Bottle: best by 6/23/14. The pour reveals a lovely honey coloured ale with a nice finger of chunky head. Lace peninsulas are strewn about the drinking vessel. Sparse carbonation is noted. Ever so slightly chill hazed it is, yet free of debris and quite lovely in its near clarity.
The nose has earthy hop characters and a toasty breadiness. Far less than pungent and not what would be described as a bouquet. The grain character shines through equally before the hops blossom across the palate revealing a fine balance. Fall leaves and roots and grain are the only thoughts that come forth as descriptors.
The taste is very enjoyable. Very balanced and mild with a moderate dryness following a clean and well ordered sweetness. There is nothing rambunctious here and it strikes the palate as earthy and crisp and refreshing. Dangerously drinkable as several in the reefer would find themselves an endangered species in nary one full revolution of the clock's minute hand. The drinkability is fantastic urging repeated pulls from the vessel.
Overall, this one is a welcome addition to the reviewer here in Michigan. Following a self imposed hiatus from the imbibing craft brews, sheer delight rose up within him when he found it was at long last available upon the shelf at his favorite bottle peddler. Alas, this is an exciting prospect upon his return and shall find a place in the cooling unit with regularity. Make MINE a Smutty! Cheerios to Smuttynose!

With the in-laws coming up from Texas and a house to clean (and a 2 year old to wrangle), I figured some of the finest-rated IPA in the land was appropriate for once things quieted down in my household. Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a standard glass.
A- Hazy orange, light caramel.
S- Citrus, most notably grapefruit, orange, lemon, some floral notes as well.
T- Does not follow suit with the nose. Pale malts at first, a hint of grapefruit, with some peppery and earthy notes to finish. That finish is rather bitter with heavy pine notes by the way and lingers quite a bit.
M- Crisp, well-carbonated, I like it!
O- I was expecting more after reading the reviews on the website. Not the worst I've had but definitely not the best, which is rather disappointing considering that Smuttynose puts out some very good beers. The finish is what turned me off the most about this, it was quite acerbic and piney and it just did not do it for me. I would recommend it though, but it's just not my taste.
