Notes/Commercial Description:
You could say, then, that Smuttynose IPA is a physical salute to the glory of the American hop grower. The citrusy hop flavor coming from a mixture of Simcoe and Santiams is pleasantly balanced by a smooth bitterness from the Amarillo hops. The beer itself is light bodied and crisp with a golden color that will throw a slight haze, as we bottle it unfiltered. At 75 IBU's, this is definitely not a training-wheels IPA, but is meant for hop lovers looking to satisfy their craving in a way that's not easy to find. We think they’ll be quite pleased.

12 oz. bottle with a great label. I love the two old guys sitting int he lawn chairs out front of the trailer home with the wagon wheel and the lawn gnome thing. Especially the John Deere hat. Pours a cloudy dark orangeish color. Upon close inspection up to a light, tiny little floaters can be seen swimming about. A moderate off-white head receeded to a really nice lace that clings to the edge of the glass. Husky grain aroma, with something else that makes me think of Christmas trees, like evergreen needles or sap.

Taste comes in second to the initial bitterness of this brew, which, strangely enough, is actually pretty good. Grain tastes, as well as that taste that makes me think of pine needles again. The alcohol is evident in there, also, but not unpleasantly so. The moisture of this brew is quickly sucked away by a very interesting dry characteristic.

All in all, reminds me of why I love IPAs, and quite possibly my favorite IPA thus far. A truly excellent brew, and my thanks again to afatty for sharing this one with me, as well. You've got great taste, man.

With the in-laws coming up from Texas and a house to clean (and a 2 year old to wrangle), I figured some of the finest-rated IPA in the land was appropriate for once things quieted down in my household. Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a standard glass.

A- Hazy orange, light caramel.

S- Citrus, most notably grapefruit, orange, lemon, some floral notes as well.

T- Does not follow suit with the nose. Pale malts at first, a hint of grapefruit, with some peppery and earthy notes to finish. That finish is rather bitter with heavy pine notes by the way and lingers quite a bit.

M- Crisp, well-carbonated, I like it!

O- I was expecting more after reading the reviews on the website. Not the worst I've had but definitely not the best, which is rather disappointing considering that Smuttynose puts out some very good beers. The finish is what turned me off the most about this, it was quite acerbic and piney and it just did not do it for me. I would recommend it though, but it's just not my taste.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a snifter.
Pours a light and hazy amber looks really good.
Smells malty, less hop aromas than I was expecting but certainly present.
Tastes very much like a west coast style IPA where hops and malts are in balance.
Mouthfeel is really nice. Enjoyed it very much.
Overall this a solid but not quite outstanding APA.
