Notes/Commercial Description:
You could say, then, that Smuttynose IPA is a physical salute to the glory of the American hop grower. The citrusy hop flavor coming from a mixture of Simcoe and Santiams is pleasantly balanced by a smooth bitterness from the Amarillo hops. The beer itself is light bodied and crisp with a golden color that will throw a slight haze, as we bottle it unfiltered. At 75 IBU's, this is definitely not a training-wheels IPA, but is meant for hop lovers looking to satisfy their craving in a way that's not easy to find. We think they’ll be quite pleased.

A- Light gold with a thin white head that is stickier than would be expected from said thinness. A LOT of sediment that is fine as far as the beer goes, but adds nothing to the appearance.

S- Smell is dominated by hops, though the smell isn't all that strong. There is a maltiness apparent in the smell that balances, so far as they can be balanced, the hops.

T- Taste is equally hoppy all the way through, from beginning to end. A bitter hop aftertaste. Malts are apparent, though under-represented in relation to the hops, which could be good or bad. As an IPA, I enjoy the unbalance. Overall, there is not much complexity here---hops and malts.

M- On the lighter side of medium-bodied.

D- This is an all-around great beer, and it is made better by its drinkability. A 6 pack will be no problem here. Very enjoyable, very sessionable.

With the in-laws coming up from Texas and a house to clean (and a 2 year old to wrangle), I figured some of the finest-rated IPA in the land was appropriate for once things quieted down in my household. Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a standard glass.

A- Hazy orange, light caramel.

S- Citrus, most notably grapefruit, orange, lemon, some floral notes as well.

T- Does not follow suit with the nose. Pale malts at first, a hint of grapefruit, with some peppery and earthy notes to finish. That finish is rather bitter with heavy pine notes by the way and lingers quite a bit.

M- Crisp, well-carbonated, I like it!

O- I was expecting more after reading the reviews on the website. Not the worst I've had but definitely not the best, which is rather disappointing considering that Smuttynose puts out some very good beers. The finish is what turned me off the most about this, it was quite acerbic and piney and it just did not do it for me. I would recommend it though, but it's just not my taste.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a snifter.
Pours a light and hazy amber looks really good.
Smells malty, less hop aromas than I was expecting but certainly present.
Tastes very much like a west coast style IPA where hops and malts are in balance.
Mouthfeel is really nice. Enjoyed it very much.
Overall this a solid but not quite outstanding APA.
