Notes/Commercial Description:
You could say, then, that Smuttynose IPA is a physical salute to the glory of the American hop grower. The citrusy hop flavor coming from a mixture of Simcoe and Santiams is pleasantly balanced by a smooth bitterness from the Amarillo hops. The beer itself is light bodied and crisp with a golden color that will throw a slight haze, as we bottle it unfiltered. At 75 IBU's, this is definitely not a training-wheels IPA, but is meant for hop lovers looking to satisfy their craving in a way that's not easy to find. We think they’ll be quite pleased.

Thanks to mtardiff for sending this extra. Best before 04/11/12. Poured into a Duvel tulip.

A - Pours an uber-clear orange amber with a 1/2-finger beige head. The retention is not great, but it leaves nice lacing and thin covering remains. Gentle fine carbonation is visible.

S - I'm not getting much from the nose... Slightly sweet malt and herbal hops.

T - Light grapefruit in front, bready malts in the middle with a trace of sweetness (honey?). Then the hops come in and dominate with pine and grass flavors.

M - Medium bodied. Slick and velvety smooth on the way in with light carbonation. The hop oils coat nicely and are very smooth. Not chalky or overly dry.

O/D - This is a nice beer. Nice showcase of pine and grassy hop bitterness. Excellent look and feel. To me, the nose and the flavor left a bit to be desired, but I wouldn't pass on it had I the chance to try it again.

Bottle poured into a pint glass.

A: A slightly hazy citrus orange color with a wonderful head that lingers for a long time and leaves great, great lacing all over the glass. This is a wonderful looking IPA indeed.

S: The aroma is dominated by citrus and bitter smelling hop aromas. It smells quite delicious for an American IPA and the malt backbone is barely detectable. The scent, and color for that matter, remind me of a two hearted.

T: A tantalizing mix of bitterness with nice citrus flavors and a long lasting bitter aftertaste. It starts out slightly sweet on the palate and then yields easily to the bold hops.

M: The mouthfeel is medium bodied and smooth feeling. Good level of carb.

O: This is a great American IPA. It is heavily one sided on hops, but that's what I expect from an American IPA. I love Humulus Lupulus and this beer makes good use of them. The lacing on this beer is just wonderful as well and a small head lingered the entire time. This is a great IPA.

Thanks to G311 for the bottle!

Pours a hazy orange/straw with a 2 finger foamy head.

Aroma is of dank floral/citrus hops. A little bit of a malt backbone.

Starts off with a bit of citrus and lemon. Just a touch of caramel sweetness and finishes very floral and a bit fruity and dry.

Mouthfeel and carb are good for the style.

Unimpressed although perfectly drinkable with no off flavors. Not a terribly complex brew. Not sure how they do bottle dating, but this one is still in its window by a couple months so definitely not old. Maybe it's better ultra-fresh.
