Poured into a snifter, the appearance was a semi-dark rugged amber color with a quickly diminishing little white foamy head. But that head, it didn't even bother to last even twenty seconds before falling into oblivion. Lace? What lace, pretty much non-existent.
The aroma had a decent blend of dark and roasty malts, some sweet pine, sweet earthiness, light on the nuts, light smoke and then wrapped up with a little bit of wood.
The flavor was moderately sweet through the prior mentioned aromas and pulled in a slight dried nutty taste that played with the smoke. Seemed to blend decently in the aftertaste.
The mouthfeel was about medium bodied with a fair sipping quality about it. Some distractible dryness, but honestly, I wasn't "too" bothered by that. Carbonation felt decent, seemed to start to slide off a bit. ABV felt a touch under too, but I didn't mind.
Overall, for the most part, it's a pretty nice barleywine, but an American one? That seems a bit to be desired. I'd want to lean this one more towards an English styled barleywine. I'd still have again, either way, American or English styled.

Mid sized bottle

Pours with some moderate haze, pretty typical shade of almond amber, minor light khaki cap and leaving just a tiny bubble film and smidge or two of fine lacing.

Malted up nose with a hint of smokey wood.

Solid barley wine, more on the English side of the style guidelines....tasty, approachable, malted up nicely, drying and resiny hops in the finish...well worth a try now or likely a good candidate for putting away for a year or two...Nice work here by SN

On tap at York River Landing. Described as a pale barleywine aged on oak.
Not that pale, more an amber color. No head to speak of.
Sweet malt aroma, herbal hops.
Spicy hops, caramel, some dark fruit.
OK beer.

01/2015 bottle served cold n a teku

Appearance: murky brown with some red and a khaki head. Ugly really but I do like the packaging

Nose: oxidation, malty backbone, some booz, caramel and toffee, dark fruits

Taste: super creamy but with some prickly carbonation in the finish, spicy in the middle with a sweet beginning, toffee, malty, caramel, spicy hop profile

Overall: Nice beer but not the best. I don't remember what this costs but I probably wouldn't buy it again.

Aged for a year.

Pours a hazy brownish straw color with a finger of head. The nose is lightly bready. Sweet malt dominates the upfront flavor and the bitterness creeps in slowly and steadily toward the finish.

This offering is a nicely crafted compromise between an American-style barleywine and an English style barleywine.
