Pale gold, but almost as light as straw. Actually, more like straw. Stocky ring of foam, but the head all but expired.
An apple-y nose with a good and firm farmhouse yeast character, not short on sweetness. Almost honeyed with creamy tones. Some good dryness from the sage, which doesn't exactly come out and smack you. Apricot and faint citrus round things out with touches of lemon and pepper.
A sweeter saison with a distict flavor of artificial green apple, like a Jolly Rancher. Some dry sage notes with a restrained pungency that hints at bitter lemon peel and white pepper. Flamboyant in its yeast character with lots more fruitiness than any nuttiness. Some citrus and some stone fruit. Finishes with more apple, pear, and white peach. Not too bad.
Breezy feel with a light dry air and some latent spicy crispiness. Very agreeable. I like more chalky dry chew with the carbonation and residual foam.
This holds up well as a good saison.

Pours a cloudy yellow with a decent white head that lingers. Seems to be a fair amount of bubbles.
Smell starts out with a lot of malt and yeast. There's also citrus, pepper, and a bit of fresh grass and hay, a nice outdoor smell.
Very fruity up front. Once you get past that, there's some pepper spice as well as some grassy notes. Finishes dry with a touch of citrus.
Ok feel, there is a lot of carbonation so quite a bit of tongue tingle.
A decent beer, but not a truly outstanding one. I felt the citrus up front was a bit overwhelming and could be toned down a bit. It is nicely drinkable and goes down easy, but lacking compared to the best of the style I have tried.

Smuttynose Farmhouse Ale has a body that is slightly hazy orange/gold color and produced a nice 2-finger bubbly white head that held well. The nose is of fruit and spicy esters. The flavor matches the nose with the taste of pears, apples, bananas, and is spicy and a little peppery from cloves/black pepper. The mouth feel is medium with just the correct amount of carbonation.
This is a very drinkable and enjoyable Farmhouse Ale. I am becoming a big fan of the Farmhouse Ale style, and Smuttynose Big Beer Series too.
