You could say, then, that Smuttynose IPA is a physical salute to the glory of the American hop grower. The citrusy hop flavor coming from a mixture of Simcoe and Santiams is pleasantly balanced by a smooth bitterness from the Amarillo hops. The beer itself is light bodied and crisp with a golden color that will throw a slight haze, as we bottle it unfiltered. At 75 IBU's, this is definitely not a training-wheels IPA, but is meant for hop lovers looking to satisfy their craving in a way that's not easy to find. We think they’ll be quite pleased.

A: [3.50] Beer pours out a nice bronze color. There is a really small white head that is gone instantly. The bottle lists the ABV (6.9%) and there is a very clear best by date 12/23/15.

S: [3.50] Mellon, some pineapple and a bit of pine. For an IPA these are all kind of subdued.

T: [3.00] The front is quite bitter. Not to the point of undrinkable - but heading in that direction. The flavors are pine and bitter grapefruit.

M: [4.00] The beer has a nice weight and feels sticky and significant on the palate. Dispite the hard hitting bitter up front it finishes pretty clean without a bitter aftertaste.

O: [3.50] This beer seems out of balance. I am looking for more of a malt backbone to balance out the hops. I am not finding it. The mouthfeel is really nice and the nose isn't bad (a tad weak) but the beer itself is tilted too far in the bitter direction without anything to counterplay it.

As fresh as I can get, fresh in at Warner's.
Hazy pour, and looks good, light Amber gold.
Modest aromas, and taste is mainly lychee and smooth hops.
Ok but has it travelled well?

Good traditional ipa. Not sweet/grapefruity like the citra ones now. Good bitterness. Definitely an ipa but not a hop bomb. Some floral hop character. Probably a 42-43.

Poured from a bottle into a tumbler glass. Best before 9/31/15(?), so it's a little older than I'd prefer. Hopefully the hoppiness has held up somewhat.

LOOK: Clear rusty yellow-gold with a medium fluffy white head and lots of streaming bubbles. Beautiful sticky lacing is left behind.

SMELL: Different than what I expected, maybe because of the age, but who knows. Tons of lemon and lemongrass, some grapefruit, pine, and a lot of dank grassiness, reminiscent of, well, weed.

TASTE: Lemons, lime, and grapefruit, dankness/marijuana, earthiness and pine, faint biscuit and honey malty sweetness. Kind of odd. Finishes nice, though. Smooth grapefruit and lemon peel bitterness.

FEEL: Medium-bodied. Smooth. Crisp carbonation.

OVERALL: Not a top favorite, but good. An all around decent IPA. I wouldn't go out of my way to buy this, but it's pretty good. I'd love to try it fresher, though.

Citrus forward IPA. The sweet malts strike a nice balance against the cloying bitterness. The Simcoe dankness sneaks through rather pleasantly but this is still dominated by the sharp citrus rind and bright orange flavor. Alcohol is present in the taste and this beer improves as it warms. Absolutely wonderful beer; my recent home brew was rather similar although admittedly not close to as good.

9/18/15 Bottle poured into snifter glass. Nice look with white frothy head. Not a ton of aroma which is a for teller cause once I tasted it, it's well balanced easy to drink but just not enough hops flavor or bitterness for me! But a good IPA overall just think it's overrated on here. That's what got me to buy it over getting another 6 pack of Flower Power.

Great mix of tropical fruit flavors and a refreshing bitterness. It's very flavorful for how accessible and cheap it is. Was a very pleasant surprise.

poured out of can with a best by date of Jan/2016
Look - cloudy, orange color with a 1 1/2" white head with larger bubbles than normal. Moderate retention and with soapy, bubbly lacing.
Smell - Citrus, pine, resin. It's all in there in a harmonious balance.
Taste - A mash of semi-sweet candies orangepeel mixed with a piney resin bitterness. Hints of lemon pith and grapefruit also come across in the later sip. You get a bit of malt sweetness as well, but not overpowering
Feel - medium feel with moderate carbonation. Clean finish.
Overall - This is one of the better IPAs I've had that's not "one of the Big Dogs". Plus, at a price point of $8.99 for a sixer of cans, it's hard to pass up.

Pours a cloudy orange color with a thick two finger foamy white head. There is a bit of soapy lacing and good carbonation. The odor for me is citrus grapefruit, lemon, orange, peach, apricot, little bit pineapple tropical fruit like, some resin and pine. The taste for me is refreshing, tropical fruits, peach, orange, grapefruit, apricot, pine, resin. Some bitterness on the backend.

Bottle best by 10-21-15. Tulip.

A:Pours a hazy light orange with modest carbonation and a 1 finger off-white head. Fades to a thick skim. Very little lacing.

S: immediate fruity, citrusy, estery nose. A very juicy citrus. Some sweet malt with hints of pine resin. Pretty subdued for an American IPA. Improves as it warms; citrus rind becomes more pronounced, but alcohol does, too.

