Pours nicely with not a big head at all. Very drinkable and not too hoppy. Has a slight lingering taste on the palate, not an extremely crisp finish, but quite an easy-drinking IPA that is not too high in ABV. I would buy again.

This is a GRAPEFRUITY beer....the scent is so grapefruit is almost skunk like. The taste is bitter with grapefruit. The mouthfeel is lighter in body with smooth carbonation. I would not buy this again.

Pours a lightly cloudy burnt yellow color with a small white head that falls to ring.

Aroma is nice citrus /floral notes leaning towards lemon grass some what. Nice inviting smell riding on lightly bready malt base.

Taste is nice big hop flavors tropical fruits, lemon grass notes or maybe leaning little toward lime at least in the finish. Light crisp sessionable brew, must say for me the best of these new light ABV IPA's that I have tried.

Mouthfeel is light crisp easy drinking brew. Goes down smooth and favorable.

Overall very nice for this style. Not sure if these would be sessionable for me as they go down twice as fast as a higher ABV IPA, so might be getting more alcohol in the system this way. I believe this is my new go to lawnmower beer.

Appearance: Yellow orange
Aroma: Nice floral hoppy aroma but dissipates quickly
Taste: Grassy, burnt, bitter, but not overpowering
Feel: Light
Overall: Nice beer, if you are looking for a hop forward IPA you probably will want to look elsewhere.

Pours a light yellow with a white head that doesn't trail the glass. The smell was full of hops with bright citrus scents coming through with some malt on the finish. The taste is exactly what I love about session IPA's, with no alcohol burn and bright citrus and pine with an exceptionally clean finish. If you're a fan of the style I would highly recommend.

Pours a hazy and cloudy copper color with good head and decent lacing. Smell is really nice - dank and resinous, malts, piney.

The taste and feel is where this brew falls apart for me - bitter black tea up front and not balanced enough with the malt - dry bitter finish.

A: poured from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass, orange amber colored with a large foamy white head that dissipates leaving some lacing, hazy

S: spicy fruity hops, peppery, grapefruit

T: bitter grapefruit peel, citrus, lemon, grapefruit

M: thinner with high carbonation

O: one of the better "session" IPAs

Yellow with a sticky white head.

Familiar kitchen spice aroma I can’t place. Szechuan pepper? That, grass and grapefruit.

Tongue grabbing Szechaun pepper grass hops. Tart grapefruit pith. Dry, cracker malt.

While I like it a lot Bouncy House could never take that special place in my heart reserved for Finest Kind.

This is in the new 6 pack format with an ABV of 4.3%

A-Pours a clear, orange color. Thin, white head dies off leaving barely a full layer of foam. Longs strings of lacing.

S-Grapefruit and grass hops along with a noticeable graininess.hints of apple juice as well. Smells like the hop profile is very similar to Finest Kind.

T-Bitter grapefruit, pine and grass. Again, very similar to Finest Kind - like a Finest Kind Junior of some sorts. Bready maltiness. Grains and a very bitter finish.

M-Impressively bitter. The bitterness lasts and lasts. Light bodied with peppy carbonation. Very drinkable.

O-It boasts an impressive hoppiness and bitterness. It's relatively simple in flavor. It's a good addition to the quickly burgeoning Session IPA/Session Ale style.

look: 3.5 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 3 | feel: 2.75 | overall: 3.25

Finger plus head of eggshell white, fairly loose foam with average retention, the lacing is more splotches than streaks but sticks decently. The liquid is a gauzy yellow with a slight orange tinge, like rusty pipe water, not that many bubbles but they are fat and active. Lean, piercing nose of rock salt, pretzel dough, sour white grapefruit pith and green, leafy hops, any fruit is biting pineapple and star fruit, few moments of softer juiciness, to its credit given the lack of breadth it is pungent and longlasting. Light-bodied, the carbonation is too strong for the body and it basically feels like drinking strongly carbonated mineral water. Bitter hops, cut grass, lemon and grapefruit citrus, quinine, even as it dries out the mouth it creates a tacky residue in its wake. Loses even that tropical fruit appeal, husks of apple, pineapple, nectarine, peach at best. Not malty, has moments of uncooked dough left to dry out. To be fair, it does have a certain refreshing quality and it is not so bitter as to be offputting. So, if you like the general flavor profile and mouth feel it is quaffable.

Disclaimer: I absolutely LOVE Smuttynose. If I could get "Make Mine A Smutty!" tattooed across my back in the style of a biker's rocker, I would.

That being established, I'm sorry to say ... WTF WAS this!?

