You could say, then, that Smuttynose IPA is a physical salute to the glory of the American hop grower. The citrusy hop flavor coming from a mixture of Simcoe and Santiams is pleasantly balanced by a smooth bitterness from the Amarillo hops. The beer itself is light bodied and crisp with a golden color that will throw a slight haze, as we bottle it unfiltered. At 75 IBU's, this is definitely not a training-wheels IPA, but is meant for hop lovers looking to satisfy their craving in a way that's not easy to find. We think they’ll be quite pleased.

Orange pale colour. Pours a very thick foam. Smells citrusy and piney hops. Tastes like paradise, hoppy but balanced it feels crispy and smooth. Can have more and more of it. My go to IPA on the east coast.

Best by: 10.14.15. Drank 5.24.15. Poured from a 12oz bottle to a mason jar

A: Pours a murky orange pineapple color with a finger of thick white foam. A few floating particulates, next to zero visible carbonation. Looks very much the part of a flavorful east coast IPA.

S: Pine, Malt, Grapefruit, Pineapple. Relatively straightforward, and that is not a slight.

T: Floral hops with a piney tacky bitterness that last from beginning to end. A little bit of caramel malt and citrus tart shining halfway through each sip.

M: Medium body, crisp, refreshing, and with a subtle drying effect.

O: Possibly one of the best perpetually available, at reasonable cost, east coast IPAs out there. For whatever reason, I shied away from Smuttynose for my first few years in NY, and now I am wondering where the hell that came from. Some hop snobs might think they are above this beer, but pay to mind to them, this is a quality everymans IPA.

Not a bad American ipa very piney and grassy with a big malty backbone. I prefer west coast ipas.

Twelve ounce can poured into a pint glass. Big head. Looks great and aromas of light citrus with a touch of malt. Taste is lemon, grapefruit, hops, some pine and malt. Finishes with a yearning for another immediate sip. Good beer.

Ours a brownish orange with a one finger frothy white head. The nose is kind of weak. Pine, lemon, hard candy, mild malt sweetness. The flavor is mostly pine from the hops and apricot from the malt. Kind of mediocre.

Pours a golden hue and looks great coming into a glass. Hops are not overbearing but balances nice with a touch of citrus. One of my favorite ipa's. Could session this beer all day.

12oz bottle, best by 07/28/15 ABV 6.9%. My 6 year old review needs a revisit.
A - hazed tangerine body with a frothy off-white head that holds good retention
S - juicy grapefruit, bready malt, caramel
T - heavy malt backbone with toasted grain and bread crust followed by a punishing bitter pine and grapefruit hop punch
M - medium body, pine lingering on the very dry, bitter finish
O - I knew it was good, but it's better than I remember. Old school American IPA flavors - the ones I like. I'll drink this time and time again. I can't wait to get more.

Fruit on the nose is off the hook, less so on the taste. Dank, earthy notes upfront, the fruit comes out a bit as the beer warms up.

Pours a clear orange with a frothy white head. Big bubbles. Very little lacing. Smell is citrusy, piney and malty with slight tropical fruit and caramel. Taste is very much on the malty side. True East Coast IPA right here. Citrus comes next with floral, piney and tropical fruit notes. Finishes clean with a nice bitterness to balance things out. Mouthfeel is pretty spot on, maybe a little syrupy. Good carbonation and easy to drink. Overall, a good IPA. I had heard a lot about this and it seemed like we were finally getting Smuttynose out here in California. Decided to pick up a single 12oz to try. I don't regret it but was expecting a bit more. Owner of the store even told me how much he loved it when I bought it.

Appears amber in color with light carbonation. Pretty short head. Smells piney and malty. Taste is bitter and crisp. Hop forward with grain malts. Almost leaves your mouth dry. The citrus isn't especially standing out to me here... perhaps more rind than anything else. Overall a refreshing beer that I used to consider a staple. It'd probably still be if there weren't so many good IPAs nearby to compete with it. Definitely worth checking out.

