Enjoyed out of a brown 22 oz bomber that isn't marked with a bottling date. However on the bottom-left corner of the label, it reads "Bottle-conditioned in:" and lists three years: 2013, 2014 and 2015. The label has a notch next to 2013, which I presume means this was bottled this year. Poured into a round 8 oz snifter-esque tulip glass.

Appearance - The body reminds me of a hazy countryside sunset, with hues of gold, amber, straw yellow and maize. Shadows waft through, created by a finger of cream colored pillowy head. Retention is superb and leaves pronounced lacing. So far so good.

Smell - Yeasty phenols and a bouquet of fresh fruit with floral overtones and some light, peppery notes. I also get some generic roundness, perhaps from some inclusion of wheat malt?

Taste - Here, the generic roundness becomes more prominent as a biscuit characteristic. From there, the flavor expands to include the spiciness and more distinct notes of nectarine, pear and banana, even some faint bubblegum from the nose. Faint bitterness from some grassy hops that is just enough to make me wish there were more to it, but otherwise, no complaints. A very quaffable saison.

Mouthfeel - Light to medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Finish is dry in spite of the taste having some pleasant sweetness to it.

Overall, a very tasty take on the style. While it doesn't blow me away as a wildly unique version of saison, it's solid and I would jump at the chance to drink it again. I just wouldn't go out of my way to purchase it, since it doesn't distribute to KS/MO.

22 oz bottle into a tulip.

A: Pours a hazy golden color. The head isn't as towering as some saisons, but it is a one finger white shade. Retention isn't great, however.

S: This actually has a nice whiff of funk to it. It takes a while for it to really hit the nose, though - upon opening, it's mostly comprised of white wine with a spicy undertone. There are also some candied sugar notes buried in there. Aside from being a little sweet for my style preferences, it hits upon the major aspects well. Swirling it, in particular, will really allow all that stank-ass cheesiness to hit the nose.

T: It starts off with a wave of spiciness. Earthiness is also prevalent - especially around the middle - but some of the funk notes are a bit subdued next to the aroma. When sufficiently warmed up, swirling the glass will cause some of the funkiness to reappear more vividly - not just on the aroma, but on the flavor as well. The finish is bready and (perhaps) slightly too sugary. Definitely a good saison that's only let down by occasional overt sweetness.

M: An initial fizz helps to lift the (rather dense) body off of the tongue fairly well. After the swallow, though, it leaves a bit too much sweetness on the back palate. Even worse, it also leaves a bit too much astringency on the front of the palate, making it slightly harsh. That's never good. Otherwise, it's easy to drink.

O: This one's nice, but not my ideal saison. With a little less sweetness, this could have been killer. Still solid, still worth a try.

Poured to white, bubbly head with mild retention and little lacing. Appearance was slightly haze with an orangey / straw color. Aroma was slightly sour with some citrus and bread notes. Had a nice, tangy taste of citrus, yeast and spice. Mouthfeel was very carbonated, yet a bit of a creamy effect. Aftertaste was tangy slightly spicy.

2013 version.

A: Carbonation stream is beautiful, but the head simmers down right away. I like my farmhouses murky; this is clear as day.

S: Strong. White wine. A little cotton candy and green apple. Decent, but undistinguished.

T: Follows the nose. Very white winelike. Some green apple. A slight citrus flash and some lingering hoppiness. Can't find the sage.

M: Active, soft. Bitterness on back end.

O: Above average, but out of the elite tier. Followed this with another saison brewed with sage -- Stillwater Cellar Door -- and Smuttynose couldn't compete.
