Poured from 22oz bottle. Thanks to VinnieVanGogh for cracking this one open.
A- Pours a semi-hazed deep amber color. When held to the light you can pick up a nice ruby hue on the edges. One finger tan head shows medium retention. Light streaky lacing left on the sides of the glass.
S- The caramel malt that usually goes hand in hand with barleywines is there but in the background pretty much the entire time. Peach and banana are what really jump out in the aroma at first although the peach dominates a second into the aroma profile. Light alcohol notes which once again I expected to be a little bigger linger here and there but never take full force. Citrus overtones throughout the nose to me. Even the darker fruits which are forerunners in most barleywines just are not there...
T- Like the nose the flavor is different than most barleywines. Peach notes hit right off the bat and make you wonder if it is a barleywine you are drinking. Hints of caramel and a brown sugar tone come through next with the caramel malts just being a steady malt base more than anything else. Alcohol really never grows in this one as well. I kept expecting a big hit of alcohol but one never came. Citrus tones all over this beer. There is some bittering hops that do put a hault on the sweetness throughout the beer itself.
M- Medium-heavy mouthfeel. Carbonation is good for the style. Flavors of peach, banana, and light caramel malts are left on the palate. Aftertaste is hints of alcohol, light caramel malt, citrus, and bittering hops. Alcohol drying on the palate is medium. Flavors were well balanced for the style...at times I thought a little too balanced with the malts losing out. No off flavors at all in this beer.
O- This beer really is different for the style. I expected this malty beast and it didn't happen. Citrus overtones and a nice underlying malt presence made this a very enjoyable beer. The ABV was not present at all for most of the beer. This beer is fantastic fresh which I don't say for many barleywines.

22oz bottle into a snifter
A: Pours a hazy, nearly opaque orangish brown with 1 fingers width of light tan head. Head dissipates down fairly quickly, and leaves a fair amount of lacing.
S: Typical American barleywine notes with candied sugar, caramel/toffee, a nutty character, and some piney and citrus hops.
T: Fair amount of hops with piney and citrus rind bitterness, coupled with lots of malt flavors including caramel/toffee and burnt sugar.
M/D: Medium body, appropriately low carbonation, pretty smooth, ABV well restrained, drinkability is good.
O: Overall, a really good American Barleywine.
