My wife and I visited this place on 27th November at about 10.30 pm. The very pleasent staff assured me that they were not closing despite the fact that it was almost empty! It has vaulted ceilings (common in Salzburg) with comfortable seating with a central bar area that has the Trummer taps (Pils and Weizen). It has a decent food menu but we had eaten earlier. The toilets are located to the left side of the bar and were spotless (as most seem to be in Austria)
This is a really nice place with a very pleasent atmosphere.

Already close to filled just after 6pm, Zum Fidelen Affen is less of a drinking establishment and more of a place to eat. The bar takes the middle of the floor as the bartender busily pours beer after beer. For the patrons who just want a drink (like I), there are a few spots around the bar where you can put your glass.

Only two beers on-tap and one bottled option; pouring were Trumer Pils and Erdinger Urweiss, while Erdinger Dunkel was bottled. There is matching glassware utilized, and it comes in 300 ml (€3.20) and 500 ml (€3.80) sizes. When in doubt, go local, and the Trumer Pils did the trick to refresh. However, the service was very slow, not only with ordering a beer, but also paying for my beer. I didn't try the food, but I presume that's a big reason why people come here, not to drink. As a drinking establishment, I should have listened to my tour guide and walked to the Augustiner biergarten!

This small bar is situated on the Mirabelle Palace side of the river, just a couple minutes walk from the main place where trams cross the river from the old town. Or walk up Linzer Gasse and its third on the left, but easy to miss! In a small narrow street behind the square, with a few tables outside in fine weather. The interior is cosy and wooden panelled, with central serving bar, tables and alcoves around the walls. Only small inside, so gets quickly crowded in the evenings, so you need to arrive early, or reserve a table! The beer served here is Trumer Pils, and its an excellent crisp tasty locally produced pilsner style beer (see other reviews of this beer). The food menu looks good, though simple, and from what we saw, is good too, and a popular eating place, especially with younger people. It can be a bit smokey (no smoking policies not so common in Austria or Germany!) Definately worth a visit for the lively friendly atmosphere and the excellent Trumer Pils. It seems to be only one of two or three bars that serve Trumer Pils on tap in Salzburg that we found in March 2006. The bar does not open till evenings.

UPDATE September 2007

Have returned to this excellent bar/restaurant and found it to be even better than before. Being only very small (about 15 tables inside) it gets very busy in the evenings, mainly with those having the excellent food, so if you want to eat here in the evenings, a table reservation is almost essential. The Trumer Pils, and Weiss beers are first rate, and whilst there a seasonal Herbstbier was also on offer, a darker more malty beer which we enjoyed too, though have to say the Trumer Weiss is one of the best. The food is excellent with wide ranging menu and specials available depending on the season, and reasonable price. We eat here two evenings (having reserved a table) after managing to get a seat late one evening just for a few beers. This is a must visit place, but be prepared to be turned away as it is so popular with locals. Tables and seating outside with large umbrellas in fine summer weather.

Excellent service from friendly staff, most of whom speak English.
