Notes/Commercial Description:
You could say, then, that Smuttynose IPA is a physical salute to the glory of the American hop grower. The citrusy hop flavor coming from a mixture of Simcoe and Santiams is pleasantly balanced by a smooth bitterness from the Amarillo hops. The beer itself is light bodied and crisp with a golden color that will throw a slight haze, as we bottle it unfiltered. At 75 IBU's, this is definitely not a training-wheels IPA, but is meant for hop lovers looking to satisfy their craving in a way that's not easy to find. We think they’ll be quite pleased.

Poured from their 12oz bottle...

Appearance - Poured just over 2 fingers of lite golden eggshell head, color of the beer is a cloudy golden orange amber, really a beautiful beer. Thick sudsy lacing, very nice.

Smell - Lite citrus and pine with bready malts.

Taste - This is defrinitely a hop forward beer, but not overly strong. A fairly complex beer - starts out bitter citrus, bready malts, grassy green and floral hops. Slightest sweetness at the center, but not sugary or carmelly at all, like the sweetness you would get from fresh baked wheat bread. The finish has a very slight spice anise flavor, with dried grapefruit zests and pine, almost enough dryness and bitterness to pucker the mouth.

Mouthfeel - Nearly medium mouthfeel, ample but very smooth foaming carb. Very drinkable.

Overall - The bitterness gets pretty intense long into the finish on this one. The alcohol is well hidden. This is a very hop-forward ale, with lots of floral, grassy and piney hop profiles. Citrus is there too, along with some dry bready malt characters. I personally would like a little more sweetness, but for those who don't like sweetness but do like strong hop flavors will love this.

I picked up this bottle to work on reviewing the top 100 beers of fame.

I am a big fan of the IPA's as a hophead, and it is nice to take in another high quality hoppy beer.

This beer is bottle conditioned, which yields a hazy orange. There wasn't much foam from my pour into a snifter.

The smell is all pine with some floral notes. There is a very refreshing bouquet from this bottle.

The flavor is kind of raw. You get a ton of hop flavor, but there is a pretty decent dose of bitterness as well. It doesn't quite work out for balance. Still, it was a very good IPA. I enjoyed this glass, and I plan to pick up a six pack in the future.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into my DFH Signature glass (quickly becoming the best thing in glassware since the invention of blow glass).
A: A nice orange color with little head but some decent retention and lacing. Clear as can be, somewhat generic for an IPA but as always a nice sight.
S: Pine and hops, not a lot going on here.
T: Hops, finishes with some more hops flavor and feels very full. Leaves a distinct bitterness in the mouth.
M:Hopes, some citrus and a lot of flavor that’s packed into the beer.
O: Generic for an IPA, but holds its ground. Nothing out of the ordinary and I think I prefer 60min, but this is good. B+
