Pours a cloudy pale light copper with plenty of sediment. There is a half finger of head that dissipates very quickly. The nose has some hoppiness to it. The body and flavor profile are light while the hop bitterness on the finish is downright stinging. The hoppiness becomes slightly unpleasant with no malt backbone to counter the astringency.

I have pretty much given up on “session” IPAs as a sub-style, but I really wanted to try this one because Finest Kind is one of my favorite IPAs.

12oz bottle poured into a pint glassy this has been newly released as a year round beer in the 6 and 12pk format. The recipe was tweaked slightly from the pervious short batch release.

A: Hazy golden pour with tawny hues. Creamy off-white head settles quickly. Thin broken rings of lacing.

S: Toasted hemp seed and pine resin are forward on the nose. Lighter notes of vague citrus, passion fruit, and honeydew melon underneath. Dry crackery malt base.

T: Very earthy. Pine resin, toasted hemp seed, dry leaves. Clamping bitterness. Ruby red grapefruit fights through the toasted edge. Some more playful melon and passion fruit notes are buried deeply. Imprisoned is a better way to describe it, as they are stifled by all the biting bitterness and earthy flavors. Toasty and crackery malt. Dry toasty and resins finish provides no respite from the clamping bitterness; it lingers long after.

M: Light body has a nice creamy feel before the floor drops out from under it and it evaporates right off of the tongue. Prickling carbonation. Hop astringencies are out of control.

O: There is no semblance of balance here whatsoever. Like most session IPAs, it sacrifices body and abv but still let's the hops run rampant. It is unpleasantly bitter and astringent. I know many out there crave that strong, rip your tongue out hop grit and flavor, but this is taking it too far. The best IPAs out there have a malt body that really anchors the hop onslaught and keeps it in line just enough. Most session IPAs coming on to the market do not. So I guess if I'm rating to style, it's roughly upper middle of the pack. No part of me really wants to go back for more of this though. I would not recommend this for a neophyte either. There's too much at play here that will turn off a noob.

Appearance: pours a slightly hazy orange color with a big fluffy 3" head. Spotty lace sticks to the glass.

Smell: light earthy and citrus aroma.

Taste: bready malt presence with mild grapefruit, mango, a bit of orange, and an earthy and woody hop presence.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied beer. Crisp to start, less crisp and a touch dry at the end. Refreshing.

Overall: an easy drinking pale ale that is low in ABV. Clearly a session ale that several pints can be enjoyed.

A: Lightly hazy and pale golden color. Average white head with small bubbles.

S: Sweet tropical citrus (kiwi, mangos, grapefruit mostly) smells great. Really appealing smell.

T: Sweet tropical taste alot of kiwi. The malt back bone plays the biggest role however with some toasted bread notes. The breadiness has a light chalkiness to it. The back end falls a bit flat and dry.

M: Medium bodied. Dry crispness to it, not alot of residual sugar.Really like the mouth feel.

O: looks great, smells great, tastes great, and good body. Not too many flaws in this beer. I could drink a lot of them and enjoy doing it. Maybe tone down the lingering bitterness just a notch to really be able to drink these all night but an overall above quality beer at a great price. This quenches my thirst for a great IPA without being high in alcohol. Wish i bought more of these. Six packs in the summer i hope.
