Poured from 650ml bottle into a tulip glass. Pours burnt orange along with a big white head. Beautiful lacing that lasted throughout. Aromas of sweet and floral hops along with malts. Flavors of smooth and riseny hops. Slightly bitter backfinish. Meidum mouthfeel and decent carbonation. I quite enjoyed this DIPA from Kern River. Happy 5th Birthday!

From 22oz bomber to snifter on 2/4/12
*From notes

-- Thanks, Bill --

A: Glowing, unfiltered apricot in hue. A standard pour yields a one finger head, which evolves into a thick, white collar and minor lacing.

S: Top shelf. Juicy and ripe fruit, though it's not extreme or overly in your face. As it warms, a good amount of mandarin orange comes through.

T: Extremely crisp, and a bit lighter then originally expected. Nice, juicy hops run the gamut, though it doesn't smack the tounge with too much oil. The finish showcases a hint of white smoke.

M: Thinner then I would have liked. It makes it a bit easier to get down, but I like my DIPA's to be rich and decadent.

O: Kern's 5th Anniversary DIPA is another winner from one of Cali's top brew houses. It's not packing the kind of heat you'd expect, yet it's quaffable in ways many in-style are not. Easily recommended.

Look: Pours a yellowish orange color with a 1/4 inch off white head and good retention with some spotty lacing

Smell: Copious amounts of tropical fruits

Taste: Based on the nose it is a bit of a let down. The flavors are of grapefruit and other tropical fruits but way muted based on the nose

Mouthfeel: Medium body and fair amount of carbonation

Overall: Not nearly as good as citra but still a damn fine DIPA

22oz bottle poured into a tasting glass. It poured a bright orange/amber color with a thin, bubbly white head scattered across the to of the beer. Great color to it.

The aroma is extremely juicy and hoppy with lots of orange, peach and pineapple jumping out at me. It reminds me a lot of the Hawaiian punch fruit drink. Really loved the aroma, the tropical fruit flavors in it were fantastic.

The taste is also very juicy with more of the pineapple, peach and mango flavors throughout. I got a little more of a bitter citrus rind flavor coming out in the finish. It has a nice balance between the sweeter, tropical fruit, juicy flavors and the bitter, citrus rind flavors. Again, I'm loving the tropical, fruit punch flavors in it.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied with carbonation being moderate. Overall I thought it was a great beer and definitely right up there with my favorites of the style. I loved the fruit punch, tropical hoppiness to it and the citrus rind bitterness really balanced it out and gave it a very smooth and easy drinking quality. Awesome beer overall.

A: Orange-yellow body, larger white head caps it off, nice sudsy lacing left behind on the glass.

S: Bright citric and tropical fruits. Grapefruit, orange, tangerine.

T: Mostly a tangerine-like hop flavor. A bit "one note" as the bitterness that comes with this hop treatment is about all that is noticeable.

M: Medium bodied. Assertive carbonation. Bold bitterness throughout. Ju

O: A nice, big dIPA. However, I found it to be a bit one dimensional and not particularly interesting. Certainly not Kern River's Citra.

Had to choose this as my first review. 22oz bottle poured into a Weyerbacher tulip

Appearance: Pours a hazy honey color with a nice 2-3 fingers of cottonlike fluffy head that slowly recedes into a nice evenly distributed surface coating. A nice web of lacing on the glass as I continue to enjoy this brew.

Smell: Citrus and more citrus w/ possibly some pine.

Taste: Wow this beer is fresh as it was recently bottled. Citrus fruits being the dominant feature here. Mainly grapefruit with some traces of lemon and possibly orange. Finish is nice and piney. There is a nice hop bitterness throughout that is not too overwhelming. Nice balance here.

Mouthfeel: Moderate crisp carbonation and medium body. Very refreshing and enjoyable.

Overall: I loved this beer and I wish I traded for more than one bottle. I cannot wait to have their Citra.

Growler

Kern River Brewing Company
Kernville, CA

Dark, clear amber. Thick, off-white, soapy head. Regular lacing down the glass.

Pungent and tropical aromas galore: pineapple, orange, and mango aromas from the hops are explosive as well as floral highlights. There's a touch of bready caramel and some slight pine--but this is certainly a showcase of hops. Wow!

This is hugely bitter, which I don't at all mind, but it almost seems to get in the way of the juicy, delicate, citrusy hop notes, at least at first. That being said, once past the bitterness, there's plenty of grapefruit/orange/melon flavor to fawn over.

Exceptionally full yet disappearing mouthfeel. Incredibly drinkable.

Incredible DIPA, but not quite as good as Citra.

Pours a murky dull orange with a big 3 finger head leaving excellent retention all the way down the glass.

Smells strongly of tropical fruit and citrus hops. It's a little balanced though as bready malt also peaks in.

A little bit of tropical fruit and citrus flavor up front in the palate, but muted compared to the aroma. A little bit of bready biscuit tasting malt balanced this out and it finishes with a dry piney bitterness.

A little bit creamy with good carbonation levels.

Another very solid beer from Kern, although I prefer the Citra every so slightly. This one grew on me the more I delved into it and it went down way too smooth. I love the dry pine finish as a contrast to the citrus/bread flavor.

Big thanks to Sean for sharing this one. Served in a Cigar City snifter.

A - A voluminous white foam settles to a thin cap, thicker collar, and spotty lacework. Murky peach flesh body.

S - Big tropical fruits, citrus, light dankness with a slight leafiness to it. Malt character is evocative of buttered biscuits. Surprisingly balanced, but I guess this is a DIPA rather than an IPA.

T - Again, it's a fairly balanced West Coast DIPA, with a hefty dose of lightly sweet and bready malts (is there pilsner malt in here?) mingling with citrus and tropical hop flavors. Surprisingly low bitterness, even after multiple pours.

M - Slightly prickly and zesty carbonation. Medium body, with a juicy and sticky quality to it. Could use a tad more dryness, but there's no perceptible alcohol at all.

D - To be honest I thought this was 6-7% in ABV and had multiple glasses. However, it was definitely a bit more balanced than I expected and lacked the dryness I really like from West Coast hoppy brews. Enjoyable stuff, but there are about 10 different Pizza Port beers I'd prefer over this one.

Growler shared at a tasting at MrHirschybar's place.

Pours a murky honey orange with a tan head that settles to a film on the top of the beer. Small dots of lace form on the glass on the drink down. Smell is of lots of tropical fruit and citrus zest with a nice malt backbone. Taste is the same with a very delicious hop profile. There is a mild hop bitterness on the palate after each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer that reminds me of Citra (although I slightly prefer Citra). I am very happy I was able to try this beer after reading about how good it is.

Poured into an over-sized Mother Earth Snifter

Slightly aggressive pour yielded a big soapy 3 or 4 finger head with a light and hazy light orange color. So far so good.

Smell - grapefruit, some pine so far so good

Taste - Yea Boy! citrus up front - grapefruit, orange rind, then a good West Coast dose of Pine and resin but not even close to overpowering the citrus - So far so GREAT

Mouthfeel - Worldclass-smooth, creamy, did I say smooth
Overall - Thank you sir may I have another! World class DIPA!
