I'm a huge fan of Smuttynose, but this one is really disappointing. Pours with a thin head that dissipates quickly to a ring of froth. Aroma is light, nondescript. Grapefruit like bitterness and a thin mouth feel with little malt backbone, leaves a strange apricot like flavor lingering on the palate. I get that they were trying to make a session brew, but I think it fails due to the taste - I couldn't put more than 1 or 2 of these down. I'd much rather have a Smutty Nose Finest Kind.

I found everything about this beer to be average. This is one of those beers that you drink "ice cold" and to only quench your thirst. It is typical and would be a good beer for someone that was not expecting the explosion of flavor that you typically get from Smuttynose. This would be something that I would recommend to someone that typically does not drink microbrews and thus won't be left disappointed. Stick to Finest Kind.

Pours nicely with not a big head at all. Very drinkable and not too hoppy. Has a slight lingering taste on the palate, not an extremely crisp finish, but quite an easy-drinking IPA that is not too high in ABV. I would buy again.

22oz brown bomber with no freshness date.

Full on sticky frothing, mildly dull golden hue. Citrus pith and wild flowers with some biscuity malt make for a very aromatic nose. Snappy crispness in a fluffy body. Assertive hoppiness start to finish, bitterness is pretty sharp but lets the malt make camp. Underlying breadiness. Lots of citrus rind with a yeasty earthiness.

Super hoppy session beer, fun to knock back if you are into intensely hoppy beers.

I like Smuttynose and consider them to be highly underrated. That said, I didn't much care for this one. Falls into the watered down dandelion flavored spectrum of session ipa's.

This is a GRAPEFRUITY beer....the scent is so grapefruit is almost skunk like. The taste is bitter with grapefruit. The mouthfeel is lighter in body with smooth carbonation. I would not buy this again.

Had a pint at Cannibal in Kips Bay. Love me a lower ABV pale. I'd believe you if you said it's a session IPA, but it's not quite burying with hops like Stone Go To or Founders All-Day, however. The aroma is a bit subdued, it's lacking a big pop of hops, but does have a pleasant mix of bready malt and citrus. The flavor picks up the hops with a cutting grapefruit bitterness and light grassy and pine notes. It's a simpler profile, but clean and tasty. The body is also on the lighter side for the style, in the neighborhood of a great session beer.

Appearance: Yellow orange
Aroma: Nice floral hoppy aroma but dissipates quickly
Taste: Grassy, burnt, bitter, but not overpowering
Feel: Light
Overall: Nice beer, if you are looking for a hop forward IPA you probably will want to look elsewhere.

Bright golden color yields a lot of carbonation and a fleeting head. The nose is a balance of malt and grapefruity hops but very light. The flavor is very bitter with a piney turn. I catch an opening of lemon, apricot and malt but then it turns to a hoppy oily resin. Not a fan of this beer as it delivers a 4.3 pct ABV and nearly wrecked my palate for the night.

Poured a hazy orange with a quickly disappearing head, smell was faint with a slight grassy/hoppy aroma. Taste had a some grapefruit and malt flavor also getting some bitterness that is not enjoyable. Mouth feel is a bit too watery that does not carry the flavor very far. Overall this is nothing special, the mouth feel is weak and I cant get past the bitterness which is the only thing that lingers. Its not the worst but with some really good "session IPA's" out there it doesn't add up.

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a rich golden color with a 1 inch head. Smell is mild, a bit of hops. Taste is well balanced hops and malts, some bitterness at the finish. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a decent and sessionable beer.

From the 650 ml. bottle dated Jan 2014. Sampled on March 16, 2014 so reasonably fresh.

The pour is a cloudy golden amber color with a quick white head that becomes a ring for the remainder of the session.

The aroma has a short burst of toasted biscuit malts but then the four hops that are used to brew this really kick in and emit a floral, grassy scent.

Light body mostly but also smooth.

Like the taste, the flavor evolves from a quick introduction of caramel and biscuit malts to an explosion of citrus and biter hops that linger quite some time at the finish. Smuttynose says they do not want to call this a session beer but in the end that's what it is.

(3.40) A: Healthy 2 inch capping that was coarse, foamy with a dairy color showing a respectable amount of retention. Pale pumpkin orange coloring with a slight protein haze. Medium rate of macro-carbonation bubbles. Lasting coverage with big, spongy spots on the vessel for lacing.

(3.35) S: Aroma was freshly squeezed lemon, nice level of awareness, perfumy, smooth, with some lightly dry whole barley grains.

(3.40) T: Flavor was dry grains, dry pale lemon with a mid-range of semi-dry bitterness. Some orange, dry wheat with a slight increased bitterness of pine and dry grapefruit upon the swallow.

