On-tap at the source itself in Kernville, CA. On to the beer:

We're looking at a dark brown beer with reddish hues, and a short head with solid retention and lace. Chocolate malt dominates the nose, and a good one at that. Really, this is all about chocolate related things, particularly double chocolate fudge brownies when the beer is on the palate. To be fair, there is a peck of piney hops that sprouts from time to time. Light-medium bodied, real easy to drink...wow, this is a great porter.

Tasted during the release weekend 2011, the beer was poured on-tap at Kern River Brewing Company into a pint glass. The beer is dark brown, with amber highlights held up to the light. There is a thin, steady white head. Aromas of milk chocolate, bitter dark chocolate, and coffee. The flavor is heavy coffee, with the underlying characteristics of dark chocolate from the cocoa nibs. Very round and creamy in mouth, yet slightly dry on the finish, but still smooth, somehow. Coffee and chocolate blend on the aftertaste. This beer is heavy enough to be a dessert drink on the flavor end, but light enough ABV to be a pleasant session beer. Very tasty!

On tap poured into a pint glass. Beer is a dark brown, bordering on black due to how black it is, with a finger and half of chocolaty brown frothy head. A half a finger of head stuck around for the most part, leaving a lot of nice lacing as you took drinks from the glass. Beer was too dark to see any carbonation but the way the head stuck around, it was obvious the bubbles are there.

Nose is roasted malts, some semi sweet chocolate. There are some cocoa nibs added to this beer's brewing, but the roasted malt nature is stronger than the chocolaty nibs.

Taking a sip, beer is roasty upfront, but there's too much lactic acid sourness that makes it somewhat unpleasant to drink. As the beer warmed up, this didn't improve, unfortunately.

Light bodied and well carbonated with small and ample carbonated that made the beer border on creamy. I couldn't finish a 12 oz pour of the beer due to the lactic flavors I was getting though. Nice try at a low abv porter but I felt the flavors were a bit off.

On-tap at Beachwood BBQ,

A: Pours a dark brown with a moderate white head, good lace and retention.

S: Dark chocolate, some licorice, dominated by dark malt notes.

T: Dark chocolate. Really it's a dark chocolate bar in a glass, the name isn't lying. Full dark chocolate flavour with a hint of toffee, no real hop flavour.

M: Medium-bodied, fairly smooth, very lightly acidic.

D: A good beer. You get that one flavour, but it sure is tasty. Well worth a try.

Dark, stout looking, nearly as dark as class 5. Foam is on par with outstanding or sequoia red.
Aroma is very light toffee with a semi sweet chocolateyness. The nose improves as the beer warms. IMO
Nice blend of malty flavors all linger on the tongue well after the swallow. Brewed with cocoa nibs, this brew has a truly natural flavor. Chocolate and toffee are the most dominate characteristics but there is an underlying hop presence that adds a much needed variety to keep this beer from being too sweet.
A very smooth chocolate porter, for those that enjoy the style will love this one.
Heres to hoping this one recieves atleast once a year release.
