From a six pack - best by 11/06/14 - 4.3% abv

Light, golden appearance. Looks refreshing.

Smells real nice. Crisp/sharp citrus and pine.

Citrus comes through in taste but the bitterness overpowers and lingers long after a sip.

Lacks body/malt, nothing to balance out the bitterness.

Smells good but the bitterness really takes away from sessionability/refreshment factor.

Pours very cloudy orange gold color with a ton of bubbles racing up and lively carbonation zipping up to a 2 finger thick foamy white head that faded very slowly and left good lacing. Smells of malt, flowers, piney hops, tangerine, light grapefruit, biscuit and some earthy spices; almost has a nose that’s a cross between and IPA and a Belgian Pale Ale and it smells good. Tastes like it smells, with orange peel, sweet malt, floral hops or flowers, piney hops, dry grass, tangerine, grapefruit, biscuit, wheat or hay, and some earthy spices like pepper and coriander; a lot more bitter and citrusy then the last time I had this and this bottle was more flavorful than I expected. Smooth mouthfeel, average body, mild carbonation and a zesty citrus bitterness that somehow makes for a tasty session IPA. It may be too bitter for some people but I liked this the second time around much better and would have it again for sure now after a second try.

Thin and foamy head. A faintly fruity nose with little hop presence. Pine and grapefruit are overpowered by big bitterness. This seems to be a signature trait of Smuttynose. The carbonation seems too high, and detracts from the mouthfeel. Another glass of bitterness from Smutty. Not a fan of this beer, or this brewery.

Had a 4.2% ABV edition touted as a session IPA.

Medium yellow body, slight orange hue with decent head, poor retention. Grassy scents, sourness, and hops dominate the nose. Crisp and light and a very, very astringent feel. I get that it contributes to the sessionability, but you can find a good session beer with better flavor and feel in multiple other categories of ale and lager. Too astringent as it seemingly took the bitter from the hops, but left the good juice-the devil's cut-behind. In fact, the only positive notes I had when tasting is when I swirled the yeast sediments on the bottom, and poured it into the beer to finally achieve a semblance of balance. Too bitter for an APA, bitter enough for an IPA, but that's all it's preaching.
