Notes/Commercial Description:
You could say, then, that Smuttynose IPA is a physical salute to the glory of the American hop grower. The citrusy hop flavor coming from a mixture of Simcoe and Santiams is pleasantly balanced by a smooth bitterness from the Amarillo hops. The beer itself is light bodied and crisp with a golden color that will throw a slight haze, as we bottle it unfiltered. At 75 IBU's, this is definitely not a training-wheels IPA, but is meant for hop lovers looking to satisfy their craving in a way that's not easy to find. We think they’ll be quite pleased.

Right out of the bottle, this pours as one of the most handsome beers I have ever seen. I luminescent orange golden color with an aggressive white head that slowly retreats leaving thick, sticky lace. Extremely impressive. The smell is more subdued, with some citrus and floral hop aromas, and light biscuit malts.

Despite the relatively quiet nose, flavors burst out nicely, with orange and lemon notes, and a bushel of pine. Minimal balance exists, primarily the bread and biscuit from the nose, but hops rule the roost, as they should. The aftertaste is laced in pine sap and a late coating of alcohol. The carbonation seems high at first, but everything clicks so well it must be by design.

I can't believe it took me so many years to try this one. Lives up to the hype. Almost certainly among the top three american IPAs I've ever had the pleasure to try. Outstanding.

Smuttynose has arrived in Southern Illinois! Picked up the sample pack today and with the reputation of this brew, had to have it first. Bottle poured into a Duvel tulip; best by date of June, 2012. Hazy yellow body with a good tint of orange. Nice nearly two-finger head that leaves some decent lacing.

Very hoppy aroma, mostly grapefruit, and a little tropical fruit it the background. The malt aroma is sweet and grainy.

Nice bitter hop flavor up front that definitely features the grapefruit taste and pine resin. Very good caramel malt flavor that balances with the bitterness well. A little tropical fruit way in the background, like mango and pineapple, but muted. Still, a complex flavor that is not one-dimensional.

Medium texture to the mouthfeel and very drinkable. Glad this is distributed in our area now. Will be a regular in my rotation for sure.

12 oz bottle in a trade with SonofaLime, Thanks a bunch Mike! Poured into my usual beer goblet.

Appearance: A hazy light copper beer with a frothy one finger wide white head. Ample sheets of lacing grace the glass as I drink.

Smell: A prominent malt backbone is the first thing that I notice. Citric hops are second, I think I can smell grapefruit in this one. This bottle is a little old, I would love to try this one fresh, or on tap sometime.

Taste: The taste a very balanced blend of hop bitterness and malty semi-sweetness. The grapefruit comes through with an nice wave of bitterness after the initial short kick of sweetness from the malts. The finish is a mile long on this beer.

Mouthfeel: This one has a light body and ample smooth carbonation. The bitter flavors coat the mouth thoroughly.

Overall: I think I may be missing some of the hop nuances, but this is a well made and tasty IPA. Would seek out again, especially if fresh.

S: Hops. Not super strong. 4

T: Mild grapefruit hops and some slight bitterness. Smooth finish. 4

M: fizzy 3.5

Had this right out of the bottle at a bar...so I cannot comment on look. Once I have this again, I will edit this review, but for now I'd like to put down my 2 cents.
Tastes like a citrusy hop dipped in malt. You really get that nice citrusy hop flavor right off the bat, but it uncovers the bit of malty center. Nice balance and very drinkable. This is a really great east coast IPA and worthy of its world class ranking.

A: This pours a nice copper with a lot of particles floating around in the glass. The head is white and very thick. It slowly fades and leaves a lot of lace on the glass.

S: Lots of hops and malt. It really smells like when you are making your own beer and the malt is seeping in hot water. There really isnt too much going on, but it smells very good.

T: This is just an amazing IPA. It firsts has a lot of hops and then lots of malt. As the beer lingers on my palate, I get tons more malt with hops mixed in. it also has some random tea qualities Man this is amazing.

M: The beer feels amazing. At firsts its really smooth, but then has a tiny bit of crispness on the back on the throat. Too me its one of the best feeling IPAs on the market.

O: This beer is amazing! This just hits the spots in so many ways and it doesnt get old. Just amazing!

Sunshine into pale amber with a mist of particles and a thin white film that rings. Grapefruit and melon on the nose.
Saltines and honeydew up front, a bit of toffee, then citrus oil and grapefruit rind hops.
Lemonheadz finish and salty bitter linger. Soft, creamy, oily and medium.

Not a West Coast IPA, with almost an APA level of aroma hops and only moderate IBUs. The thing about this is the balance between sweet, tart and bitter. That and the smooth body (I wonder if the cloudy yeast helps here) make this extremely drinkable.

An IPA for all seasons.