(3.25) M: Light bodied, quiet carbonation, nothing that would really contribute to the overall enjoyment.

(3.40) O: fairly basic in complexity, and basically a filler session style ipa that pales in comparison to the likes of stone's go to and founders all day.

Really light, without enough malt backbone to hold up the hop bitterness. Nose is freshing, almost soapy, but too much unbalanced bitterness for my tastes.

Pours orange with suspended sediment and covered with some nice, thick frothiness. Light, zesty citrus, apricot, and floral hop aromas mix with some tea and wort. Fresh, light, hoppy flavor. Floral, citrus peel bitterness, “greenness”, and light grain. Light and dry, perhaps a bit under-carbonated, but pleasant, easy drinking here.

A: The beer is hazy amber yellow in color—too hazy to see if there is any visible carbonation. It poured with a quarter finger high white head that died down rather quickly, leaving lacing on the surface, a thin collar around the edge of the glass, and lots of lacing down the sides.
S: Light to moderate aromas of citrusy and grassy hops are present in the nose.
T: The taste is similar to the smell, but the hop flavors seem to be somewhat more grassier compared to the smell. There is a moderate amount of bitterness that lingers through the finish.
M: It feels medium-bodied and crisp on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is very easy to drink and has a nice amount of crispness for a sessionable IPA.

12 oz. bottle, with best by date of 11/12/2014 printed on the bottleneck. A new beer to me from Smuttynose Brewing Co., acquired as part of a mixed six pack at the local Binny's.

Poured into a Duvel tulip glass.

A - Pours a juicy orange colored body with lots of sediment twirling around the glass and about a finger of fluffy off-white head. Leaves behind some thin strands of lacing. Looks nice.

S - The smell is dry, bitter, herbal, and grassy. Piney, with some bready biscuit malt in the background.

T - The taste follows the nose - dry, herbal, grassy, bready, and malty. Some bitter grapefruit / stone fruits are present as well.

M - The feel is pretty dry and bitter, especially considering the low abv. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

Overall, a simple IPA from Smuttynose. Not nearly as drinkable as I thought it would be, considering the low abv. Very dry and more full-bodied than I expected from such a low abv beer. Still, it is a nice flavor-packed session ale worth a try.

A-Cloudy yellow some carbonation and a one finger head.

S-Some malt, well mainly malt. Tad bit of dirt and grass.

T-Ehh. All over the place and not good. Malty, some poor grassy dirt flavors as well. Not much bitterness.

M-Medium bodied, some carbonation, not much in the way of hop resins.

O-Not sure who thought it was a good idea to release this beer. It isn't very good and when there is Finestkind available you'd be crazy to get this instead.

Had this in a bottle. Seemed to be a bit skunky. Color was good. Once it aired a bit in my glass got better. I'm sure this is a better beer on tap.

On draft at The Lark, East Northport, NY.

Poured a brassy hue with a one finger foamy white head. There was good retention and lacing.

The smell featured a vibrant herbal hop and light grainy malt.

The taste consisted of a full herbal hop spice with a touch of pine. There was a light thin graininess that was easily overshadowed by the lingering hop spice.

The mouthfeel was typical of the style.

Overall a very tasty herbal hop driven session IPA.

Pours a lightly cloudy burnt yellow color with a small white head that falls to ring.

Aroma is nice citrus /floral notes leaning towards lemon grass some what. Nice inviting smell riding on lightly bready malt base.

Taste is nice big hop flavors tropical fruits, lemon grass notes or maybe leaning little toward lime at least in the finish. Light crisp sessionable brew, must say for me the best of these new light ABV IPA's that I have tried.

Mouthfeel is light crisp easy drinking brew. Goes down smooth and favorable.

Overall very nice for this style. Not sure if these would be sessionable for me as they go down twice as fast as a higher ABV IPA, so might be getting more alcohol in the system this way. I believe this is my new go to lawnmower beer.

Had no idea this was a session IPA. Pretty biased on the style being lackluster.

A - Very little head just a 1/4 inch that pulls back to some good lacing. Very dirty bright yellow orange tons of floaties meaning its either old or unfiltered.
S - Quite bland I smell no hops just mild herbal notes and mostly sweet biscuit malts. I sip.
T - Wow thats a level of unbalanced bitterness I hoped I could avoid. It's almost medicinal with the hops they used. Very little malt balance and watery man this is bad.
M - As I said it's light and it shows with just a hop assault and no malt backup.

Quite possibly the worst session IPA I ever tasted and I am shamed that Smuttynose would release this but I didn't like the hoppy brown ale either, so maybe the hop harvest is just heavy herbal hop taste/pine floor cleaner?
