Wow was extremely impressed by this beer! I have now had AB panther and DBH and this is just behind DBH. Great feell... Nothing but apple brandy in the nose. No carbonation but it doesn't really affect the beer. Taste is DBH w/o the rum and huna pepper heat. Great job by smutty!

Bottle 494 of 925

Pours a viscous, dark chestnut brown color that appears pitch black and completely opaque in the glass with a minuscule off-white head that immediately fizzles away. Poor retention with no lacing to speak off.

The aroma of this beer is very inviting with an intense barrel character that's nicely integrated into the notes of the base beer. Incredible barrel presence with the perfect amount of spirit and oak without completely overpowering everything else. Really pleasant apple brandy/spicy spirit quality along with charred oak, silky vanilla bean, marshmallow and coconut. Stronger oak than expected but it doesn't overwhelm with faint toothpick and burnt wood. Underneath, there's a nice balance of subtle roast and sweeter, dessert-like lighter malts. Hints of burnt sugar, dark chocolate, coffee bean and liquid smoke followed by luscious, fudge-y chocolate cake, caramel and toffee. As it warms, the apple brandy really stands out but meshes with the stout characteristics rather than overtaking them. Very nice.

Viscous full body with very light carbonation and a sweet apple brandy flavor that lingers over the other barrel notes and complex malt bill into a sweet, slightly dry finish. Based on appearance, I was expecting this beer to be pretty flat but the mouthfeel holds up. Lots of sweet apple brandy and spicy spirit but this beer contains little to no heat. This beer is dangerously drinkable and it's hard to believe that it's 10+%. Along with the sweet apple brandy, there's some dry, toasted oak but it's not overly charred or dry. This is complimented by subtle vanilla and strong toasted coconut. The malt profile is slightly overpowered but underneath the barrel notes, there is a nice balance of roasted coffee, bitter dark chocolate, vinous fruit, licorice and sweet chocolate malt notes. Overall, it's beer is a it sweet and could use a little more balance but the flavors are really nice and it's dangerously drinkable considering it's strength.
