Notes/Commercial Description:
You could say, then, that Smuttynose IPA is a physical salute to the glory of the American hop grower. The citrusy hop flavor coming from a mixture of Simcoe and Santiams is pleasantly balanced by a smooth bitterness from the Amarillo hops. The beer itself is light bodied and crisp with a golden color that will throw a slight haze, as we bottle it unfiltered. At 75 IBU's, this is definitely not a training-wheels IPA, but is meant for hop lovers looking to satisfy their craving in a way that's not easy to find. We think they’ll be quite pleased.

The Best By date is 10/8/13. I’m not sure how long that means the beer has been on the shelf.

The beer pours with a large white head in a gently hazy peachy orange.

The aroma has tons of sweet bready malt, a good amount of citrus. There’s some floral sweet notes. Definitely more East Coast because of the sweetness, but it surely has that huge hoppiness with the sweetness too.

The beer has sweetness floral and citrus in the front. And then there’s a bready malt in the middle that jumps up for a second. But then there’s a wonderful herbal, pine, tea bitterness that really creeps up on you and then leaves your tongue quite dry.

The ending bitterness really does linger. The mouthfeel is light to medium.

This stands out for me being a really strongly bitter IPA. There’s some balance with the caramel sweetness, but the bitterness is one of the biggest I’ve had for an IPA. I prefer a more West Coast style, but interesting enough. I recommend it.

Best before 5/14/14. Smells quite nice—sweet and clean. Taste is a little hard to place, but I think it's white grape juice; also a little dry white wine, along with a very grassy flavor. Some sweetness, but strong bitterness. Nice aftertaste, maybe some wood notes (cherry or cedar?) after the bitterness fades a bit. Mouthfeel is a little over-carbonated. Seems like a well-made IPA, just not my favorite flavor profile.

Picked this one up on special and wanted to give it a try. I had not previously like the two Smuttynose beers I had as much as others but figured I would give them another go. Disappointment! Excellent looking beer but no IPA pop in the smell or in the taste. More bitter without the IPA flavor bang. Wondering if I got some stale beer and that is why it was on special. Hope to try this again in future to test theory.

Went and checked the date and it is not old. Bummer, just did not like this one. May not buy again after all.

12oz longneck
A) Pours with a two finger head. Slowly settles leaving a big bubble lacing at the edge of the glass. Hazy bronze colored body with visible sediment.
S) Citrus and pine. Not overly aromatic
T) Caramel sweetness. Citrus hop zing. Well balanced. Lingering hop bite in the aftertaste.
M) Creamy. Smooth. Medium body.
O) A well crafted IPA. Drinkable. Not too ridiculous on the hops. Well balanced. I'd definitely drink another one.

Really good IPA. Not overly hopped, but there is still a lot of happiness there. The hops add more bitterness than flavor but not an unpleasant or overwhelming bitterness. There is definitely still flavor there as well. It leaves a very pleasant and subtle after taste. Definitely an enjoyable IPA that is not harsh at all.

Enjoyed yesterday from bottle to glass, obtained via trade (yet another awesome extra) from @totalbangover.
The last few months I've been on a big double an triple IPA kick and as such, haven't been buying many single IPAs and once I cracked and poured this fine beer, I was a happy camper.
If you were to take a picture of what a great IPA were to look like in a glass, this would be it: perfect golden/orangish hue with a finger+ of nice creamy white foam.
If you were to try to describe what a highly rated single IPA were to taste like...ding ding ding. Hops, some fruit and lots of goodness. The nose too was fantastic.
Yet another beer that I can't get in my area, hell, my state, that I wish I could. Nothing that people create threads about but one that, as the label illustrates, I could see sitting on the porch or deck with a buddy enjoying a sixer of and mug like the company, enjoying every last minute of.
VERY SOLID IPA. A fridge staple.
