Notes/Commercial Description:
You could say, then, that Smuttynose IPA is a physical salute to the glory of the American hop grower. The citrusy hop flavor coming from a mixture of Simcoe and Santiams is pleasantly balanced by a smooth bitterness from the Amarillo hops. The beer itself is light bodied and crisp with a golden color that will throw a slight haze, as we bottle it unfiltered. At 75 IBU's, this is definitely not a training-wheels IPA, but is meant for hop lovers looking to satisfy their craving in a way that's not easy to find. We think they’ll be quite pleased.

A - Pours a hazy, cloudy, unfiltered orange-copper with over two fingers of white frothy head. Bubbles feed a half finger of retained head that lasted throughout. 1/4 way down the glass, rows of thick lace pile on.

S - All kinds of hop going on in the nose. Big grapefruit presence. Piney. Some floral and lemon/citrus as well.

T - Clean, subtly sweet malt underlying a strong hop character. Slightly spicy and floral hops give way to big flavor and bitterness of the grapefruit variety.

MF - Squarely medium-bodied, yet more drinkable than 6.9% would seem. Refreshing, lively carbonation. Bitter semi-dry finish. Great.

O - Fantastic. Grapefruit grapefruit grapefruit. Great pour, refreshing, tasty, fairly drinkable.

Reviewed from notes, 1/15/12.

Steve knocked it out of the park on this trade, yet another one of my East-Coast wants, Smuttynose Finest Kind IPA. 12oz bottle (couldn't find the freshness date), poured into a Ram 2012 Mug Club mug.

A: Pretty clear and visibly effervescent orange honey color, with a mountain of rocky off white head that sticks around and leaves good lace.

S: Lots of spices, earthy and piney and even wood-like in a way. Pale malt character in the form of some breadyness, hints of soft white fruit flesh, fresh cut grass.

T: Follows the nose, spicy & grassy hops, earthiness, overripened grapefruit and citrus rind, light herbal pine notes and a pale malt character that shows some toasted grain and honey sweetness.

MF: Decent bitterness and light dryness, light to medium mouthfeel.

O: Decent East Coast offering, very balanced and even mild in some senses but still hop-forward.

I cannot get enough of this brew. I have consumed quite a bit of Finest Kind that when they discontinued it, I was heart broken. Glad it's back in SC.

It is an unfiltered, copper, delicious looking brew. It owns your glass with decadent head/lacing. When I'm finished, I want to lick the glass clean.

It has a nice floral aroma. Hints of citrus (nothing too powerful).

The taste is a kick to your senses. It has a very hoppy bite that you can taste in your throat. Very hoppy, grape fruit tones and a bitterness that is balanced. Your nasal cavity and tongue will synchronize and enjoy this experience.

I loved this when I lived in SC. Then I had it closer in proximity to it's brewery (brewery is in NH, I was in D.C. a lot closer than where I reside) and wow! Finest Kind fresh is amazing.

Right out of the bottle, this pours as one of the most handsome beers I have ever seen. I luminescent orange golden color with an aggressive white head that slowly retreats leaving thick, sticky lace. Extremely impressive. The smell is more subdued, with some citrus and floral hop aromas, and light biscuit malts.

Despite the relatively quiet nose, flavors burst out nicely, with orange and lemon notes, and a bushel of pine. Minimal balance exists, primarily the bread and biscuit from the nose, but hops rule the roost, as they should. The aftertaste is laced in pine sap and a late coating of alcohol. The carbonation seems high at first, but everything clicks so well it must be by design.

I can't believe it took me so many years to try this one. Lives up to the hype. Almost certainly among the top three american IPAs I've ever had the pleasure to try. Outstanding.

Smuttynose has arrived in Southern Illinois! Picked up the sample pack today and with the reputation of this brew, had to have it first. Bottle poured into a Duvel tulip; best by date of June, 2012. Hazy yellow body with a good tint of orange. Nice nearly two-finger head that leaves some decent lacing.

Very hoppy aroma, mostly grapefruit, and a little tropical fruit it the background. The malt aroma is sweet and grainy.

Nice bitter hop flavor up front that definitely features the grapefruit taste and pine resin. Very good caramel malt flavor that balances with the bitterness well. A little tropical fruit way in the background, like mango and pineapple, but muted. Still, a complex flavor that is not one-dimensional.

Medium texture to the mouthfeel and very drinkable. Glad this is distributed in our area now. Will be a regular in my rotation for sure.
