Notes/Commercial Description:
Smuttynose Winter Ale is a full-bodied, amber beer brewed with a special Trappist ale yeast. Stylistically reminiscent of a Belgian Abbey Double, it features fruity aromas and flavor, balanced by soft Crystal hops. Warming, mellow & pleasantly complex, Smuttynose Winter Ale is your perfect cold weather companion.

Smuttynose have the best labels, period. They look like ads from a 1960's Esquire.

Appearance is dark brown/red, with a tan pancake head and nice lacing.

Nose is sour and somewhat stale.

Taste is cocoa, toasted malt, and a candy tartness. Tastes like a winter porter, but without the porter mouthfeel.

Mouthfeel is chalky, like crushed cocoa; fades into a nice creaminess. Medium carbonation.

Overall, the smell is wack but the taste is great. A hardy brew for winter months.

Pours a deep mahogany with a tan head.

Roasted nuts, warm spice, and molasses in the nose - alluring and pleasing.

In the mouth is a Sting of spice up front followed by a nutty fullness (meaty) finnishing with bitter citrus and molasses = very nice. A very warming winter brew.

I can't get over the Bazooka Bubblegum nose. It's distinct, and not welcome. It looks better than free bubblegum, though. Deep brown, purplish. Little head that dissipates pretty much entirely. A welcoming looking beverage during the holidays.

Mouthfeel is excellent. Nice balance of sweetness, nuts, and silkiness. Doesn't stick to the tongue too long. Satisfying.

Taste is reminiscent of a good brown ale but heavier on sweetness, as I'd want in a Winter brew.

A very enjoyable brew during the holidays. A bit more complex and enjoyable as it gets warmer.

Poured from 12oz bottle into Chimay goblet.

A - Poured a nice bubbly deep reddish amber...thin head with loose lacing.

S - Some fruits and spices. Not overly strong odor.

T - Nutmeg jumps out at me along with plum. Pleasant after-taste. Pretty tasty.

M - Even carbonation with a good balance of flavor.

D - This is a pretty drinkable beer. Not my favorite, but I wouldn't turn one down. Certainly worth a try.

I found this to be a very nice winter ale. The woman on the bottle seems to taunt me with her euphoric enjoyment of the winter season. As we are covered in a sheet of ice here in the Northeast I could do without her whimsy at the moment.

However, I won't hold it against her. Things were different in the 1950's. They hadn't discovered cynicism yet.

Dark reddish brown with a nice tan head. Smells super malty with big notes of brown sugar and dates, and now and then a waft of wet grain. Tastes sweet and rich like dark fruit, which for some reason makes it seem more boozy than it is. There's also some smokiness and an eventual bittering hop presence on the back of the tongue. That hop presence is very minimal though. This beer is a malt machine. It seems like some kind of Scottish dopplebock hybrid (Scotchbock?), but it's classified as a dubbel here. Interesting. Whatever it is, it's another good brew from Smutty. Keep em coming.
