22oz bottle poured into a globe.

A: Brassy in color with great clarity. Bubbly white head hangs around at a half inch in height. Small, spotty lacing.

S: Some earthiness up front with wet leafy hop aromas coming forward. A little yeasty. Whiffs of orange peel, mango, and a touch of pineapple. Very slight whiff of alcohol and a suggestion of grape skin. Sweet bready malts with a hint of toast.

T: Sweet bready malts and toast. Straw and wet grain. Earthy hop tastes of wet leaves and bark; more playful tastes of mango and orange peel underneath. Sweet bud and passion fruit too. Alcohol is stiff and strong, skirting the line over which it would be considered hot and boozy, but never crossing it. Minty. White grape skin and juicy fruit. Bready and toasty finish with a lingering fruity taste.

M: Very full in body with a real sense of substance. It has heft, but it isn't weighty. Firm and creamy. Light prickling carbonation. Light boozy warmth, mild hop astringency.

O: I personally enjoyed this beer, but I'm not sure if the average beer geek will get where this is coming from. These days 'IPL' automatically calls Jack's Abby and their Hoponius Union to mind, at least in this market. For good reason too, they basically created the style. This beer is not really a riff off of that approach though. It isn't boldly hoppy in the vein of a west coast IPA. It comes off more as a great big dortmunder lager with some nice supporting tropical hops. But the average beer aficionado still doesn't know much about the dortmunder style either, so marketing it that way wouldn't be any better really. I guess I'm rambling. Bottom line is that this is a good beer.

Best by 11/08/14.Pours into a becker a clear light to medium golden with a fluffy white head that sticks nicely to the sides of the glass as it settles very slowly into a soapy-like mass.Aromas have some real sweetness to them alot like alcohol dipped fruit,a bit of toasted malt thrown in.Sweet honeyed malt flavors with a bit of toasted bread and a good shot of leafy hops in the finish, quite dry and spicy in the finish. Not a citric hop bomb more Euro in nature with it's hop profile, not bad.

A - Very nice pour of a orange/amber body with a creamy head. Very nice lacing as the head dissipates.

S - Really sweet smelling, a nice aroma of fruits but it's not overbearing. Pretty subtle and clean.

T - Smooth as anything. There's a light carbonation that lingers in the background, while the fruity hops and crisp malt balance out extremely well. Very refreshing.

M - Not too heavy on the palate and a very clean aftertaste. Very balanced lager.

O - One of the finest things I've had by Smuttynose. I bought this one on a whim, having never heard of their BIG BEER series, and this one sold me on the first sip. Very well balanced and I'd recommend it to anyone. The price is a bit steep, but it's worth it.

I've been slightly into the recent lager rebirth. Jacks Abbey is making some great beer. This Smutty is actually fantastic. Great copper color, lots of puffy white head and lacing. The nose is a little weak as IMO all lagers are. The taste and mouthfeel and pretty solid, lots of citrusy fruit, carbonation and a hint of bitter. Overall, i'm very surprised by how much I like this. It was also brewed about 2 miles from my house at Smutty's new brewery so, Cheers.

Appearance: head is solid and fades rapidly. Straw murky color.

Smell: first smell was sour apples like Granny Smith, deep delves citrus fruits and wet pine. Sweet fruits.

Taste: hops, funky hops, bitter but not over powering. Faint water line (taste is not completely held together) I do not know what to call this.

Mouthfeel: lighter than I was expecting. Bitters hang around outside of tongue and side cheeks.

Overall very good but not smutty's best beer.

From the Big Bottle series with an expiration date of 11/08/14. Sampled on May 28, 2014.

The pour is golden yellow with a white head and a slight hazy opaqueness. Maybe a chill haze but it is a but foggy.

The aroma is of toasted grains, pale malts, citrus, and a smooth yeast character.

Light and refreshing body and smooth.

This is an IPL but it seems to have a more pilsener quality to it with those grainy malts, sweetness, and an added bonus of orange and/or citrus with a crisp, clean finish.

Cheers to Goblinmunkey7 for sharing this beer

Consumed 5/20/14

Appearance: Somewhere between pale orange and deep, robust gold - nice clarity - pours with a medium, off-white head - retains a nearly solid cap, leaves some nice spots of lacing

Smell: Nicely hoppy with a great lager base - great hop profile with some fruit and a nice array of citrus - juicy with some nice tropical fruit flesh, orange, tangerine, grapefruit - fruity but not aggressively hoppy - bready, crackery malts - some hints of lager yeast - lightly sweet and nicely clean

Taste: Hoppy and consistently interesting - nicely fruity with some citrus and tropical notes - apple, pear, orange, tangerine, grapefruit, and maybe some hints of pineapple - moderately bitter - bready, crackery, pale malt base with some light spiciness and earthiness from the lager yeast

Mouthfeel: Medium to light body, nicely carbonated, finishes mostly dry

Overall: Definitely tastier than a reanimated corpse

This is a great hoppy lager. It's very flavorful without being particularly aggressive or bitter (not that there is anything wrong with aggressively hoppy lagers). It's definitely worth a try. I'll probably buy a bottle or two of this.

A: The beer is slightly hazy yellow in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a short white head that quickly died down, leaving lacing on the surface and a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of spicy hops are present in the nose along with notes of bready malts.
T: The taste is mostly dominated by flavors of spicy hops, which dominate the underlying malts and hints of alcohol and also linger in the finish. There is a light to moderate amount of bitterness.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer has a nice amount of hops for an imperial pilsener, which really balance out the malts and makes the mouthfeel seem lighter than it actually is.

A-Cloudy yellow orange, nice carbonation and two finger head that leaves nice lacing.

S-Lemon, orange, banana, mild hops and wheat.

T-Starts with some citrus and grass, some wheat and lemon. Mild bitterness.

M-Lighter to medium bodied, nice carbonation.

O-For a style I am not fond of, I though this was a good beer.

A - Hazy gold, small white head leaves wonderful lacing.

S - Tropical fruits, slight pine, light barley/grains.

T - Best part of this beer. Very complex. Fruity but not citrus as the nose lead me to believe. I want to say the fruity taste is thicker than the smell. Nice light malt backbone.

M - This is where I'm a little confused. It isn't as crisp as I would'v expected. The body is medium. Carbonation is low. Lingers on the palate. I wouldn't have know this is a lager.

O - A very interesting brew, not what I expected, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Smutty does a fine job with everything. It helps to get ti fresh.
