would definitely argue that it deserves both its ranking and highly sought after trade status.

A - Slightly hazed golden apricot color with a full, smooth, creamy, white head. Great retention leaving a thin whispy layer of lace.

S - Very fruity aroma with mango, pineapple, peach, grapefruit, and hints of passion fruit. There is a pleasant sweet malty backbone with a slight bready aspect. Ripe fruit just dominates though.

T - Reflects the nose with loads of ripe fruit (all the ones indicated above). A slight resin/floral flavor is hidden away in the fruit as well. A kick of bitterness toward the finish but it is balanced nicely with the bready malt and sweet fruit.

M - Medium body with above average carbonation. Fairly lively and zesty feel.

D - Loads of hoppy goodness and fruits make this very drinkable. Alcohol is very well hidden. Maybe a little strong on the bitterness but this was a very fresh bottle.

Notes: Wonderful DIPA. Loads of fruit with a great sweet and bitter contrast. Hops are very much on display. Well crafted and very enjoyable. I was extremely happy and lucky to get a sample.

Poured from a 750 ml bottle to a Cigar City Snifter.

Color: A slight murky golden orange with an off white head.

Smell: Peach, Pineapple, floral hops, grapefruit and orange.

Taste: Almost the same as the aroma but the hops are a little more forward.

Mouthfeel: Great carbonation, slightly coarse with a dry finish.

Overall: The aroma had me going from the get go. I loved all the citrus in there. Well balanced and a great hop presence. So glad JoEBoBpr sent this to me. Cheers.

Poured from a 22 oz into HF oversized wine glass 1/17/2012.

A- Beautiful golden orange with a 2 finger white head. Large tight bubbles cling to the sides of the glass. The beer is semi transparent with some alcohol legs. Really nice classic Dipa apperance.

S- Big pungent citrus and tropical fruit aroma. Ripe mango, pineapple, apricot, peach are the front runners followed by some bready malts and a little touch of alcohol. One of the best smelling beers I have had.

T- Great tasting beer, the aroma is backed up by the big sweet balanced taste. Hop bitterness comes through at the beginning followed by the bready malts and then the big sweet juicy ripe fruit. Great intense tropical citrus taste with a silky smooth finish. Wonderfully balanced and really drinkable.

M- Great mouthfeel smooth creamy nice carbonation forthe style.

O- Amazing beer, very impressive sweet fruit with a nice bready malt back bone to balance the citra an amarillo hops. Very smooth easy drinking beer with a big tropical taste and aroma that i love. Very well thought out and well made beer. Kern River Citra Dipa find it, enjoy it and then find it and enjoy it again. This one lives up to the hype.

Kern River Citra DIPA
From the Thanksgiving 2011 bottling.

Tasted on 12-05-2011.
Poured into a tulip glass from a 22oz bottle.

A – Pours a very nice and cloudy slight golden color almost like peach. The head is huge. About 2 inches tall with some nice white dense bubbles. There is some awesome sticky lacing. It recedes ever so slowly to a nice fluffy mat. Perfection in the look for sure. (5.0)

S – OMG. This is everything I’ve hoped for in a DIPA. Starts off with some juicy and exquisite tangerine, some mango notes and some slight orange peel. Peach is DEFINITELY present. Amazing! There is some delicious tropical fruit sweetness mixed in with the slight citric sweetness of the Citra hops. The background of the nose definitely has some nice toasty, bready biscuit malt notes that just help to bring the hops juice to the forefront. There is some slight hop resin but not enough to call it piney as other more East Coast IPAs. This is definitely from the other coast. (5.0)

T & M – Wow!! This is amazing! First off this has to be up there with the best DIPAS hands down. Starts off with some nice citrus hop notes mixed in with some delicious tropical fruit notes. Flavors of slight grapefruit, some orange as well as apricot and peach are extremely delicious and very well crafted. These sweet tropical flavors mix in so well with the acidic citrus notes and the hop bitterness is at a perfect level and intensity. Not to dry or aggressive but just enough to get this hop-head satisfied. This is truly a gem. Reminds me a lot of FFF Dreadnaught IPA, Bells HopSlam and dare I say PtE. In all honesty this is my favorite DIPA up there with Abrasive from Surly. Beneath that hop deliciousness there is a nice strong malt backbone. There are bread notes as well as some toasty and earthy grain notes beneath the tropical hop flavors. I can’t quit raving about this beer to my GF as she sits here and laughs at me. This is truly a perfectly balanced DIPA. The back end of the beer has some nice dry bitterness and bready aftertaste with some nice final hints of that tropical hop juice. The beers mouthfeel is perfect as well. Very nicely carbonated with just enough refreshing bubbles and a slightly oily yet easy to approach body. (5.0) (5.0)

O – What can I say that hasn’t been said before? This to me could be the Pliny killer. It is delicious and balanced but it is also fraught with flavor and intensity. Perfectly crafted brew. (5.0)

Ap - Very nice darkish-orange color. Head was thin but high and dropped down to about the width of a pinkie. Carbonated well, good lacing.

Ar - Incredible. Subtle tones throughout and very fruity but not at all overpowering. I let it open up for a few minutes and smelled it again. I want this scent as my car air-freshener, that's how I'd sum it up.

T - Off the charts. Sweet at first with bitterness from hops that is almost a bit tart but quickly overtaken again by the hoppy sweetness. Finishes as smooth as any beer I've had and invites another sip.

M - Body was a just a bit thin for my typical tastes, however, the flavor made up for it by a longshot. The medium body simply makes this one more "drinkable" as I wouldn't restrain myself to just one!

O - Outstanding. Just one heck of a great beer.
