Poured into a snifter glass

A: Pitch black body with inch of toasty tan head sitting on top. The head dissipates leaving a ring around the outside of the glass and some whispy trails of bubbly carbonation through the center.

S: Lots of dark chocolate in the scent, a touch of dark fruit, and some fading hop presence*.

T: Very chocolaty flavor with a finishing note of raisin. The flavor melds together to make this beer taste like dark chocolate syrup. Some fading hops flavor give this beer a peppery note*. Alcohol presence is very noticeable.

M: Mouth is very carbonated, your tongue is assaulted by carbonation and alcohol burn.

D: This was part of Smuttynose "Big Beer" series and it fits the bill. One is enough as there is plenty of flavor to sip on and enjoy.

* I want to note that I held onto my bottle for a few months before drinking it. I did not realize that there was such a strong hop presence in it. When I drank mine I could taste the hop fading and was bummed that I missed out on the flavor of a fresh hop Imperial Stout. My advice is if you didn't drink this fresh wait longer that 6 months for the hops to really fade out.

Poured from a 22 ounce bottle into a tulip. Vintage 2014.

A: Black. Light dark head. Good lace.

S: Incredibly rich. Enormous licorice. Little hot for the ABV.

T/M: Remarkably tasty, but more much moderated than the intense nose suggested. More than a hint of carbonation with edges of bitterness before the fruity main body. Aftertaste is light and clean.

O: good, but not exceptional. Drinkable and tasty; would have again.

2014. 9.4% ABV. Pours out to a clear very dark walnut, almost black, forming a light cocoa powder colored head with good retention and adequate lacing. The nose is of herbal hops, black walnut, soy sauce, distant burnt marshmallow. The mouthfeel is oddly tart with a dense body. The taste is a recap of the aroma. The hops are a little stronger than most imperial stouts, and well, this is a young beer, so that's not coincidental. The taste has a slightly sooty and tarry note to it, which is nice. The hops adds a peculiar tartness and sourness. I sometimes get this sourness wend there is a high percentage of roasted malts. Definitely lots of roasted malt taste, like french press coffee. A touch of molasses towards the finish.

This is a decent RIS, however the sourness, bitterness, green herbal hoppiness just don't sit well. Perhaps with some aging this might mellow out, but I think RIS should be brewed with all these things in mind, in order to be drank now. I'd definitely pass on buying it again. Maybe much better RIS's out there.
