Notes/Commercial Description:
Smuttynose Winter Ale is a full-bodied, amber beer brewed with a special Trappist ale yeast. Dark reddish brown with a nice tan head. Smells super malty with big notes of brown sugar and dates, and now and then a waft of wet grain. Tastes sweet and rich like dark fruit, which for some reason makes it seem more boozy than it is. There's also some smokiness and an eventual bittering hop presence on the back of the tongue. That hop presence is very minimal though. This beer is a malt machine. It seems like some kind of Scottish dopplebock hybrid (Scotchbock?), but it's classified as a dubbel here. Interesting. Whatever it is, it's another good brew from Smutty. Keep em coming.

Chilled 12 oz. bottle into a 12 oz tulip. Best before date 4.29.13

Look- Deep brown, finger and a half of dense off-white head, excellent retention, good lacing.

Smell- Nondescript, nutty, raisin. Mild but pleasant

Taste- Brown bread, light treacle, nutty, graham cracker, ginger. Light stone fruit, red delicious apple. As it warms, it takes on a rounder, toastier flavor that suits it nicely.

Mouthfeel- Medium body, light-medium carbonation. Smooth, juicy feel.

Overall- Does what it's aming to do and I'd certainly buy it again; not something I'd pick up all the time, but as a Winter seasonal it's a solid offering.

Served on tap in a pint glass

Appearance – The beer was served a dark brown color with a little bit of ruby highlights when held to the light. Upon serving there was a one finger cream colored head that faded over a moderate amount of time to leave a lighter level of lacing.

Smell – The aroma was sweet and fruity. Cherries, raisin, and a bit of apple were mixed with a caramel and brown sugar smell. With these aromas was a lighter roasted malt smell.

Taste – The flavor begins with a dark roasted brown bread and dark fruit flavor. While there are flavors of cherry and apple in the taste, they are much lighter then the nose would have let on. While supposedly brewed with no spices light spiced flavors quickly come to the tongue with them initially being of a more allspice and ginger flavor. Toward the end the flavor sweetens a bit with some caramel flavors coming to the tongue. These flavors are accompanied by a bitter cocoa and which when combined with the rest take the taste to its end.

Mouthfeel- The body of the beer was average in terms of creaminess/thickness with a carbonation level that was rather average as well. A slightly thicker body may have been a bit better, but all in all the mouthfeel was fine.

Overall – A nice blend of malt, sweet fruit and sugar tastes. It is a rather balanced winter style ale that is well worth a try.

A- Pours red/brown with a light tan head. Head has fairly good retention and leaves eome nice lacing on the glass.

S- Roasted caramel malts, burnt sugars, touch of a smoke, has a few hints of red apples.

T- Caramel sweetness, big time roasted malt character, and overall pretty solid.

M- Medium in body and right on carbonation.

D- Really easy to drink and I think the name on this one had me fooled. Not at all what I expected.

Unusal offering from the Smuttynose crew for winter. It was the
old fashioned bottle label that drew my eye, I love to try everything
in this style. Nice color to the ale. poured a slight head and then
gone. Not to much to say about the carbonation either. I do like
the spice style ales, some are over done, some to watery. This
one has a peppery note and that traditional belgium, dry yeasty
thing going on, its not bad, I taste fruits, some sour, bananas &
cloves. Its a flat beer after warming(but it doesn't ruin it, but I
think I would rather have this one on tap.
The warming dry candied after taste stays with you for a while
but its not bad, not great. I prefer shipyards old thumper, magic hats jinx
or dogfish head raison d'etre for some spicey, smokey delicious change of pace during the holidays, but I will still give these a
try.

My first go round with this brewery and it wasn't a bad one....this is a decent but not great winter ale.

A - Pours dark brown / red around the edges into a traditional pint glass. A "not so soft" pour yielded a two finger off-white head that hung around for a few minutes...long enough for me to snap a photo with my phone and send it to a friend who was working late...you know, just to rub it in cause that's what friends do right?

S - Expected more of one. LOL! Nothing real pronounced with this one. Very subtle hints of caramel with an earthy scent. Not overpowering or in your face...nice, but lacking complexity.

T - Again not the most complex. Very "safe" for a winter seasonal. I expected more of a robust character...something that would "put hair on your chest"!

M - Smooth with just the right amount of carbonation....kind of thin though. Could stand to be a little heavier.

Overall - Not a bad beer AT ALL! I enjoyed this beer....as I do most (it is beer...duh!) and I'm ready for another. Very easy to drink albeit one dimensional, but I won't hold that against it. I did expect more for a winter brew but was not disappointed. Nice ABV for the price ($9.99 for six here in Maryland). BEER!!

12oz bottle poured into a pint glass.

Pours a clear very dark brown with an almost 2 finger head. Greate retention and lacing.

The smell is of roasted malt along with a bit of chocolate. A tiny bit of hoppiness there as well.

The taste is very roasty and chocolatey up front. This fades to some dark fruits along with a metallic taste. There is some hop flavor on the finish along with a fairly assertive bitterness.

Overall this is an enjoyable beer. Very well suited to the winter months.
