You could say, then, that Smuttynose IPA is a physical salute to the glory of the American hop grower. The citrusy hop flavor coming from a mixture of Simcoe and Santiams is pleasantly balanced by a smooth bitterness from the Amarillo hops. The beer itself is light bodied and crisp with a golden color that will throw a slight haze, as we bottle it unfiltered. At 75 IBU's, this is definitely not a training-wheels IPA, but is meant for hop lovers looking to satisfy their craving in a way that's not easy to find. We think they’ll be quite pleased.

Cask pour served in a true pint, the beer is a bright, slightly hazed honey-gold coloring with a frothy, bubbly, off-white head of about a half an inch. Aromas are flying off this brew, with a hoppy, citrus, and pepper blend that has a strong resiny overtone. Flavors are more subtle with the cask serving, with a roasty undertone giving rise to the wet, resiny, cedar hops profile that fuels the tastebuds. Light toffee backbone boosts the grapefruit highlights amongst the bitter and rich hops. This tastes great on cask. Bitter and resiny aftertaste, it's like chewing on a cedar and pine air freshener. The body is light and extremely smooth from the cask pour. The finish starts creamy smooth, then shifts quickly to a drying bitter end. Delicious!

12 oz. bottle poured into a pint glass. Best before 7/16/12.

A: nice light amber color with a thin white head. The head quickly faded into chunks that made the appearance a little less appealing.

S: mixture of citrus and earth. Nice nose. Lemon zest with a bit of grass. Fitting for the style.

T: malt up front with a citrus hop finish. Very clean and palatable. Dry with a bit of a bitter finish. Left my mouth a bit dry.

M: dry and appropriately thin. Encouraged me to come back for another sip.

O: an impressive effort start to finish. A very good representation of the style. Happy with the purchase and looking forward to the rest of the six pack.

This was in the current mixed 12 pack I found at Self Serve Beverage in York, PA.

Look: The beer poured a cloudy yellowish orange color with obvious sediment on the bottom of the glass. Head was a transparent film of tiny bubbles.

Smell: The nose had some herbal grassy notes and a biscuit quality that almost seemed grainy. That was about it for the aroma.

Taste: First was on the palate was an herbal character that faded into a pleasant bitterness. The aftertaste was rather plain – made up of a sweet candy sugar mixed with an earthy grass note. Finish was more of the herbal quality – and then nothing.

This was an ok IPA. The only other beer I could compare this to is the Harpoon IPA. I don’t know if that's a compliment or an insult. Regardless - It’s a very light IPA that may appeal to the Belgian Pale lovers out there.