The only beer that literally made me choke, and spit out on the 2nd sip. There was no taste, because my gag reflex kicked in and made me reject it as soon as it hit the back of my throat.

I love you, Smuttynose, I really do. But, from the bottom of my heart - What in the blue fuck is going on with this?

I found everything about this beer to be average. This is one of those beers that you drink "ice cold" and to only quench your thirst. It is typical and would be a good beer for someone that was not expecting the explosion of flavor that you typically get from Smuttynose. This would be something that I would recommend to someone that typically does not drink microbrews and thus won't be left disappointed. Stick to Finest Kind.

I purchased this at Brass rail, enjoyed chilled in an IPA glass.

The color is golden & hazed wtih pale shade and 3 fingers of frothy white head lace sticks in a wispy pattern. The smell is tangy with grapefruit and tropical hop accents with floral odor and mild pine scent. The feel is tangy, juicy and moderately astringent texture with medium carbonation and low sweetness with bitter dry finish.

The taste has a tangy almost lemony and grassy taste with light acidity with an astringent taste and slight tannic element with lemongrass and peppery type hop flavor with almost no malt or alcohol in the taste. Overall not a bad beer per se -very hoppy but just okay as far as drinkability goes for me

Served in an Ohio State shaker pint glass.

Dammit, who doesn't love bouncy houses? Anyway, this stuff pours a clear brass topped by a finger of lightly off-white foam. The nose comprises mild pine resin, light grapefruit rind, and sweet biscuit. The taste brings in more of the same, the resin now dominantly bitter, musty, and dank, and some some soap ducking its head in far too often to maintain a friendly relationship. Wow, this tastes awkward. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a fluid feel. Overall, this beer did not do anything good for me at all. I get the idea of a hoppy, more sessionable brew, but here the hops not only take too much control of the proceedings, but they come across as inept, overly-resinous, soapy, and basement-entrapped. Quite the disappointment from the usually above-keel Smuttynose.

Ah, Smuttynose. Best by 12 Dec, picked up at Julio's.

A clear light amber with a dense, white head that falls of to a cap with little lacing, this looks solid. The nose is bright, just like you'd expect a session IPA to, with grapefruit, pine, cotton candy, a mild bready and toasted malt character and a clean yeast profile. The doughy character that Smuttynose frequently exudes in their hoppy beers is present. Nice.

The palate opens quite bitter with grapefruit, pine, orange zest dominating along with flavors of bitter orange and a touch of mint. Thin in body with a mild resin feel, this alternates between being watery and excellent. Malt character is minimal, though there is some doughy, bready flavors present. Clean on the palate, it does seem like the water was a little hard here. A long and bitter finish, clean and refreshing, is present. Nice stuff.

Clear amber color with a thin head that vanishes quickly.
Citrusy aroma with notes of grapefruit, fresh tangerines, flowers and some caramels.
Bitter and citrusy flavor with notes of grapefruit, pine. Dry and bitter aftertaste.
Very light body with appropriate carbonation of tiny bubbles.
Good option if you are looking for a decent hoppy non-sweet Session IPA. It is very assertive with its bitterness coming in equal parts from pine and grapefruit (and gladly 84 IBUs).

(3.40) A: Healthy 2 inch capping that was coarse, foamy with a dairy color showing a respectable amount of retention. Pale pumpkin orange coloring with a slight protein haze. Medium rate of macro-carbonation bubbles. Lasting coverage with big, spongy spots on the vessel for lacing.

(3.35) S: Aroma was freshly squeezed lemon, nice level of awareness, perfumy, smooth, with some lightly dry whole barley grains.

(3.40) T: Flavor was dry grains, dry pale lemon with a mid-range of semi-dry bitterness. Some orange, dry wheat with a slight increased bitterness of pine and dry grapefruit upon the swallow.

(3.25) M: Light bodied, quiet carbonation, nothing that would really contribute to the overall enjoyment.

(3.40) O: fairly basic in complexity, and basically a filler session style ipa that pales in comparison to the likes of stone's go to and founders all day.

On tap at the Portsmouth Brewing Company. Light orange color, ok head. Mild hop aroma, pretty boring. Flavor was weak, i just need a lot more from my beers and would definitely take finestkind every time over this.

I'm a huge fan of Smuttynose, but this one is really disappointing. Pours with a thin head that dissipates quickly to a ring of froth. Aroma is light, nondescript. Grapefruit like bitterness and a thin mouth feel with little malt backbone, leaves a strange apricot like flavor lingering on the palate. I get that they were trying to make a session brew, but I think it fails due to the taste - I couldn't put more than 1 or 2 of these down. I'd much rather have a Smutty Nose Finest Kind.
