Poured from a 12 oz. bottle out of a seasonally available Pumpkin Ale 6-pack.
Appearance - A very appropriate pumpkiny-orange pour capped off by an incredibly full 3-finger, subtly orange tinted off-white head. Cloudy appearance. The head and retention are incredible, as well as the thick chunks left on the side of the glass. Very impressive.
Smell - Raw pumpkin comes through pretty clearly. The rest of the nose is spicy and earthy. Rather than a beer with a bit of pumpkin, this smells entirely unique. I'm sick as I drink this, so my sense of smell is unfortunately weak.
Taste - Again, unique and well done. The raw pumpkin is distinguishable. It does not taste like a sweet pumpkin pie, as I had expected, but is clearly pumpkin. The spices come through again in the unique aftertaste, cinammony, pleasantly spiced. Balanced bitterness in the mouth, also comes through a bit in aftertaste.
Mouthfeel - Medium bodied, light carbonation. A smooth drink with no unpleasantness.
Drinkability - Very unique, I wanted to try a pumpkin beer for the season and I'm quite happy with the Smuttynose offering. Not a novelty drink, but a completely different flavor. Really good, not unbalanced flavor. Smooth and drinkable for the season.
