2011 release, 22oz bottle poured into a wine glass.

A - Clear amber orangeish sort of color. Decent white head with ok lacing and retention. Its def. a filtered sort of farmhouse which I find odd.

S - Has that barnyard sort of smell. You can pick out the wheat and then move on to the sort of tart fruityness.

T - barnyardy with wheat overtones followed by this tart fruit thing. Almost the same as the nose.

M - This is the only place I had a problem with this beer. Its missing that bottle contioned/unfiltered aspect. It really needs that sort of Belgian farmhouse body. Its too light.

O - Good farmhouse. I liked it just thought it needed a little more body. Good beer from Smuttynose though, second Big Beer series Ive had and they have both been good.

Smuttynose Farmhouse Ale is one of the more disappointing Alerican craft beers I have tasted in a while. The beer is clean, no offensive odors or flavors, well made, but just not to style.

I expect a "farmhouse ale" to follow, more or less, the conventions of Belgian Saisons, which I have noted often are among my favorite beers to drink and brew. The principal flaw with the muttynose is that it remains sweet. I expect a saison to be bone dry, and this one is far from it. Another problem is that the beer has little to no aroma, and almost no flavor character. Saisons are/should be nothing if not full f character. Where is the spice?

This beer is neutral, inoffensive, reasonably well balanced for a generic ale, but far too sweet for a saison, or for an American pale, for that matter. And where is the hop character? There s none. There is sufficient bitterness to barely balance the sweetness...for an English ale, I suppose, but not for a saison! There needs to be a bit of hop presence, not just a little note struggling against the undying, cloying sweetness of malt. Where is the tang? Where is the spice? Where is the brisk tongue-tickling carbonation? Where is e mellow flavir of pilsner or pale malt? Nowhere in this brew!

Sorry. This beer is a huge let down.

pours glowing orange. on the nose, some sweet malts but the sage comes through with lime and pepper a bit and its definitely in the flavor too. a bit spicy . really bubbly and grainy. yeast comes through as well. its all there but it lacks the punch and the complexity for me

Pale gold, but almost as light as straw. Actually, more like straw. Stocky ring of foam, but the head all but expired.

An apple-y nose with a good and firm farmhouse yeast character, not short on sweetness. Almost honeyed with creamy tones. Some good dryness from the sage, which doesn't exactly come out and smack you. Apricot and faint citrus round things out with touches of lemon and pepper.

A sweeter saison with a distict flavor of artificial green apple, like a Jolly Rancher. Some dry sage notes with a restrained pungency that hints at bitter lemon peel and white pepper. Flamboyant in its yeast character with lots more fruitiness than any nuttiness. Some citrus and some stone fruit. Finishes with more apple, pear, and white peach. Not too bad.

Breezy feel with a light dry air and some latent spicy crispiness. Very agreeable. I like more chalky dry chew with the carbonation and residual foam.

This holds up well as a good saison.

Pours a cloudy yellow with a decent white head that lingers. Seems to be a fair amount of bubbles.

Smell starts out with a lot of malt and yeast. There's also citrus, pepper, and a bit of fresh grass and hay, a nice outdoor smell.

Very fruity up front. Once you get past that, there's some pepper spice as well as some grassy notes. Finishes dry with a touch of citrus.

Ok feel, there is a lot of carbonation so quite a bit of tongue tingle.

A decent beer, but not a truly outstanding one. I felt the citrus up front was a bit overwhelming and could be toned down a bit. It is nicely drinkable and goes down easy, but lacking compared to the best of the style I have tried.