T: Pretty bitter arrival, slight maltiness, but not sweet; pine and grapefruit peel across mid-palate; not a whole lot of the sweetness or fruitiness foreshadowed by the nose. Very bitter finish; pine and lemon pith linger. Perhaps a touch of alcohol.

M: pretty light overall; very pleasant on the mouth, extremely clean-finishing.

O: This is a very bitter, light and clean IPA. There isn't a whole lot of the floral, citrus, or tropical complexity I usually enjoy; just a whole lot of pine and a little citrus rind. If you're looking for a well-balanced, refreshing and bitter IPA, this is an above average one, and relatively affordably priced, too. Reminds me of a more-bitter Rebel IPA. This has the bitterness that Rebel is missing, but loses something in aroma to get there. I like this more than the rating would suggest; more than some IPAs I have rated higher - it just doesn't stand out.

Balanced, greatly priced IPA here. $10 for a six pack of cans can't be argued with for a beer with such flavor. Grassy hops hit hard up front with some grapefruit and pine bitterness following. Heavy malt presence makes itself known throughout and especially on the back-end. Nice brew.

Agreed with other commenters in that it's a nice balance between hops and flavor. Plus it's pretty accessible across the US at a fair price. Will definitely be searching this out again.

Absolutely one of my favorite, go-to IPA's. Lovely, radiant cloudy amber color. Full nose--fruity, citrus, sharp tang. Taste is complex with lots of grapefruit, pine resin, hint of fruity sweetness, lingering just-right bitterness. Really nicely balanced--not a hop bomb in your mouth because there's a perfect malt offset to the pine/grapefruit. Coats the tongue in a very agreeable way--love the mouth feel. A bit of resin is left to savor. Overall, one of the best American IPA's I've found anywhere. Sure, there are a number of strong contenders for that distinction and it's likely I'll eventually find something that makes my head spin and leads me to forget Finest Kind, but it hasn't happened yet.

The smell is malty with some honey sweet piney hops. The taste is pretty balanced but leaning towards malt forward. Slightly sweet and bready With a lingering bitter aftertaste. Reminds me a bit of Founders Centennial. yb

Poured from bottle dated 1/16/16 (bottled on 7/16/15) into tulip.

L - burnt orange, decent head, good lacing, unfiltered

S - Oh mama. Grapefruit, Grapefruit, Mango, and Grapefruit

T - starts off as grapefruit and mango. Then you get a hint of dankiness, tobacco and pine. The perfect mix of fruit and dank. with a slight malt backbone.

F - wow again. great carbonation with a medium feel.

O - world class indeed. not a fruit bomb. Not a bitter assault on your palette. But retains the favorable characteristics of each of those classes.

Just tried this from a can for the first time and it might be better than from a bottle. I'm glad this received World Class ranking. Definition of an IPA.

This one didn't do much for me. Its an above average IPA, but nothing that I would consider as a "go to". Malt forward as I recall without much on the nose.

The label photo is outstanding! Pours amber tone, average foamy head. Has a definite citrus aroma, medium density in your mouth. Clear hops presence, expected for an IPA. Finishes crisp and balanced. I want another!

Look: cloudy amber - early head, dissipates fast. decent lace.

Smell: citrusy

Taste: sharp, piney, woody, citrusy. Feels very clean.

Mouth feel: harder. Not as soft as 90 Minute IPA - Dogfish Head Brewery.

Pours into a pint glass a nice bronze color head faded and left a little lacing. You can taste the IBU but not on the heavy side even at 75. The hops blend well and it is a very nice drinkable IPA well done.

I love the label by the way. Anyways, this beer was what I call a reverse IPA. By that I mean that most beers use bittering hops usually in the beginning minutes of a boil then follow by their aroma hops towards the end, with a wide range of dry hopping hops. This one tasted like they used aromatic hops where the bitters usually go then vise versa. I probably said hops twenty times, I apologize lol. It's a cool take, a beer I'd definitely drink again but wouldn't be in my top tier beers.

This was a very nicely crafted IPA with a pretty drinkable profile. Malty and floral with a crisp bitter finish. Body was light to medium light. It is a shame this isn't more readily available near me. If it were, and in cans, I could see making this one a regular go to.

Would absolutely purchase and drink again.

This is about as well-balanced as IPA's can get. True to its advertising, it is crisp and drinkable yet a truly hoppy IPA. World class indeed. I will be interested to try other beers from this brand.

This is an under appreciated IPA. Exceptional balance, wonderful citrus aromas of mango, melon, and peach, no alcohol present despite 6.9% ABV and easy drinking in terms of body and carbonation. Has a really pleasant candied citrus/orange note on the inhale, almost jammy. Fits the east coast IPA ideal to a T. If there was one thing I'd want dialed back just a tad, it's the simcoe due to the ever so slight ammonia like odor. Thankfully the citrus mostly covers that up.
