Received in a trade from my man Steve in Cali. Thanks again buddy!

A - Pours a beautiful sunset amber color, quite hazy, but not to the point of opaqueness. A dense 3 finger bright white head sits atop the brew with excellent retention. When it finally does fade to a cap, it leaves generous swaths of creamy lace.

S - Massive lemon pith and pineapple jump out immediately in the smell (typical of a Citra hopped beer I'm finding), with mango, peach, and grapefruit rind not far behind. A bit of herbal pine and some slight dank resin also make an appearance, but take a backseat to the fruits. Maybe a hint of a sweet biscuit malt bill.

T - Um, wow. Lots of sweet nectarines, orange and mango in the front, before being pushed aside by heavy pineapple, peach, papaya, lemon pith, with the faint sweet bread malt backbone (barely) propping it up. Finishes with a fantastic blend of herbaceous pine, slight oily resin, grapefruit rind bitterness and some stone fruit sweetness. Just really amazing stuff here.

M - Just as good as it tastes, the mouthfeel is super creamy, slightly oily with a medium body and dry, moderately bitter finish with lingering sweetness. Drinks like an 8% DIPA should.

O - I don't want this bottle to end. This is just world class stuff through and through. Would take it over something like Pliny any day, although HT still reigns as DIPA champ in my book. Nevertheless, this bottle is just packed with juicy, drippy hops from start to finish, with an incredible mouthfeel to back it up. I'll be trading for more of this.

Pours a big, fluffy white head. Brew is cloudy and deep orange, deeply translucent, with gold and amber highlights and hints of red. Head retention is excellent, and lacing is sticky and thick.

Huge citrus and tropical fruit aroma (think: Enjoy By). Ruby red grapefruit and tangerine; apricots; peaches; mangos. Floral with a bit of honey. Subtle biscuity malt in the background. Absolutely superb nose.

Flavor is drier and earthier than the nose. First, a hint of citrus peel; slightly resinous hops. Then, the fruit really kicks in mid-palate: juicier citrus and tropical fruit. Final third of the hop flavors returns a mix of resin, pine, and tropical fruit, with a lasting (but pleasant) citrus peel aftertaste.

Overall flavor is surprisingly balanced and even subtle; it's not over the top, especially when compared to the aroma. Amarillo is more dominant than the Citra, IMO; it's more balanaced overall, and I don't get any dank flavors. Malt backbone is virtually nonexistent as a flavor, yet there's enough there that the hop flavors don't come across as unbalanced.

Nice, medium mouthfeel, perfect and lively in the mouth (not DIPA syrup). Minimum sting, absolutely no alcohol presence. Juicy throughout, but a fairly dry finish. Excellent.

This beer isn't really perfect in many respects, but it's damn close across the board. The only thing that I think couldn't be improved is the appearance; it just looks great. The aroma is fantastic. The taste and mouthfeel are superb, but perhaps imperfect for my particular tastes; they're certainly not flawed in any way.

A very drinkable beer; IMO, a slightly better, less citrus peel on the lasting aftertaste would bump it up yet another notch. Really a fantastic DIPA that you should thank the stars if you can get your hands on it.

Thanks to JayORear for this gift!

A: Vibrant hazy golden that seems characteristic of all of KRBC's IPAs with thin white head dissipating to a very minimal ring around the glass.

S: Bit citrusy grapefruit, guava, and stone fruit aromas. Really a clean aroma... fantastic and loud hop presence. I can see this being my favorite part about this beer... it's really quite nice.

T/M: Medium mouthfeel with moderate carbonation. A very clean beer. Mild malt and carbonation lead into candy malt sweetness reminiscent of the malt profile of Zombie Dust. Mid-sip is lightly bitter and full of juicy fruits and the finish is mild, giving way to another wave of stone fruit and pineapple.

O: Really a great beer. Very glad I got to try it, but probably not something I'll go through the trouble of trying again, although I'd happily do it given another opportunity. This really drinks like a big cousin to fresh Zombie Dust with the same almost cotton candy sweetness from the malts showing up in both brews.

First Kern Citra, first Kern anything.

A- Murky orange hue golden. Thin head, retention leads to minimal lacing.

S- Some citrus and floral bouquet, but not as much as I expected. Minimal hops.

T- Very thick, medium citrus and floral. Citra hop was not as dynamic as I thought it would be. Like it is in Pseudo Sue.

M- 5 on the M. Amazing mouthfeel. Thick and creamy. Nuts for an IPA. Minimal carb, this tastes like a winter IPA

O- Very good, but my personal preference goes to other IPA's. I will send my other one to someone who will appreciate it more.

Pours cloudy, golden like honey with a attractive cap of parchment colored head. Pinnacle of two fingers with some good hold, leaves a dense cap through the entire drink. Lacing is plentiful but sloppy.

Mother of God! Maximum tropical aroma, fresh mangoes, pineapple and loads of citrus even some watermelon in there. Very floral and powerful aroma.

Malts are balancing with some graham cracker sweetness but then makes way for the hops. Juicy fruit hop regimen bursts of sweet orange and pink citrus, mangoes, sweet pineapple and mild passionfruit, bracing pine in the finish. Bitterness is really mild and drying.

Medium body with average carbonation, ideal really. Alcohol presence is minimized nicely, drying feel that strangely brings out a piney aftertaste that really wasn't present in the beer until the finish.

Citra is everything I expected and more. The aroma is perfect and the tropical flavors coming out with such intensity in the taste is something most IPAs/DIPAs, try as they might, are unable to accomplish.

The one, the only! Being from Bakersfield, I feel so very priviledged to be so close to the origin of this sweet hop nectar! I've been told Citra is best tasted and judged on tap, so that is what I shall do for my review. Had this on tap today (2/23/14) at the source at KRBC. Poured into a standard pint glass.

Appearance - Pours a gorgeous golden orange color with a distinct cloud to it. It looks just as a proper Double IPA should.

Aroma - Unmatched. Just unmatched. Super big tropical fruits here: pineapple, mangos, sweet grapefruit. Every bit of citrusy aroma has been pulled out of the hops and makes you think you are smelling fresh squeezed tropical juice.

Taste - Exceeds the aroma. Big punch of bitterness right up front like that first bite of a morning bowl of grapefruit with hops sprinkled on top! The middle just opens up and builds upon the big tropical notes from the aroma. Sticky pineapple juice and grapefruit juice with a touch of mango. All the bitter citrus fruits you can think of come through and finish with a thorough coating of the mouth with hoppiness. You can taste with every mouthful just how well crafted and balanced the hops and malt are.

Overall - This is (to me) the pinnacle of how to perfectly marry floral and citrusy hops and a strong malt back into a perfect double IPA. The hype is real folks. This is the best DIPA I could ever ask to taste and probably will taste in my life. If you can get lucky enough to win in a future lottery for bottles, trade for, or make the trip up to KRBC to have this beer, it will not and can not disappoint!
