You could say, then, that Smuttynose IPA is a physical salute to the glory of the American hop grower. The citrusy hop flavor coming from a mixture of Simcoe and Santiams is pleasantly balanced by a smooth bitterness from the Amarillo hops. The beer itself is light bodied and crisp with a golden color that will throw a slight haze, as we bottle it unfiltered. At 75 IBU's, this is definitely not a training-wheels IPA, but is meant for hop lovers looking to satisfy their craving in a way that's not easy to find. We think they’ll be quite pleased.

Dark golden in colour, with a moderate sized white head. Dissipates fairly quickly leaving some lacing.

Smell is not strong, but consists mainly of hops. A bit soapy and earthy. Slightly floral.

Beer has a hop flavour, moderately bitter, a bit of citrus. A bit of an earthy flavour and slightly soapy. Backed by a malt flavour that is somewhere between caramel and biscuit.

Medium bodied, moderate carbonation.

Overall, pretty good IPA. The floral and earthy element gives it some British aspects, though it is certainly an American IPA.

Received in a trade from Colby, thanks man. Poured from bottle with clear dates on the edge of the label but no detectable notch so I cannot confirm how fresh this beer is. The beer pouts a mostly clear copper orange color with a nice 1.5 finger head with good retention an solid lacing. There is a notable amount of suspended clutter in the beer, perhaps an old bottle? The aroma is a blend of toasted malt and earthy hops, the hops actually take a back seat to the malty character which is almost burnt in aroma, interesting. The flavor follows suit with a malty forward prescense and residual sweetness. Medium bitterness. The hops are dominated by malt throughout, makes me wonder how old this bottle is after reading other reviews. The beer is medium bodies with good carbonation. Overall I think this is an old bottle as it doesn't correlate with other reviews.

A: The beer is clear deep yellow in color but has lots of particles floating in suspension. There’s a light amount of visible carbonation, which makes the particles somewhat resemble a lava lamp as they rise up from the center of the glass and fall down the edges. It poured with a finger high off white head that has good retention properties and consistently left a thin head covering the surface and lots of rings of bubbles around the edge of the glass.
S: The smell has aromas of floral hops along with notes of citrus and pine resin along with hints of caramel.
T: The taste has flavors of floral and pine resin hops and is accompanied by a moderate amount of bitterness from start to finish. Hints of caramel malts are also present.
M: It feels medium-bodied and crisp on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation. There is some dryness in the finish.
O: I found this to be an easy drinking IPA that is packed with hops but isn’t overly bitter. The floral hops are an interesting change of pace compared to all of the grapefruit hops currently available on the market. The alcohol is well hidden from the taste.

Orange with a small white head that does not stick around. Taste is of hops with elements of flowers, celery, grass, citurs and grapefruit. Slight malty undertones are present. Medium mouthfeel with a nice lingering bitterness. Great full-bodied IPA.

pours from the bottle to the glass with a reddish copper color and good few inches of head.
Odor is floral and citrus. Nice overall aroma!
Taste is nicely balanced with floral and citrus. Mouth feel is smooth and not harsh at all. Combination of taste and mouth feel work very well and make for a great balance.

This is my first official 'beer review' so i am still learning all of the different tastes and smells associated with trying different types of beers. Here goes nothing!

A - Light golden color with particles floating through, almost looks like they are nicely suspended in the carbonation.

S - Grapefruity smell.

T - Initial taste is very strong of grapefruit and a little bit of pine in the mix.

M - Feels mostly on the back part of the tongue and a little dry after swallowed.

Overall, definitely enjoyed this beer and enjoyed trying to articulate the different flavors involved in the beer.

Appearance - Nice bright golden orange/yellow, pours about a fingers worth of a tight white bubbly head. Great lacing

Smell - Earthy pine needles, touches of exotic, tropical fruits and sweet lemons

Taste - Big hop bite, earthy piney needles and a touch of grapefruit

Mouthfeel - medium carbonation, sticky.

Overall - To me, this is the quintessential east coast ipa, piney and not very tropical. Great for when you want a nice bite

A: Golden honey color, sticky head with nice lacing.

S: Pine needles and hops, very familiar.

T: Wow, very hoppy. On the high end of the east coast style, very piney and resiny. Delicious.

M: Sticky and dry. Typical.

O: Very good beer, great IPA.