Golden amber colored brew with a fingernail of off white head around the rim and about the size of a quarter in the center of the glass. Light lacing is present. Delightful citrus and marmalade aroma greets my nose. The flavor is a well balanced mix of citrus hops and clean, gentle, light malt. The mouth provides a nice firm hop burn and light stickiness.

12oz bottle, the second of a pair of Smuttynose offerings now available in my neck of the woods.

This beer pours a slightly hazy, medium golden amber colour, with one skinny finger of weakly foamy, soapy, and mostly bubbly dirty white head, which leaves some weeping mountain tributary lace around the glass as it quickly subsides.

It smells of stale pine needles, overripe orange and lemon rind, estery florals, tingly herbs, grainy pale malt, and further understated grassy, leafy hops. The taste is sharp lemon, white grapefruit, and orange peel, edgy pine resin, a strong hard water flintiness, gritty pale grainy malt, and rather peppy earthy, floral, herbal, and grassy hops.

The bubbles are fairly lively in their probing and supportive frothiness, the body a solid medium-heavy weight for the style, and mostly smooth, the various hop interlopers kind of leaving a trail of minor destruction here. It finishes off-dry, but not by much, as the complex bitterness starts to really assert its control over things.

At first sniff, I was ready to write this off as an East Coast American IPA innovator that has fallen behind the times, but once I got into it, I see that that is not quite the case. Lots of palate-challenging hop flavour and bitterness going on here, just not yer typical one-two punch of citrus and pine, solely. Enjoyable, and something I could see having at least a few rounds of.

Appearance: Clear orange golden color

Smell: iv been describing a lot of IPAs like this recently, but i pick up an orange marmalade type aroma with a floral hop undertone

Taste: I get that orange marmelade taste upfront, which is balanced by a floral/perfumey quality midpalate and throughout the finish. Theres also an undertone of bready malts from start to finish

Mouthfeel: Light medium body, goes down crisp with a dry and substantially bitter finish

Overall: This is another classic American IPA. It was probably top notch ten years ago, but the new age IPAs have far surpassed it. There's a nice balance between orange marmalade/floral hops and bready malts, but for me to rate an IPA world class these days it basically has to be tropical forward or grapefruit dominant for the most part. Considering the affordable price, i can see how this is a go to for some. If you like orange, citrus pith, floral ipas, this one is for you

The world of IPAs is pretty simple imo. There are malty IPAs, and there are hoppy IPAs. This is your textbook malty IPA, however there is a slightly surprising twang of something at the finish. But overall, will not buy this again.

In my eyes, the best widely available IPA. Full of citrusy tropical aromas of grapefruit and passionfruit with some kiwi and mango on the taste. Drinkable with some bitterness, not overwhelming at all. Doesn't get the hype because its not new and from a bigger brewery, but this is damn good.

Bottle best by July ??, 2015:
Thinking this has a bit of age on it, so that must be considered. It might have shown in the lack of nose in this pour. Overall it seemed like a hoppy APA, but a nice one.

Pour left some fluffy white head stop a hazy orange body.
As stated, nose was weak. Initially I only got cereal-like grain, but with some effort pulled out some citrus notes, maybe?
Taste is balanced, a lightly tropical or melon sweetness early, grassy hops hit late. Fairly dry beer in the end. Mouthfeel is nice, smooth, and a decent body.

12 oz. bottle into a snifter. Pours a nice, copper color with about 1/2 a finger of white foam. Great carbonation. Somewhat traditional east coast IPA smell - pine, citrus, and hops. A subtle fruity aroma is present with hints of grapefruit, mango, nand peaches. Light weight, and decently creamy mouthfeel. I get some wheat presence up front along with a piney bitterness. Not much fruit presence at all. Finishes light and watery. Lots of bitterness on the aftertaste.

Overall, not bad. Not one of my favorite IPA's, but still light and refreshing. I'm not sure if I'm tasting wheat up front, or if it's one of the hop varieties, but I'm not a huge fan of the overall taste. Again, not a bad beer. Just not that great.
